Factors Affecting the Perception of Importance and Practice of Patient Safety Management among Hospital Employees in Korea
SummaryPurposeThe study was undertaken to identify factors affecting perception of the importance and practice of patient safety management (PSM) among hospital employees in Korea.MethodsThis study was conducted using a descriptive design and a self-report questionnaire. Two hundred and eighty employees were recruited from three hospitals using a convenience sampling method. Measures were perception of the importance, practice, and characteristics of PSM. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including t test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression.ResultsFactors affecting perception of the importance of PSM were whether hospital employees were in contact with patients while on duty, weekly working hours, education on PSM, and perceived adequacy of PSM system construction. Factors affecting the practice of PSM were perceived adequacy of work load, perceived adequacy of PSM system construction and perception of its importance.ConclusionThe findings of this study indicate a need for developing strategies to improve perception of the importance and practice of PSM among all hospital employees, and provide a reference for future experimental studies
Discovery of Novel Sources of Vitamin B12 in Traditional Korean Foods from Nutritional Surveys of Centenarians
Human longevity can be explained by a variety of factors, among them, nutritional factor would play an important role. In our study of Korean centenarians for their longevity, the apparent nutritional imbalance in the traditional semi-vegetarian diet raised a special attention, especially on vitamin B12 status, supplied by animal foods. Interestingly, we found that the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficient Korean centenarians was not higher compared with those from Western nations with animal-oriented traditional foods. We assumed that there might be some unveiled sources for vitamin B12 in the Korean traditional foods. Screening of vitamin B12 contents has revealed that some traditional soybean-fermented foods, such as Doenjang and Chunggukjang, and seaweeds contain considerable amounts of vitamin B12. Taken together, it can be summarized that the traditional foods, especially of fermentation, might be evaluated for compensation of the nutritional imbalance in the vegetable-oriented dietary pattern by supplying vitamin B12, resulting in maintenance of health status
Irreversible extinction of ferroelectric polarization in P(VDF-TrFE) thin films upon melting and recrystallization
We observed the irreversible extinction of ferroelectric polarization in spun coated poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) thin films upon melting and recrystallization. We investigate the alteration of the ferroelectric properties correlated with the preferred polymer crystal orientation with respect to the electrodes using grazing incident scattering, spectroscopy, and electron microscopes. Heat treatment above melting point gave rise to the significant reduction of the ferroelectric performance mainly caused by the modification of molecular orientation of polymer crystals whose c and b axes are perpendicular and parallel to the electrode surface, respectively, leading to almost zero effective electric field. Machine learning approaches for detecting tropical cyclone formation using satellite data
This study compared detection skill for tropical cyclone (TC) formation using models based on three different machine learning (ML) algorithms-decision trees (DT), random forest (RF), and support vector machines (SVM)-and a model based on Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Eight predictors were derived from WindSat satellite measurements of ocean surface wind and precipitation over the western North Pacific for 2005-2009. All of the ML approaches performed better with significantly higher hit rates ranging from 94 to 96% compared with LDA performance (~77%), although false alarm rate by MLs is slightly higher (21-28%) than that by LDA (~13%). Besides, MLs could detect TC formation at the time as early as 26-30 h before the first time diagnosed as tropical depression by the JTWC best track, which was also 5 to 9 h earlier than that by LDA. The skill differences across MLs were relatively smaller than difference between MLs and LDA. Large yearly variation in forecast lead time was common in all models due to the limitation in sampling from orbiting satellite. This study highlights that ML approaches provide an improved skill for detecting TC formation compared with conventional linear approaches
A Study of ICU Nursing Core Skill Design for Nursing Practice Education and Nursing Students’ Performance Competency
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to provide fundamental information for the establishment of ICU Nursing Core Skill for nursing students of Cheju Halla University, South Korea by clarifying contemporary nursing skills/activities used in an ICU.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a Nursing Activities Questionnaire that included 99 questions in a 4-Likert scale. Data were collected from 111 nurses working in ICUs within 6 different hospitals in Jeju and 168 3rd year students who were enrolled in the ICU core skills course with a response rate of 78.87%. The Important Index was calculated from the urgency multiplied by four and added frequency of nursing activities (The Important Index = the urgency×4 + frequency). The data was analysed with SPSS 20.0 program using descriptive statistics for frequency, urgency, importance and performance competency of nursing activities.
Results: Fifty nursing activities that had ranked upper 25 % of the Important Index score among 99 nursing activities were examined. When 14 ICU Nursing Skills used at the Cheju Halla University were matched with 50 nursing activities identified by the ICU RNs, upper 25% of the Importance Index score, 9 items were found to be consistent.
Conclusions: This research showed the frequency of relevant nursing interventions ranked within an Importance Index, and the focus of performance competency elements of nursing activities in ICU of hospitals in Jeju Island. Based on the results of this study, there is need to correct and revise ICU Core Skill elements within programs at Cheju Halla University. Future study is suggested to examine and evaluate the ability of nursing students who perform nursing activities shown as relevant and critical on the Importance Index in this study
