    L'horticulture affecte les communautés de macroinvertébrés dans les cours d'eau drainants (Buenos Aires, Argentine)

    The agrochemicals used on crops can reach watercourses, affecting water quality and biologic communities. The aim of this research was to study the effects of horticulture on the water quality and invertebrate assemblages of adjacent streams in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Four streams draining horticultural basins were compared with another four considered less disturbed: two of the latter located in a Biosphere Reserve and the other two in extensive livestock-raising basins. Pesticides were detected in the horticulture-related streams, while nutrient concentrations were significantly higher than in the less-disturbed streams. The macroinvertebrate assemblages differed: the less-disturbed streams exhibited a significantly higher taxa richness and density. Hyalella sp. and Simocephalus vetulus were dominant, whereas Entomobryoidea, Dugessidae, and Glossiphoniidae were dominant in the horticulture-associated streams. Ephemeroptera (Caenis and Baetidae) were well represented in the less-disturbed streams and rare or absent in the horticulture-adjacent streams. Multivariate analysis indicated that the horticulture-impacted sites contained high nutrient concentrations and tolerant taxa, while the less-disturbed sites corresponded to lower nutrient concentrations and sensitive taxa. We propose Hyalella sp. and S. vetulus as water-quality indicators in pampean streams and conclude that intensive agrochemical applications in horticulture increase nutrient and pesticide loads affecting the macroinvertebrate assemblages of adjacent streams.Les produits agrochimiques utilisĂ©s sur les cultures peuvent atteindre les cours d'eau, affectant la qualitĂ© de l'eau et les communautĂ©s biologiques. Le but de cette recherche Ă©tait d'Ă©tudier les effets de l'horticulture sur la qualitĂ© de l'eau et les assemblages d'invertĂ©brĂ©s des cours d'eau adjacents dans la province de Buenos Aires en Argentine. Quatre cours d'eau drainant des bassins horticoles ont Ă©tĂ© comparĂ©s Ă  quatre autres jugĂ©s moins perturbĂ©s : deux d'entre eux situĂ©s dans une rĂ©serve de biosphĂšre et les deux autres dans de vastes bassins d'Ă©levage. Des pesticides ont Ă©tĂ© dĂ©tectĂ©s dans les cours d'eau liĂ©s Ă  l'horticulture, tandis que les concentrations de nutriments Ă©taient considĂ©rablement plus Ă©levĂ©es que dans les cours d'eau moins perturbĂ©s. Les assemblages de macroinvertĂ©brĂ©s diffĂ©raient : les cours d'eau moins perturbĂ©s prĂ©sentaient une richesse et une densitĂ© taxonomiques nettement plus Ă©levĂ©es. Hyalella sp. et Simocephalus vetulus dominaient, tandis que les Entomobryoidea, Dugessidae et Glossiphoniidae dominaient dans les ruisseaux associĂ©s Ă  l'horticulture. Les Ă©phĂ©mĂ©roptĂšres (Caenis et Baetidae) Ă©taient bien reprĂ©sentĂ©s dans les cours d'eau moins perturbĂ©s et rares ou absents dans les cours d'eau voisins de l'horticulture. L'analyse multivariĂ©e indique que les sites touchĂ©s par l'horticulture contenaient des concentrations Ă©levĂ©es d'Ă©lĂ©ments nutritifs et des taxons tolĂ©rants, tandis que les sites moins perturbĂ©s correspondaient Ă  des concentrations infĂ©rieures d'Ă©lĂ©ments nutritifs et Ă  des taxons sensibles. Nous proposons Hyalella sp. et S. vetulus comme indicateurs de la qualitĂ© de l'eau dans les cours d'eau pampĂ©ens et concluons que les applications agrochimiques intensives en horticulture augmentent les charges de nutriments et de pesticides affectant les communautĂ©s de macroinvertĂ©brĂ©s des cours d'eau voisins.Fil: Arias, Marina.     An integrated approach for assessing the migration behavior of chlorpyrifos and carbaryl in the unsaturated soil zone

    Chlorpyrifos (O, O-diethyl O-3,5,6-trichloropyridin-2-yl phosphorothioate) and carbaryl (1-naphthyl methylcarbamate) are often applied concurrently as insecticides in food production. The aim of this study was to research their migration behavior in a real environment. We researched the leaching of both pesticides by setting up field lysimeters on a farm with the typical soil used in fruit production today. In order to analyze the variables involved in this process, we performed complementary adsorption studies, we performed complementary adsorption studies using batches and undisturbed soil laboratory columns for both compounds. The results for pesticide transport through the lysimeters showed that less than 1% of chlorpyrifos was recovered in the leachates, while almost 17% was recovered for carbaryl. Having completed the experiment in undisturbed laboratory columns, soil analysis showed that chlorpyrifos mainly remained in the first 5 cm, while carbaryl moved down to the lower sections. These results can be explained in view of the sorption coefficient values (KD) obtained in horizons A and B for chlorpyrifos (393 and 184 L kg−1) and carbaryl (3.1 and 4.2 L kg−1), respectively. By integrating the results obtained in the different approaches, we were able to characterize the percolation modes of these pesticides in the soil matrix, thus contributing to the sustainable use of resources.Fil: Latini, Lorena A..
