Natural components, particularly those derived from medicinal plants, provide a promising source of new antimicrobial agents for the treatment of respiratory infections. In this work, we studied the antimicrobial potency of Thymus capitatus ethanolic extract against nine microorganisms isolated from clinical material obtained from patients admitted to hospitals in Egypt and Germany with infections of the respiratory tract (bacterial sinusitis, laryngitis, pharyngitis and bronchitis) using the disc diffusion assay and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. All isolates obtained from the Giessen University Clinic (Germany) exhibit susceptibility of different extent to the plant extract tested. The growth inhibition zone diameters for nine strains were in the range of 13–15.5 mm at a concentration of 5 mg/disc. The extract produced large inhibition zones of 14–17 mm diameters for seven microbial strains obtained in Egypt although it failed to inhibit the growth of isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterococcus faecalis. In fact, most of the respiratory tract infections isolates from Egypt were generally more susceptible to the ethanolic extract of Thymus capitatus at lower MIC values than those obtained from Giessen University Clinic MIC values. The results of this study suggest that further delineation of bioactive phytomolecules of Thymus capitatus ethanolic extract will improve their potential application for the treatment of respiratory tract diseases

Deviant behavior of youth in the context of psychology and pedagogy

The article notes that Analysis of psychological and pedagogical literature allowed us to identify the following factors influencing formation and development of various deviant behavior forms: socio-economic, sociocultural, biological, psychological, pedagogical, subcultural. Most researchers consider the violation of social norms and norms of behavior as the main criterion for deviations and consider this phenomenon in term of “adaptation (socialization) - disadaptation (de-socialization)

Manganese in atherogenesis: Detection, origin, and a role

    Get PDF
The role of transition metal ions in atherogenesis is controversial; they may be involved in hydroxyl radical generation and can also catalyze the reactive oxygen species neutralization reaction as cofactors of antioxidant enzymes. Using EPR spectroscopy, we revealed that 70% of aorta specimens with atherosclerotic lesions possessed superoxide dismutase activity, 100% of the specimens initiated Fenton reaction and demonstrated the presence of manganese paramagnetic centers. The sodA gene encoding manganese-dependent bacterial superoxide dismutase was not found in the samples of atherosclerotic plaques by PCR using degenerate primers. The data obtained indicate prospects of manganese analysis as a marker element in the express diagnostics of atherosclerosis. © Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., 2011

Sensitivity of acute myeloid leukemia Kasumi-1 cells to binase toxic action depends on the expression of KIT and AML1-ETO oncogenes

Some RNases selectively attack malignant cells, triggering an apoptotic response and therefore are considered as alternative chemotherapeutic drugs. Here, we studied the effects of Bacillus intermedius RNase (binase) on murine myeloid progenitor cells FDC-P1, transduced FDC-P1 cells ectopically expressing mutated human KIT N822K oncogene and/or human AML1-ETO oncogene and human leukemia Kasumi-1 cells expressing both of these oncogenes. Expression of both KIT and AML1-ETO oncogenes makes FDC-P1 cells sensitive to the toxic effects of binase. Kasumi-1 cells were the most responsive to the toxic actions of binase among the cell lines used in this work with an IC 50 value of 0.56 μM. Either blocking the functional activity of the KIT protein with imatinib or knocking-down oncogene expression using lentiviral vectors producing shRNA against AML1-ETO or KIT eliminated the sensitivity of Kasumi-1 cells to binase toxic action and promoted their survival, even in the absence of KIT-dependent proliferation and antiapoptotic pathways. Here, we provide evidence that the cooperative effect of the expression of mutated KIT and AML1-ETO oncogenes is crucial for selective toxic action of binase on malignant cells. These findings can facilitate clinical applications of binase, providing a useful screen based on the presence of the corresponding target oncogenes in malignant cells. © 2011 Landes Bioscience
