Design-build experiences and student-centered-learning in biomedical engineering curricula
ABSTRACT The field of biomedical engineering (BME) is progressing rapidly into new areas, demanding the BME students to develop multidisciplinary skills, knowledge and a possibility for life-long learning. Changing the educational arena from teacher-centered to studentcentered-learning is a challenge in the BME domain. CDIO (Conceive Design Implement Operate) design-build courses, starting at the freshman year, makes laboratory and research environment enhance student-centered-learning resulting in communicative skills and teamwork. BME specialization, student-centered-learning and design-build experiences are introduced as an integrative part during the third and fourth academic year. Student-centeredlearning is often recognized as a situation where the learning possibilities are relevant to the students and where the students themselves determine the short-term goals. The expert or authority teaching has to be replaced by mentorship and facilitators. This is recognized in design-build courses. BME cases without a known solution can be treated and solved through integrative thinking and problem identification. The cognitive tasks require the acquisition and synthesis of information. It prepares students to participate in research laboratories as undergraduates and it prepares them for time-constrained problem-solving in the real world. For research studies and developments in working life, skills including dynamic group processes and awareness of the affective domain are necessary. BME education has three years experience of design-build courses from the freshman to the last academic year. Directives for the projects are based on clinical settings or demands engaging students to solve real world problems. Interaction with real customers or experts in the field encourages, stimulate and enhance all parts of the CDIO framework. To get a prosperous and successful work throughout the project cycle the project teams as we believe should be built on heterogeneous skill, age and gender, the affective domain all harmonized using a team contract. Project groups have also been enrolled with exchange students creating international groups. Feedback of the group process is given throughout the design-build project but especially after completion. Theoretical parts supplement the project and the group both in-depth but also to focus and harmonize the group towards the designbuild project outcome. Experts working in the field validate and test the project. Assessment is conformant to a student-centered-learning process as an integrative part of the course. Development of assessment protocols and strategies as an integrative part of the learning process must be stimulated and emphasized

Evaluation of a Fiber-Optic Fluorescence Spectroscopy System to Assist Neurosurgical Tumor Resections
The highly malignant brain tumor, glioblastoma multiforme, is difficult to totally resect without aid due to its infiltrative way of growing and its morphological similarities to surrounding functioning brain under direct vision in the operating field. The need for an inexpensive and robust real-time visualizing system for resection guiding in neurosurgery has been formulated by research groups all over the world. The main goal is to develop a system that helps the neurosurgeon to make decisions during the surgical procedure. A compact fiber optic system using fluorescence spectroscopy has been developed for guiding neurosurgical resections. The system is based on a high power light emitting diode at 395 nm and a spectrometer. A fiber bundle arrangement is used to guide the excitation light and fluorescence light between the instrument and the tissue target. The system is controlled through a computer interface and software package especially developed for the application. This robust and simple instrument has been evaluated in vivo both on healthy skin but also during a neurosurgical resection procedure. Before surgery the patient received orally a low dose of 5-aminolevulinic acid, converted to the fluorescence tumor marker protoporphyrin IX in the malignant cells. Preliminary results indicate that PpIX fluorescence and brain tissue autofluorescence can be recorded with the help of the developed system intraoperatively during resection of glioblastoma multiforme
Understanding student retention in computer science education: The role of environment, gains, barriers and usefulness
Researchers have been working to understand the high dropout rates in computer science (CS) education. Despite the great demand for CS professionals, little is known about what influences individuals to complete their CS studies. We identify gains of studying CS, the (learning) environment, degree’s usefulness, and barriers as important predictors of students’ intention to complete their studies in CS (retention). The framework aims to identify reasons that may contribute to dropout, using responses from 344 CS students. The eight-predictor model accounts for 39 % of the explained variance in student retention. A high level for degree’s usefulness has a positive effect on retention. Further, cognitive gains and supportive environment positively impact degree’s usefulness, while non-cognitive gains hinder it. Lastly, negative feelings (personal values) are found to reduce student retention. The overall outcomes are expected to contribute to theoretical development, in order to allow educators and policy makers to take appropriate measures to enhance students’ experience in CS studies and increase retention
Measurement invariance of the Facebook intrusion questionnaire across 25 countries
Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites. However, Facebook intrusion or addiction is a growing concern as it involves an excessive attachment to Facebook, which disrupts daily functioning. To date, few studies have examined whether cross-cultural differences in the measurement of Facebook addiction exist. The aim of this study was to investigate the cross-cultural validity and measurement invariance of the Facebook Intrusion Questionnaire (FIQ), one of the most widely used measures of Facebook addiction, across 25 countries (N = 12,204, 62.3% female; mean age = 25 years). Multigroup confirmatory factor analyses (MGCFA) assessed cross-cultural validity as well as invariance. Additionally, individual confirmatory factor analyses evaluated the factorial structure and measurement invariance across genders in each country. The FIQ demonstrated partial metric invariance across countries and metric (13 countries), scalar (11 countries) or residual (10 countries) invariance across genders within individual countries. A one-factor model indicated a good fit in 18 countries. Cronbach's alpha for the entire sample was.85. Our findings suggest that the FIQ may provide an adequate assessment of Facebook addiction that is psychometrically equivalent across cultures. Moreover, the questionnaire seems to be universal and suitable for studying different social media in distinct cultural environments. Consequently, this robust tool can be used to explore behaviours related to specific media that are particularly popular in any given country.</p
