    The CHIME graduate programme in health informatics

    In 1999 University College London inaugurated a programme of graduate part-time Health Informatics courses to support the UK National Health Service?s Information for Health strategy. The programme has attracted students from across the UK and abroad, with a diverse range of backgrounds and skills and has proved a challenging and rewarding experience for students and tutors alike. The modular programme aims to provide a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of Health Informatics and addresses important application areas. The guiding principle is that Health Informatics graduates need to understand computers and programming but that, since the majority are not going to become programmers, programming methods should not dominate the curriculum.In the taught phase of the programme students attend college for 3 days a month and complete an assignment each month, based on home study. Students may graduate with a certificate or diploma, or go on to tackle a dissertation leading to an MSc. Research projects have included a patient record system based on speech input, a mathematical model for illustrating to patients the risks associated with smoking, an analysis of Trust staff's preparedness for Information for Health and a patient information leaflet giving advice about drug related information on the Web. As we move towards our fifth intake of students, we are in the process of evaluating our programme and carrying out a follow up study of our graduates? subsequent career pathways

    Security and confidentiality approach for the Clinical E-Science Framework (CLEF)

    CLEF is an MRC sponsored project in the E-Science programme that aims to establish policies and infrastructure for the next generation of integrated clinical and bioscience research. One of the major goals of the project is to provide a pseudonymised repository of histories of cancer patients that can be accessed by researchers. Robust mechanisms and policies are needed to ensure that patient privacy and confidentiality are preserved while delivering a repository of such medically rich information for the purposes of scientific research. This paper summarises the overall approach adopted by CLEF to meet data protection requirements, including the data flows and pseudonymisation mechanisms that are currently being developed. Intended constraints and monitoring policies that will apply to research interrogation of the repository are also outlined. Once evaluated, it is hoped that the CLEF approach can serve as a model for other distributed electronic health record repositories to be accessed for research

    Low-frequency QPO from the 11 Hz accreting pulsar in Terzan 5: not frame dragging

    We report on 6 RXTE observations taken during the 2010 outburst of the 11 Hz accreting pulsar IGR J17480-2446 located in the globular cluster Terzan 5. During these observations we find power spectra which resemble those seen in Z-type high-luminosity neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries, with a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the 35-50 Hz range simultaneous with a kHz QPO and broad band noise. Using well known frequency-frequency correlations, we identify the 35-50 Hz QPOs as the horizontal branch oscillations (HBO), which were previously suggested to be due to Lense-Thirring precession. As IGR J17480-2446 spins more than an order of magnitude more slowly than any of the other neutron stars where these QPOs were found, this QPO can not be explained by frame dragging. By extension, this casts doubt on the Lense-Thirring precession model for other low-frequency QPOs in neutron-star and perhaps even black-hole systems.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

    CLEF (Co-operative Clinical e-Science Framework) is an MRC sponsored project in the e-Science programme that aims to establish methodologies and a technical infrastructure forthe next generation of integrated clinical and bioscience research. It is developing methodsfor managing and using pseudonymised repositories of the long-term patient histories whichcan be linked to genetic, genomic information or used to support patient care. CLEF concentrateson removing key barriers to managing such repositories ? ethical issues, informationcapture, integration of disparate sources into coherent ?chronicles? of events, userorientedmechanisms for querying and displaying the information, and compiling the requiredknowledge resources. This paper describes the overall information flow and technicalapproach designed to meet these aims within a Grid framework

    Determining ‘Wether’ Social Behaviour or Pasture Quality Drives Sheep Grazing Patterns using Random Forest Modelling

    Monitoring livestock provides valuable insights into the spatial distribution, foraging patterns, and animal behaviour, which may lead to the improved management of livestock. This objective of study was to understand what variables were significant in determining where sheep spent the most time in paddocks of native (dominated by Poa spp., Stipa spp., and Hordeum leporinum), and improved (Phalaris aquatica, Festuca spp., and Trifolium subterraneum) pastures (~24 ha-1 in size). Castrated male sheep, wethers, were tracked using GPS collars on a property located in the Monaro region of Southern New South Wales, Australia. Trials were performed over four six-day periods in April, July, and November of 2014, and March in 2015. Thirty collars were randomly placed on 15 sheep in each pasture types. The GPS collars continuously recorded movements over the duration of each trial and were programmed to take five positional fixes over a minute. Data was analysed all together to understand various trends that may have occurred across the year, using random forest models (RFMs). Models were created for improved (IP) and native (NP) paddocks, producing R2 values of 0.97 and 0.94. Regardless of the pasture type, near distance to water (NW) was important in predicting where animals were located within paddocks, despite its statistical insignificance. Sheep spent more time further away from water troughs (at least ~600 m). Additionally, NDVI was another important variable in predicting sheep location for IP and NP (p \u3c 0.01). The data suggests that RFMs are able to predict where animals will likely spend time on a paddock at a large scale, with water troughs and pasture quality being two key drivers

    Wave interaction with a sea dike using a VOF finite-volume method

    This paper represents a solver for numerical simulation of breaking waves, developed at Ghent University using an implicit cellstaggered VOF finite volume approach. The mathematical model is based on unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes (NS) equations with a free surface. A flux-difference splitting approach with the MUSCL type (or the ENO scheme) and a central-difference scheme are applied for evaluation of the inviscid and viscous fluxes, respectively. A projection method is involved for coupling of the pressure and the velocity. A free surface is tracked with the VOF method, in which the approximate dynamic boundary conditions are implemented. In addition, second- and fourth-order artificial damping terms are introduced to the velocity normal to the cell face. A Sommerfeld radiation condition is implemented at the open boundary to dissipate the energy of outgoing waves. Moreover, cut-cell techniques are utilized for treatment of an arbitrary geometry. The solver can capture many physical phenomena during the interaction of waves with a dike, when a wave run-up and overtopping over an impermeable sea dike are performed in a numerical wave tank

    MBA Professional ReportPrior to awarding a contract, government contracting officers must be able to determine the financial health of prospective contractors. In fact, according to the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) 9.104- 1(a), the very first general requirement to being considered a responsible prospective contractor is to show adequate financial resources to perform the contract or the ability to obtain financing. The purpose of this research is to identify a financial assessment framework that could assist DOD contracting officers with determining the financial health of potential DOD contractors. This research study may help DOD contracting officers determine the financial health of potential contractors prior to awarding a contract. The findings of this study provide a recommended framework that a contracting officer could follow in order to assess the financial health of a prospective contractor. The framework includes a ratio analysis using selected ratios compiled by this study, as well as a comparative analysis using industry average driven data. The framework also incorporates horizontal and vertical analyses, as well as bankruptcy and fraud analyses.
