    Quantum Cryptography without Public Announcement of Bases

    This paper provides a simple variation of the basic ideas of the BB84 quantum cryptographic scheme leading to a method of key expansion. A secure random sequence (the bases sequence) determines the encoding bases in a proposed scheme. Using the bases sequence repeatedly is proven to be safe by quantum mechanical laws.Comment: 4 page

    Interstitial lung disease caused by TS-1: a case of long-term drug retention as a fatal adverse reaction

    TS-1 is an oral anti-cancer agent for gastric cancer with a high response rate and low toxicity. We report a case of long-term drug retention of TS-1 causing interstitial lung disease (ILD) as a fatal adverse reaction. A 65-year-old woman underwent a total gastrectomy with pathologic confirmation of gastric adenocarcinoma. She received 6 cycles of TS-1 and low-dose cisplatin for post-operative adjuvant chemotherapy followed by single-agent maintenance therapy with TS-1. After 8 months, the patient complained of a productive cough with sputum and mild dyspnea. A pulmonary evaluation revealed diffuse ILD in the lung fields, bilaterally. In spite of discontinuing chemotherapy and the administration of corticosteroids, the pulmonary symptoms did not improve, and the patient died of pulmonary failure. TS-1-induced ILD can be caused by long-term drug retention that alters the lung parenchyma irreversibly, the outcome of which can be life-threatening. Pulmonary evaluation for early detection of disease is recommended

    Brief Education on Microvasculature and Pit Pattern for Trainees Significantly Improves Estimation of the Invasion Depth of Colorectal Tumors

    Objectives. This study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of education for trainees on the gross findings identified by conventional white-light endoscopy (CWE), the microvascular patterns identified by magnifying narrow-band imaging endoscopy (MNE), and the pit patterns identified by magnifying chromoendoscopy (MCE) in estimation of the invasion depth of colorectal tumors. Methods. A total of 420 endoscopic images of 35 colorectal tumors were used. Five trainees estimated the invasion depth of the tumors by reviewing the CWE images before education. Afterwards, the trainees estimated the invasion depth of the same tumors after brief education on CWE, MNE and MCE images, respectively. Results. The initial diagnostic accuracy for deep submucosal invasion before education and after education on CWE, MNE, and MCE findings was 54.3%, 55.4%, 67.4%, and 76.6%, respectively. The diagnostic accuracy increased significantly after MNE education (P=0.028). The specificity for deep submucosal invasion before education and after education on CWE, MNE, and MCE findings was 47.9%, 45.7%, 65.0%, and 80.7%, respectively. The specificity increased significantly after MNE (P=0.002) and MCE (P=0.005) education. Conclusion. Brief education on microvascular pattern identification by MNE and pit pattern identification by MCE significantly improves trainees’ estimations of the invasion depth of colorectal tumors

    Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns and Macrolide Resistance Genes of β-Hemolytic Viridans Group Streptococci in a Tertiary Korean Hospital

    The aim of this study was to investigate antimicrobial susceptibilities and macrolide resistance mechanisms of β-hemolytic viridans group streptococci (VGS) in a tertiary Korean hospital. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of seven antimicrobials were determined for 103 β-hemolytic VGS isolated from various specimens. The macrolide resistance mechanisms of erythromycin-resistant isolates were studied by the double disk test and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The overall resistance rates of β-hemolytic VGS were found to be 47.5% to tetracycline, 3.9% to chloramphenicol, 9.7% to erythromycin, and 6.8% to clindamycin, whereas all isolates were susceptible to penicillin G, ceftriaxone, and vancomycin. Among ten erythromycin-resistant isolates, six isolates expressed a constitutive MLSB (cMLSB) phenotype, and each of the two isolates expressed the M phenotype, and the inducible MLSB (iMLSB) phenotype. The resistance rates to erythromycin and clindamycin of β-hemolytic VGS seemed to be lower than those of non-β-hemolytic VGS in our hospital, although cMLSB phenotype carrying erm(B) was dominant in β-hemolytic VGS

    Feature importance measures from random forest regressor using near-infrared spectra for predicting carbonization characteristics of kraft lignin-derived hydrochar

    This study investigated the feature importance of near-infrared spectra from random forest regression models constructed to predict the carbonization characteristics of hydrochars produced by hydrothermal carbonization of kraft lignin. The model achieved high coefficients of determination of 0.989, 0.988, and 0.985 with root mean square errors of 0.254, 0.003, and 0.008 when predicting the carbon content, atomic O/C ratio, and H/C ratio, respectively. The random forest models outperformed the multilayer perceptron models for all predictions. In the feature importance analysis, the spectral regions at 1600–1800 nm, the first overtone of C–H stretching vibrations, and 2000–2300 nm, the combination bands, were highly important for predicting the carbon content and O/C predictions, whereas the region at 1250–1711 nm contributed to predicting H/C. The random forest models trained with the high-importance regions achieved better prediction performances than those trained with the entire spectral range, demonstrating the usefulness of the feature importance yielded by the random forest and the feasibility of selective application of the spectral data.This study was supported by the Korea Forestry Promotion Institute through the R&D Program for Forest Science Technology funded by the Korea Forest Service (Project No. 2020215D10-2122-AC01)
