    Replica symmetry breaking transition of the weakly anisotropic Heisenberg spin glass in magnetic fields

    The spin and the chirality orderings of the three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass with the weak random anisotropy are studied under applied magnetic fields by equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations. A replica symmetry breaking transition occurs in the chiral sector accompanied by the simultaneous spin-glass order. The ordering behavior differs significantly from that of the Ising SG, despite the similarity in the global symmetry. Our observation is consistent with the spin-chirality decoupling-recoupling scenario of a spin-glass transition.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Management of an Accessory Bile Duct Leak Following Pancreaticoduodenectomy: A Novel Approach Utilizing a Percutaneous and Endoscopic Rendezvous.

    Biliary leaks are uncommon but morbid complications of pancreaticoduodenectomies, which have historically been managed with percutaneous drainage, reoperation, or a combination of both. We report a de novo percutaneous-endoscopic hepaticojejunostomy from an anomalous right hepatic duct injured during pancreaticoduodenectomy to the afferent bowel limb. The percutaneous-endoscopic hepaticojejunostomy was stented to allow for tract formation with successful stent removal after 5.5 months. One year after the creation of the percutaneous-endoscopic hepaticojejunostomy, the patient remains clinically well without evidence of biliary leak or obstruction

    Letter to the Editor:Liver Cell Models for Premature Termination Codon Readthrough Analyses

    Amzal and colleagues (1) reported about the prospect of pharmacological premature termination codon (PMT) readthrough of ABCB11 mRNA in bile salt export pump deficiency, the latter causing progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC)-type 2. The authors demonstrate that aminoglycoside antibiotics can stimulate readthrough of nonsense mutation-induced PMT in the ABCB11 mRNA, thereby rescuing full-length ABCB11 protein synthesis. The study provides proof-of-principle for a potential new therapy for nonsense mutation-associated PFIC2. The authors acknowledge that their cell line-based model does not take nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) into account, which however determines whether PFIC2 patients may actually benefit from PMT readthrough therapy. Importantly, other cell models exist that do take NMD into account and we believe these should be discussed as part of the path to bring their exciting findings closer to the clinic

    The performance of thin NaI(Tl) scintillator plate for dark matter search

    A thin (0.05cm) and wide area (5cmX5cm) NaI(Tl) scintillator was developed. The performance of the thin NaI(Tl) plate, energy resolution, single photoelectron energy and position sensitivity were tested. An excellent energy resolution of 20% (FWHM) at 60keV was obtained. The single photoelectron energy was calculated to be approximately 0.42 0.02keV. Position information in the 5cmx5cm area of the detector was also obtained by analyzing the ratio of the number of photons collected at opposite ends of the detector. The position resolution was obtained to be 1cm (FWHM) in the 5cmx5cm area.Comment: 10 pages. Accepted to Journal of Physical Society of Japa
