    IMPORTANCE OF FINANCIAL TECHNOLOGY IMPLICATIONS FOR PROFESSIONALS IN INDONESIA

    The focus of the study was to test the financial technology for professionals and its influence on the financial system. The study notes that those professionals who fails to align with the ever-changing technology will not be able to survive their field. Therefore, it is recommended that professionals must be proactive to use financial technology. Furthermore, the regulators in particular field must be technologically inclined with regard to financial technology. Based on regulators pressure and personal motivation, the professionals and firms must take efforts to develop workers for financial technology such as data protections of customers. The government can also develop policies to boost financial technology in Indonesia

    THE USE OF ICT IN RELATION TO THE PARAGRAPH WRITING ACHIEVEMENT OF ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM STUDENTS AT SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY

    Technology has spread throughout the world and has been used by the world community in the 21st century era. The use of technology is integrated into almost all aspects of human life, including education in paragraph writing. The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there was any significant correlation between the use of ICT and paragraph writing achievement. The sample of this study was 75 fourth-semester students of English Education Study Program at Sriwijaya University. The sampling technique used was total sampling method. In collecting the data, two kinds of instruments, the use of ICT tools questionnaire and paragraph writing achievement were used. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to analyse the data. The correlation coefficient (Pearson Correlation) was 0.591, it means the degree of the correlation was fair correlation and the result of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient showed that there was a significant correlation between the use of ICT and paragraph writing achievement because p-value (0.000) was lower than (0.05)

    NEEDS ANALYSIS-BASED ENGLISH SYLLABUS FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS OF BINA DARMA UNIVERSITY

    This study aims to design an appropriate English syllabus for computer science students of Bina Darma University. This study analyzes the needs of students using Target Situation Analysis (TSA), Deficiency Analysis (DA), and Strategy Analysis (SA). Descriptive analysis approach method is used in this study. There were 61 students in the second semester of Bina Darma Palembang majoring in computers, 1 lecturer and director of the institute involved in this study. Data were collected obtained from questionnaires, interview, observation, and documents review. The results show that the target needs are speaking and writing skill. The two language basic skills get a large portion in the preparation of the English syllabus. In addition, students need a learning process to focus more on practice than theory. The learning process also needs to be integrated with technology to make classroom activities more interesting. Finally, this study proposes a syllabus that is recommended to use in the institution.

    THE PRACTICE AND CHALLENGES OF IMPLEMENTING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN EFL TEACHERS QUESTIONING BEHAVIOR

    The development of critical thinking is closely related to the questions asked by teachers as the teachers higher-order questions are cognitively demanding to promote students critical thinking. The purposes of this study are to investigate how critical thinking was implemented in EFL teachers questions in the classroom and the challenges faced by EFL teachers in integrating critical thinking questions. In addition, this study also investigated students reasons for non-response to particular questions asked by teachers. Applying mixed-method research design, the data were collected from classroom observation, interview, questionnaire and documentations. The research participants were two English teachers and 229 number of students of year 8. The results showed that the most dominant questions asked by the two English teachers were in Lower-order questions (78,8%), while the Higher-order questions were only (21,2%) questions. Second, the challenges faced by teachers were students intelligence has yet to reach the level of higher-order thinking, unconducive-classroom environment, teachers creativity itself, parental involvement and students lack of vocabulary. Third, dealing with the reason for students non-response in particular questions asked by teachers, there were some reasons, such as students are afraid of making mistakes, they could not put ideas into words, and lack of vocabularies. In conclusion, the teachers faced various challenges in implementing critical thinking questions in the classroom

    Pendidikan karakter berkaitan erat dengan kecerdasan intelektual, emosional, dan spiritual. Masalah yang diangkat dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimana instrumen uji kecerdasan dalam ranah pikiran, perasaan, dan karsa dan bagaimana subjek penelitian mengapresiasi karya sastra (cerpen) yang berlatar bidang pendidikan. Subjek penelitian terdiri atas 51 mahasiswa dari berbagai program studi di FKIP Universitas Sriwijaya. Paradigma penelitian utama adalah R & D, namun metode deskriptif digunakan untuk mengeksplorasi apresiasi sastra dan persepsi mahasiswa tentang keterkaitan antara instrumen uji kecerdasan intelektual, emosional, dan spiritual dengan pembelajaran sastra di universitas. Hasil penelitian ini berupa: (1) instrumen uji kecerdasan berkontribusi sebesar 69,2% yang diberikan sebelum dan sesudah membaca karya sastra dan (2) dari segi intelektual, emosional, dan spiritual, ditemukan sebesar 95,2% mahasiswa prodi pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia, Sejarah, dan Matematika dan 95% mahasiswa prodi pendidikan Bahasa Inggris menanggapi secara positif isi dari pernyataan-pernyataan apresiasi sastra sebagai bagian dari instrumen pengembang kecerdasan secara keseluruhan. Dengan demikian, instrument uji kecerdasan IQ, EQ, dan SQ secara signifikan berkontribusi pada penguatan pendidikan karakter

