    Properties of the Milky Way stellar disks in the direction of the Draco dSph galaxy

    We present the first results of a study where we determine the metallicity distribution function in the Galactic disks as a function of height above the Galactic plane. Observations in the Stromgren photometric system enables us to identify the dwarf stars and derive metallicities for them. The resulting metallicity distribution functions at 0.5 and 2.0 kpc above the Galactic plane are significantly broader and more metal-rich than is anticipated from standard models such as the Besancon model. Our results can be explained by invoking a smaller scale height and larger local normalisation for the thick disk than is commonly used in the models. These results are compatible with recent determinations of the thick disk scale height based e.g. on SDSS data. The age of the stellar populations as a function of height above the Galactic plane is also investigated by studying the turn-off colour and metallicity. We tentatively find that at 2.0 kpc above the Galactic plane there exist an intermediate age population.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, IAU symposium 25

    Multi-keyword multi-click advertisement option contracts for sponsored search

    In sponsored search, advertisement (abbreviated ad) slots are usually sold by a search engine to an advertiser through an auction mechanism in which advertisers bid on keywords. In theory, auction mechanisms have many desirable economic properties. However, keyword auctions have a number of limitations including: the uncertainty in payment prices for advertisers; the volatility in the search engine's revenue; and the weak loyalty between advertiser and search engine. In this paper we propose a special ad option that alleviates these problems. In our proposal, an advertiser can purchase an option from a search engine in advance by paying an upfront fee, known as the option price. He then has the right, but no obligation, to purchase among the pre-specified set of keywords at the fixed cost-per-clicks (CPCs) for a specified number of clicks in a specified period of time. The proposed option is closely related to a special exotic option in finance that contains multiple underlying assets (multi-keyword) and is also multi-exercisable (multi-click). This novel structure has many benefits: advertisers can have reduced uncertainty in advertising; the search engine can improve the advertisers' loyalty as well as obtain a stable and increased expected revenue over time. Since the proposed ad option can be implemented in conjunction with the existing keyword auctions, the option price and corresponding fixed CPCs must be set such that there is no arbitrage between the two markets. Option pricing methods are discussed and our experimental results validate the development.     De Sitter Space and Spatial Topology

    Morrow-Jones and Witt have shown that generic spatial topologies admit initial data that evolve to locally de Sitter spacetimes under Einstein's equations. We simplify their arguments, make them a little more general, and solve for the global time evolution of the wormhole initial data considered by them.     The Vaidya solution describes the gravitational collapse of a finite shell of incoherent radiation falling into flat spacetime and giving rise to a Schwarzschild black hole. There has been a question whether closed trapped surfaces can extend into the flat region (whereas closed outer trapped surfaces certainly can).     Background Management of the critically bleeding patient can be encountered in many medical and surgical settings. Common for these patients is a high risk of dying from exsanguination secondary to developing coagulopathy. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to systematically review and assess randomised controlled trials (RCTs) performed on patients in acute need for blood transfusions due to bleeding to evaluate the effect of viscoelastic haemostatic assay (VHA) guidance on bleeding, transfusion requirements and mortality. Methods PubMed and EMBASE were searched for RCTs that 1) randomised patients into receiving transfusions based on either a VHA-guided (thromboelastography [TEG] or rotational thromboelastometry [ROTEM]) algorithm (intervention group) or at the clinician’s discretion and/or based on conventional coagulation tests (control group) and 2) adequately reported on the outcomes bleeding and/or transfusions and/or mortality. Data on bleeding, transfusions and mortality were extracted from each trial and included in a meta-analysis. Results Fifteen RCTs (n = 1238 patients) were included. Nine trials referred to cardiothoracic patients, one to liver transplantation, one to surgical excision of burn wounds and one to trauma. One trial was conducted with cirrhotic patients, one with patients undergoing scoliosis surgery while one trial randomised treatment in post-partum females presenting with bleeding. The amount of transfused red blood cells (RBCs), fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and bleeding volume was found to be significantly reduced in the VHA-guided groups, whereas no significant difference was found for platelet transfusion requirements or mortality.Peer Reviewe

    Making Anti-de Sitter Black Holes

    It is known from the work of Banados et al. that a space-time with event horizons (much like the Schwarzschild black hole) can be obtained from 2+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter space through a suitable identification of points. We point out that this can be done in 3+1 dimensions as well. In this way we obtain black holes with event horizons that are tori or Riemann surfaces of genus higher than one. The idea is to view CP^n as a set of flat tori parametrized by the positive octant of a round sphere.     Adaptive inverse analysis (AIA) applied and verified on various fiber reinforced concrete composites

    During the past decades several inverse approaches have been developed to identify the stress-crack opening (σ−w) by means of indirect test methods, such as the notched three point bending-, wedge splitting-, and round panel testing. The aim is to establish reliable constitutive models for the tensile behavior of fiber reinforced concrete materials, suitable for structural design. Within this context, the adaptive inverse analysis (AIA) was recently developed to facilitate a fully general and automatized inverse analysis scheme, which is applicable in conjunction with analytical or finite element simulation of the experimental response. This paper presents a new formulation of the adaptive refinement criterion of the AIA method. The paper demonstrates that the refinement criterion of the nonlinear least square curve fitting process, is significantly improved by coupling the model error to the crack mouth opening and the crack opening displacement relationship. This enables an adaptive refinement of the σ−w model in the line segment with maximum model error, which entails significant improvement of the numerical efficiency of the AIA method without any loss of robustness. The improved method is applied on various fiber reinforced concrete composites and the results are benchmarked with the inverse analysis method suggested by the Japanese Concrete Institute (Method of test for fracture energy of concrete by use of notched beam, Japanese Concrete Institute Standard, Tokyo, 2003) and recently adopted in ISO 19044 (Test methods for fibre-reinforced cementitious composites—load-displacement curve using notched specimen, 2015). The benchmarking demonstrates that the AIA method, in contradiction to the JCI/ISO method, facilitates direct determination of the tensile strength and operational multi-linear σ−w models
