    Efficacy of the elementary, middle, and high school studentsā€™ persuasive speech: Evidence from South Korea

    This paper aims to analyze the efficacy of elementary, middle, and high school students with respect to using persuasive speech and establish a direction for the development of relevant education. It examines the case of South Korea, where the government has presented the importance of persuasive speech education and implemented considerable measures since 2015. It utilizes the survey results on the perception around persuasive speech, based on the achievement standard set within the Korean language curriculum for elementary, middle, and high school students. The research offers several recommendations. First, it is necessary to specify educational content so that it applies differentially, according to the conditions of students. Second, educational content that addresses studentsā€™ attitudes, self-awareness, and participation in community issues must be reinforced. Third, educational content related to persuasion preparation, content organization methods, strategies, and meta-cognitive aspects must be presented sequentially in terms of beginning, development, and application, as suited to each level of education. Fourth, it is necessary to review the teaching-learning methods to increase the effectiveness of persuasive speech education. Fifth, it is necessary to especially consider the disadvantages of middle school students, who have huge gaps in efficacy with respect to their knowledge of persuasive speech

    PERFORMANCE IMPACT OF DISPATCHING AND ROUTING IN AN AUTOMATED GUIDED VEHICLE SYSTEM

    Dispatching and routing are fundamental operational decisions in automated material-handling systems. Numerous studies have been conducted on these two operational decisions, with more focus being recently made on intelligent routing decisions. However, comparative studies between the effects of dispatching and routing methods have not been reported so far. In this study, we have investigated three dispatching and three routing algorithms and measured their impacts using a simulation model for an automated guided vehicle (AGV) system designed for a real-world production line, in which a grid-type material flow layout is used, and the AGVs need to stop before changing their direction of movement. Two routing algorithms are developed in this study. Simulation experiments revealed that both dispatching and routing algorithms affect the performance of the AGV system, although dispatching methods showed a more significant impact. Good dispatching and routing algorithms are mandatory to improve the overall performance of AGV systems

    Development of a Chemically Defined Medium to Assay the Metabolism of Lactic Acid Bacteria

    The purpose of this study was to develop a chemically-defined medium that is capable of supporting and detecting the metabolism of nutritionally-fastidious Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB). The resultant Kim Menon Sturino (KMS) medium is comprised of only twelve chemically-defined ingredients. In order to increase the bioavailability of hydrophobic chemical additives, such as the isoflavone genistein (4',5,7-trihydroxyisoflavone), tween 80 was incorporated into the final medium at high levels (10% v/v). Furthermore, a commercial redox indicator was supplemented to the final formulation in order to facilitate the indirect assessment of cellular metabolism through the direct measurement of medium coloration. As proof of concept, the KMS medium was used to identify LAB with specific enzyme activities of interest, specifically Ī²-glycoside hydrolase activity. In this model system, LAB were screened for their capacity to catabolize genistin (Gin^(+)), a glucoside (glycone) of genistein (genistein 7-O-Ī²-D-glucoside) or its complementary aglycone, genistein (Gen^(+)). Of the fifteen strains screened, none were Gen^(+) while L. pentosus was reproducibly Gin^(+). As a result of this work, we conclude that L. pentosus expresses one or more Ī²-glycoside hydrolases capable of hydrolyzing the glucose associated with genistin and fermenting it

    An Efficient State Space Generation for the Analysis of Real-Time Systems

    State explosion is a well-known problem that impedes analysis and testing based on state-space exploration. This problem is particularly serious in real-time systems because unbounded time values cause the state space to be infinite even for simple systems. In this paper, we present an algorithm that produces a compact representation of the reachable state space of a real-time system. The algorithm yields a small state space, but still retains enough information for analysis. To avoid the state explosion which can be caused by simply adding time values to states, our algorithm uses history equivalence and transition bisimulation to collapse states into equivalent classes. Through history equivalence, states are merged into an equivalence class with the same untimed executions up to the states. Using transition bisimulation, the states that have the same future behaviors are further collapsed. The resultant state space is finite and can be used to analyze real-time properties. To show the effectiveness of our algorithm, we have implemented the algorithm and have analyzed several example applications

    Risk Assessment and Mitigation Model for Overseas Steel-Plant Project Investment with Analytic Hierarchy ProcessFuzzy Inference System

    This paper presents an analytic hierarchy process (AHP)-fuzzy inference system (FIS) model to aid decision-makers in the risk assessment and mitigation of overseas steel-plant projects. Through a thorough literature review, the authors identified 57 risks associated with international steel construction, operation, and transference of new technologies. Pairwise comparisons of all 57 risks by 14 subject-matter experts resulted in a relative weighting. Furthermore, to mitigate human subjectivity, vagueness, and uncertainty, a fuzzy analysis based on the findings of two case studies was performed. From these combined analyses, weighted individual risk soring resulted in the following top five most impactful international steel project risks: procurement of raw materials; design errors and omissions; conditions of raw materials; technology spill prevention plan; investment cost and poor plant availability and performance. Risk mitigation measures are also presented, and risk scores are re-assessed through the AHP-FIS analysis model depicting an overall project risk score reduction. The model presented is a useful tool for industry performing steel project risk assessments.     Formal Modeling and Verification of Motor Drive Software for Networked Motion Control Systems

    Abstract: This paper presents a model-based approach to the design and verification of motor drive software for networked motion control systems. We develop a formal model for an Ethernetbased motion system, where, using timed automata, we describe the concurrent and synchronized behaviors of the components, i.e., motion controller, motor drives, and communication links. The drive, in particular, is modeled in enough detail to accurately reflect the software implementation used in a real drive. We use the design of multitasked drive software with fixed-priority preemptive scheduling. With UPPAAL model checking, we verify the precision and accuracy of the rendered motion in terms of the requirements on the actuation delay at each drive and the actuation deviation between different drives, respectively. The analysis results demonstrate the benefits of our model-based approach in the safety verification and design space exploration of motor drive software. We show that it is possible to verify deadlock freeness and real-time schedulability in an early design phase. And, for varying number of drives and size of messages, we can successfully determine the combination of task periods that leads to the best precision and accuracy

The SPR tool makes it possible to analyze security issues on security systems based on the access control model.     Hemophagocytic Syndrome in a Patient with Acute Tubulointerstitial Nephritis Secondary to Hepatitis A Virus Infection

    Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is generally a self-limited disease, but the infection in adults can be serious, to be often complicated by acute kidney injury (AKI) and rarely by virus-associated hemophagocytic syndrome (VAHS). Our patient, a 48-yr-old man, was diagnosed with HAV infection complicated by dialysis-dependent AKI. His kidney biopsy showed acute tubulointerstitial nephritis with massive infiltration of activated macrophages and T cells, and he progressively demonstrated features of VAHS. With hemodialysis and steroid treatment, he was successfully recovered
