    Smokers’ responses to being addressed when smoking in an outdoor voluntary smoke-free zone:An observational study

    INTRODUCTION: Addressing smokers who smoke in a voluntary smoke-free area is vital to its successful implementation. Many people perceive barriers in addressing smokers due to fear of negative responses. Insights in actual responses are currently lacking. METHODS: This is an observational field study at the voluntary smoke-free zone surrounding the Erasmus MC and two schools in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In the first month after implementing the zone, Erasmus MC representatives performed rounds to address smokers who were smoking inside the zone. Four people observed addressors for two weeks then they also addressed the smokers. Smokers were classified as employees, patients, students, or other. We noted whether smokers were addressed directly or indirectly, and their verbal and behavioral responses to being addressed. Differences between the responses of the groups were assessed using chi-squared tests. RESULTS: In all, 331 smokers were observed of whom 73% were addressed directly. Most verbal reactions were positive (46%) or neutral (18%). Employees were more likely to respond guiltily, whereas patients more often responded angrily than the others. After being addressed, the majority of smokers either extinguished their cigarette (41%) or left to continue smoking outside the smoke-free zone (34%). CONCLUSIONS: Most smokers showed a positive or neutral response when being addressed about smoking inside the smoke-free zone and the majority adapted their behavior to comply with the policy. These findings may help decrease barriers for those in doubt about addressing smokers that fail to comply with a smoke-free policy

    Mixture of latent trait analyzers for model-based clustering of categorical data

    Model-based clustering methods for continuous data are well established and commonly used in a wide range of applications. However, model-based clustering methods for categorical data are less standard. Latent class analysis is a commonly used method for model-based clustering of binary data and/or categorical data, but due to an assumed local independence structure there may not be a correspondence between the estimated latent classes and groups in the population of interest. The mixture of latent trait analyzers model extends latent class analysis by assuming a model for the categorical response variables that depends on both a categorical latent class and a continuous latent trait variable; the discrete latent class accommodates group structure and the continuous latent trait accommodates dependence within these groups. Fitting the mixture of latent trait analyzers model is potentially difficult because the likelihood function involves an integral that cannot be evaluated analytically. We develop a variational approach for fitting the mixture of latent trait models and this provides an efficient model fitting strategy. The mixture of latent trait analyzers model is demonstrated on the analysis of data from the National Long Term Care Survey (NLTCS) and voting in the U.S. Congress. The model is shown to yield intuitive clustering results and it gives a much better fit than either latent class analysis or latent trait analysis alone

    Two experiments were designed to evaluate the effects of altering body condition score (BCS) and the profile of a fatty acid (FA) supplement on the metabolism of Bos indicus Nellore females. In experiment 1, 16 and 24 B. indicus heifers and nonlactating cows, respectively, were assigned to (1) maintenance diet (MNT-MNT; n = 10), (2) maintenance diet and BCS loss (MNT-LSS; n = 10), (3) maintenance diet supplemented with calcium salts of soybean oil for 30 d and BCS loss for 40 d (MNT+CFA-LSS; n = 10), and (4) maintenance diet for 30 d and BCS loss for 40 d with a diet containing calcium salts of soybean oil (MNT-LSS+CFA; n = 10). Following the BCS loss period, MNT-LSS, MNT+CFA-LSS, and MNT-LSS+CFA were fed a diet to promote the gain of BCS. In experiment 2, 40 Bos indicus nulliparous heifers were assigned to (1) maintenance diet (MNT-MNT; n = 10), (2) BCS loss followed by a BCS gain (LSS-REM; n = 10), (3) BCS loss followed by a BCS gain diet with CFA of palm oil (LSS-REM+PLM; n = 10), and (4) BCS loss followed by a BCS gain diet with CFA of soybean oil (LSS-REM+SOY; n = 10). Blood samples were obtained for serum haptoglobin and fecal samples for pH (experiment 2 only). In experiment 1, a treatment × day interaction was observed for BCS during the 60-d BCS loss and gain period. Animals assigned to MNT-MNT had a greater BCS than the other treatment groups on d 40 and 60 of the experiment, but no other differences were observed. Moreover, a treatment × day interaction was observed for serum haptoglobin, as on d 60, MNT-LSS had a greater mean serum haptoglobin concentration. In experiment 2, a treatment × day interaction was also observed for BCS. From d −4 to 0, LSS-REM and LSS-REM+SOY had a reduced BCS versus MNT-MNT, but also lower for LSS-REM versus MNT-MNT on d 1, and LSS-REM+PLM versus MNT-MNT on d −1 and 0. For serum haptoglobin, no treatment or treatment × day interaction was observed. A treatment × day interaction was observed for fecal pH. From d −10 to 0, MNT often had a lower fecal pH, but during realimentation, LSS-REM heifers had a reduced fecal pH on d 1, 4, and 10. In summary, we failed to demonstrate an increase in serum haptoglobin due to a BCS loss. Still, supplementation with calcium salts of FA alleviated the increase in haptoglobin and maintained fecal pH at more stable values during realimentation, regardless of the FA profile of the supplement

    Evaluation of Chemical Constituents and Antioxidant Activity of Coconut Water (Cocus nucifera L.) and Caffeic Acid in Cell Culture

    Coconut water contains several uncharacterized substances and is widely used in the human consumption. In this paper we detected and quantified ascorbic acid and caffeic acid and total phenolics in several varieties of coconut using HPLS/MS/MS (25.8 ± 0.6 ”g/mL and 1.078 ± 0.013 ”g/mL and 99.7 ”g/mL, respectively, in the green dwarf coconut water, or 10 mg and 539 ”g and 39.8 mg for units of coconut consumed, 500 ± 50 mL). The antioxidant potential of four coconut varieties (green dwarf, yellow dwarf, red dwarf and yellow Malaysian) was compared with two industrialized coconut waters and the lyophilized water of the green dwarf variety. All varieties were effective in scavenging the DPPH radical (IC50=73 ”L) and oxide nitric (0.1 mL with an IP of 29.9%) as well as in inhibiting the in vitro production of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (1 mL with an IP of 34.4%), highlighting the antioxidant properties of the green dwarf which it is the most common used.
