miRNAs as Influencers of Cell-Cell Communication in Tumor Microenvironment
microRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level, inducing the degradation of the target mRNA or translational repression. MiRNAs are involved in the control of a multiplicity of biological processes, and their absence or altered expression has been associated with a variety of human diseases, including cancer. Recently, extracellular miRNAs (ECmiRNAs) have been described as mediators of intercellular communication in multiple contexts, including tumor microenvironment. Cancer cells cooperate with stromal cells and elements of the extracellular matrix (ECM) to establish a comfortable niche to grow, to evade the immune system, and to expand. Within the tumor microenvironment, cells release ECmiRNAs and other factors in order to influence and hijack the physiological processes of surrounding cells, fostering tumor progression. Here, we discuss the role of miRNAs in the pathogenesis of multicomplex diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, obesity, and cancer, focusing on the contribution of both intracellular miRNAs, and of released ECmiRNAs in the establishment and development of cancer niche. We also review growing evidence suggesting the use of miRNAs as novel targets or potential tools for therapeutic applications
Advances in vascular anatomy and pathophysiology using high resolution and multiparametric sonography
: B-mode and Color Doppler are the first-line imaging modalities in cardiovascular diseases. However, conventional ultrasound (US) provides a lower spatial and temporal resolution (70-100 frames per second) compared to ultrafast technology which acquires several thousand frames per second. Consequently, the multiparametric ultrafast platforms manage new imaging algorithms as high-frequency ultrasound, contrast-enhanced ultrasound, shear wave elastography, vector flow, and local pulse wave imaging. These advances allow better ultrasound performances, more detailed blood flow visualization and vessel walls' characterization, and many future applications for vascular viscoelastic properties evaluation. In this paper, we provide an overview of each new technique's principles and concepts and the real or potential applications of these modalities on the study of the artery and venous anatomy and pathophysiology of the upper limb before and after creating a native or prosthetic arterio-venous fistula. In particular, we focus on high-frequency ultrasound that could predict cannulation readiness and its potential role in the venous valvular status evaluation before vascular access creation; on contrast-enhanced ultrasound that could improve the peri-operative imaging evaluation during US-guided angioplasty; on shear wave elastography and local pulse wave imaging that could evaluate preoperative vessels stiffness and their potential predictive role in vascular access failure; on vector flow imaging that could better characterize the different components of the vascular access complex flow
Electromagnetic tunneling through a single-negative slab paired with a double-positive bi-layer
We show that resonant tunneling of electromagnetic fields can occur through a
three-layer structure composed of a single-negative (i.e., either
negative-permittivity or negative-permeability) slab paired with bi-layer made
of double-positive (i.e., positive permittivity and permeability) media. In
particular, one of the two double-positive media can be chosen arbitrarily
(even vacuum), while the other may exhibit extreme (either near-zero or very
high) permittivity/permeability values. Our results on this counterintuitive
tunneling phenomenon also demonstrate the possibility of synthesizing
double-positive slabs that effectively exhibit single-negative-like
wave-impedance properties within a moderately wide frequency range.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures (minor revisions
SANNS: Scaling Up Secure Approximate k-Nearest Neighbors Search
The -Nearest Neighbor Search (-NNS) is the backbone of several
cloud-based services such as recommender systems, face recognition, and
database search on text and images. In these services, the client sends the
query to the cloud server and receives the response in which case the query and
response are revealed to the service provider. Such data disclosures are
unacceptable in several scenarios due to the sensitivity of data and/or privacy
laws.
In this paper, we introduce SANNS, a system for secure -NNS that keeps
client's query and the search result confidential. SANNS comprises two
protocols: an optimized linear scan and a protocol based on a novel sublinear
time clustering-based algorithm. We prove the security of both protocols in the
standard semi-honest model. The protocols are built upon several
state-of-the-art cryptographic primitives such as lattice-based additively
homomorphic encryption, distributed oblivious RAM, and garbled circuits. We
provide several contributions to each of these primitives which are applicable
to other secure computation tasks. Both of our protocols rely on a new circuit
for the approximate top- selection from numbers that is built from comparators.
We have implemented our proposed system and performed extensive experimental
results on four datasets in two different computation environments,
demonstrating more than faster response time compared to
optimally implemented protocols from the prior work. Moreover, SANNS is the
first work that scales to the database of 10 million entries, pushing the limit
by more than two orders of magnitude.Comment: 18 pages, to appear at USENIX Security Symposium 202
Self-identification with another person's face. The time relevant role of multimodal brain areas in the enfacement illusion
Illusory subjective experience of looking at one's own face while in fact looking at another person's face can surprisingly be induced by simple synchronized visuo-tactile stimulation of the two faces. Recently, Apps and colleagues (Cerebral Cortex, 2014) investigated for the first time the role of visual unimodal and temporo-parietal multimodal brain areas in the enfacement illusion, and suggested a model in which multisensory mechanisms are crucial to construct and update self-face representation
Cognitive Pragmatic Treatment: The Importance Of Close Observation Of The Adaptation Process
Muthu, Nambi, Krishnan, & Vijayaraghavan (2023a) wrote an interesting paper discussing the effectiveness of a training that showed to determine improvement in Theory of Mind and Quality of Life in people with schizophrenia. As the authors of this commentary are the first and last authors of the paper presenting the Cognitive Pragmatic Treatment (Gabbatore et al., 2015), from which the authors state their treatment was adapted, we would like to highlight the potential of such results, but also provide some clarifications on the data presented
Risk measures on P(R) and value at risk with probability/loss function
We propose a generalization of the classical notion of the V@Rλ that takes into account not only the probability of the losses, but the balance between such probability and the amount of the loss. This is obtained by defining a new class of law invariant risk measures based on an appropriate family of acceptance sets. The V@Rλ and other known law invariant risk measures turn out to be special cases of our proposal. We further prove the dual representation of Risk Measures on math formula
