    Get PDF
Our prior scale for student nurses to rate image of the elderly is inadequate both in number of items used and in exaustiveness of possible images they have. This study attempts to construct a new rating scale by decreasing the number of the previous items and by incorporrating pertinent novel items. A new scale reported here consisits of 20 items, with 15 items being determined through a factor analysisi of the previous 38 items and 5 items being selected after a survey of relevant studies

A questionnaire survey was done by 76 third year-students of the nursing course before and after practicing at the two nursing homes in 1989. The same questions about their views and images of the aged person were given twice and compared. Question to image consists of 38 paired items respectively opposed to be rated on a seven-point scale. The results showed that their views and images had changed from idealistic to realistic as a result of their practices. These were some differences found in these changes by the home and the period of practice

BACKGROUND: The Ryanodine receptor 3 gene (RYR3) encodes an intracellular calcium channel that mediates the efflux of Ca(2+) from intracellular stores. Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the RYR3 gene have been shown to associate with stroke (rs877087) and carotid intima-media thickness (rs2229116) in two independent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in Caucasian. We investigated the effect of these two SNPs as well as the 31.1 kilobases spanning region on atherosclerosis in Japanese population. METHODS: Atherosclerotic severity was assessed by carotid artery (n = 1374) and pathological atherosclerosis index (PAI) (n = 1262), which is a macroscopic examination of the luminal surfaces of 8 systemic arteries in consecutive autopsy samples. 4 tag SNPs in the 31.1 Kb region, rs877087, rs2132207, rs658750 and rs2229116, were genotyped and haplotypes were inferred to study the association with atherosclerotic indices. RESULTS: rs877087 and rs2229116 were associated with PAI (OR = 2.07 [1.04-4.12] (95% CI), p = 0.038; and OR = 1.38 [1.02-1.86], p = 0.035, respectively). rs2229116 was also associated with common carotid atherosclerosis (OR = 1.45 [1.13-1.86], p = 0.003). The risk allele of rs2229116 was opposite from the original report. The haplotype block of this 31.1 Kb region was different between Caucasian and Japanese. Haplotype analysis revealed that only TAGG haplotype was associated with PAI (OR = 0.67 [0.48-0.94], p = 0.020) and atherosclerosis of common carotid artery (OR = 0.75 [0.58-0.98], p = 0.034). CONCLUSION: rs877087 and rs2229116 of RYR3 gene are associated with atherosclerosis severity in Japanese. The functional difference caused by rs2229116 needs to be investigated

A revision was made in a nursing curriculum in 1990. This study examined nursing students' perceived level of acquired 49 basic skills in nursing practices consisting of 11 basal elements of nursing skill, 19 skills in helping patients' daily activities, and 19 skills required in medical situations, comparing students receiving a new curriculum with those receiving an old one. Findings showed that in the rank ordering of all items from the best acquired to the least, collapsed across the two groups of students, 37% of the upper 10 items cocerned the skills in helping patients' daily activities, while 37% of the bottom 10 items concerned the skills required in medical situation. The students receiving the new curriculum perceived themselves better than those reseiving the old one for 15 items that were related with the basal elements of nursing skill and the skills in helping patients' daily activities, while the 6 items in the skills required in medical situations were perceived to be better acquired for the latter than the former students. The finding suggest that the new curriculum produced students who perceive themselves to be better achievers in the basic skills in nursing practices

AbstractBackgroundATP10D belongs to a subfamily of P-type ATPases implicated in phospholipids translocation from the exoplasmic to the cytoplasmic leaflet of cellular biological membrane. Previous genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified that a variant in Atp10d gene (rs2351791) associates with serum lipid profile and myocardial infarction. The objective of this study is to assess the effect of this variant on atherosclerosis in Japanese elderly population.MethodConsecutive autopsy cases registered in JG-SNP study were recruited (n = 1536). The samples were pathologically assessed for atherosclerosis using macroscopic examination of the formalin-fixed arteries, and coronary stenotic index (CSI), intracranial atherosclerotic index (ICAI) and pathological atherosclerotic index (PAI), which represent systemic arteries were calculated. The variant rs2351791 (G/T) in Atp10d gene was genotyped by Taqman genotyping assay and association determined.ResultBoth CSI and ICAI were significantly higher in GG genotype than GT genotype and TT genotype (p = 0.003 and p = 0.001, respectively). Both associations remained significant in minor allele dominant model after adjusting for age, hypertension, diabetes, HDL, smoking and drinking (p = 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). PAI was not associated with this variant. Consistent with the previous report, plasma HDL cholesterol level was lower in GG genotype compared to GT + TT genotypes (p = 0.001).ConclusionThe rs2351791 SNP in the Atp10d gene affects the susceptibility for cardiac and intracranial vascular stenosis in the elderly Japanese population

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Dietary 1(3)-behenoyl-2,3(1)-dioleoyl-<it>rac</it>-glycerol (BOO) has been reported to inhibit pancreatic lipase activity <it>in vitro </it>and suppress postprandial hypertriacylglycerolemia in humans. In the present study, the anti-obesity activities of BOO and its inhibitory effects on lymphatic triacylglycerol (TAG) absorption were investigated in rats.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In Experiment 1, rats were fed either BOO or soybean oil (SO) diet for 6 weeks. In the BOO diet, 20% of SO was replaced with an experimental oil rich in BOO. In Experiments 2 and 3, rats cannulated in the thoracic duct were administered an emulsions containing trioleoylglycerol (OOO) or an oil mixture (OOO:BOO, 9:1). Tri[1-14C]oleoylglycerol (14C-OOO) was added to the emulsions administered in Experiment 3.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No observable differences were detected in food intake or body weight gain between the BOO and SO groups in Experiment 1. Plasma and liver TAG concentrations and visceral fat weights were significantly lower in the BOO group than in the SO group. The apparent absorption rate of fat was significantly lower in the BOO group than in the SO group. In Experiment 2, the lymphatic recovery of oleic and behenic acids was significantly lower at 5 and 6 h after BOO administration than after OOO administration. In Experiment 3, the lymphatic recovery of 14C-OOO was significantly lower at 5 and 6 h after BOO administration than after OOO administration.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results suggest that BOO prevents deposition of visceral fat and hepatic TAG by lowering and delaying intestinal absorption of TAG.</p

This study investigated how nursing students perceived the elderly living in a nursing home for the elderly. Testing was done both before and after they experienced a two-week nursing practice at the nursing home. Three findings were obtained. (1) The students regarded the elderly not only as more humorous and vital but also less experienced, peaceful, and realistic before than after experiencing the practice. (2) Over a third of the students named humorous/not humorous as an item for which they experienced a marked change in image of the elderly. (3) The students generally regarded the elderly as being experienced, warm, bored, weak, and lonely. The findings indicate that the nursing practice provided the students with an opportunity to form better and realistic images of the elderly

The content of nursing education and the effective ways of studying nursing have been investigated by teachers of nursing. Therefore, in the lesson of "Basic Nursing Technique" did we examine the educational way in which the students' will to study nursing can be heightened and the students are able to work independently and creatively. we focused on the educational way which adopted the discovery study system in the lessons of "Help of Eating" and "Help of Excreting". From the viewpoint of the students' intention to study and their work, the effect of this educational way was researched according to their self-appreciation. As a result, the following four points were made clear by the introduction of the discovery study system. (1) The students could cooperate more easily in studying nursing. (2) The students' interest in nursing was heightened more than before. (3) The students could enhance their will to study nursing and work independently. (4) The items of "Sense of Purpose" and "Ingenuity" were less evaluaoed than the other items