    Model Seni Pertunjukan Sastra Lokal dalam Mengembangkan Kemampuan Literasi Pemelajar BIPA

    Indonesia memiliki beragam karya sastra lokal yang dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai materi ajar BIPA seperti cerita rakyat dan legenda. Keragaman cerita rakyat yang dimiliki setiap daerah dapat menambah wawasan budaya pembelajar BIPA. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian Inderawati (2009), kemampuan berbahasa Inggris mahasiswa dapat ditingkatkan dengan mengaplikasikan Model Seni Pertunjukan Sastra Lokal. Bertolak dari hasil penelitian tersebut, makalah ini mencoba menggagas sastra lokal dalam pembelajaran BIPA melalui model seni pertunjukan untuk mengintegrasikan kemampuan berbahasa penutur asing tingkat lanjut. Model seni pertunjukan sastra lokal tersebut mengolaborasikan tujuh strategi respons pembaca (merinci, menjelaskan, menafsirkan, memahami, menyertakan, menghubungkan, dan menilai) dan dua dimensi respons simbol visual (tablo dan sosiogram). Kolaborasi kedua respons menghasilkan pembelajaran bahasa yang kreatif dan menyenangkan yang tersusun dalam sintaks berikut: 1) pembelajar membaca cerita rakyat dan menulis respons mereka, 2) pembelajar melakukan monolog tentang isi cerita rakyat, 3) pembelajar mendiskusikan dalam kelompok cerita rakyat yang telah dibaca, 4) pembelajar memeragakan tablo dengan cara memilih satu paragraf yang menarik dan kelompok lain menebak isi dari peragaan tersebut, 5) pembelajar mendiskusikan dan memperdebatkan isi tablo, dan 6) pembelajar memeragakan tablo dalam bentuk sosiogram sebagai akhir dari pertunjukan

    NEEDS ANALYSIS OF PALEMBANG-TOURIST-DESTINATION RECOUNT TEXT READING MATERIALS IN THE 21ST CENTURY LEARNING

    The specification of the materials taught is one of the characteristics of teaching English at vocational high school. The materials should be appropriately designed or developed for the students to enhance their comprehension and to facilitate subject matter. The aim of this research is to look into students' needs for developing English reading materials based on Palembang culture, as determined by the feedback of students and teacher. Through a questionnaire and interview, the data were obtained. The data was quantitatively and qualitatively analysed. The results of the study revealed that 1) students are still experiencing some difficulty in reading comprehension, 2) a recount text is necessary; 3) English reading materials need to be integrated with students' local culture; and 4) no English reading material has been made available to incorporate the students' local culture, particularly in the field of tourism destination of Palembang. Due to needs, reading materials must be developed through the integration of local culture that matches the level of reading and supports the content of the topics

    WRITING ATTITUDE AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AS DETERMINANTS IN BOOSTING EFL LEARNERS’ WRITING PERFORMANCE

    This study aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant correlation between students’ writing attitude, emotional intelligence and their writing performance, and the predictor variables and the criterion variable. It involved 121 students of the English Education Study Programs of Tridinanti, PGRI, and Muhammadiyah Universities in Palembang. The data were collected through the use of Writing Attitude Questionnaire, Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire and a writing test. The data were analyzed by using the Pearson Product Moment correlation coeficient and partial correlation analysis. The results showed that there were significant correlations in a row of the writing attitude and writing performance with r-obtained was 0.342. There results showed there were significant correlations of emotional intelligence and writing performance because the value of.028 with the correlation coefficient of .140. and the results of the partial correlation showed that writing attitude, emotional intelligence, and writing performance had a significant correlation with r value of .280 and p-value of .001
