Indirect daylight oxidative degradation of polyethylene microplastics by a bio-waste modified TiO2-based material
Microplastics are recognized as an emerging critical issue for the environment. Here an innovative chemical approach for the treatment of microplastics is proposed, based on an oxidative process that does not require any direct energy source (irradiation or heat). Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) was selected as target commodity polymer, due to its widespread use, chemical inertness and inefficient recycling. This route is based on a hybrid material coupling titanium oxide with a bio-waste, rosin, mainly constituted by abietic acid, through a simple sol-gel synthesis procedure. The ligand-to-metal charge transfer complexes formed between rosin and Ti4+ allow the generation of reactive oxygen species without UV irradiation for its activation. In agreement with theorical calculations, superoxide radical ions are stabilized at ambient conditions on the surface of the hybrid TiO2. Consequently, an impressive degradation of LLDPE is observed after 1 month exposure in a batch configuration under indirect daylight, as evidenced by the products revealed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis and by chemical and structural modifications of the polymer surface. In a context of waste exploitation, this innovative and sustainable approach represents a promising cost-effective strategy for the oxidative degradation of microplastics, without producing any toxic by-products
New specific skeletal muscle mass index cut-offs for the assessment of sarcopenia in patients with severe obesity
IntroductionBioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is the most used tool in clinical practice to evaluate body composition in patients with obesity. The skeletal muscle index (SMI) defined by BIA has been proposed for the identification of sarcopenia, but there are currently no univocal cutoffs for this condition. In this study, we aimed: 1) to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with severe obesity using the current cutoffs of SMI; 2) to define new specific cutoffs; 3) to validate the new cutoffs; and 4) to re-determine the prevalence of sarcopenia.MethodsA total of 300 patients, 74% women and 26% men (mean age = 42.6 ±; 9 years), with morbid obesity (mean BMI = 46.7 ±; 6.5 kg/m2) followed by the Unit of Endocrinology from January 2014 to December 2020 were retrospectively evaluated. SMI was calculated as the skeletal muscle mass normalized for squared height through the BIA equation by Janssen et al.ResultsThe prevalence of sarcopenic obesity calculated using the cutoff points reported by De Rosa et al. (7.3 kg/h2 for women and 9.5 kg/h2 for men) was 2.3%. The prevalence of sarcopenia was calculated using the new cutoffs: with the cutoff obtained from the standard deviation method (8.2 kg/h2 for women and 10.2 kg/h2 for men), a prevalence of 14.7% was observed, whereas the prevalence reached 47.6% when using the cutoff calculated through the K-means unsupervised cluster (9.2 kg/h2 for women and 11.3 kg/h2 for men). The new cutoffs were validated with a second sample consisting of 300 patients with morbid obesity (BMI = 44.9 ±; 6.7 kg/m2): the rate of sarcopenic patients was still higher than that observed in the training cohort (56%). After the matching procedure (by BMI and age), the rates of sarcopenic patients were similar in both groups (50.2% in the validation group and 53% in the training group, p = 0.6).ConclusionThe new cutoffs calculated with cluster analysis could better identify sarcopenia in morbidly obese patients. However, further studies are needed to validate these cutoffs in different patient cohorts
Fungal Biodeterioration and Preservation of Miniature Artworks
The study of biodeterioration is an important issue to allow the best conservation and prevent the decay of cultural heritage and artworks. In Naples (Italy), a particular museum (Museodivino) preserves the miniature artworks representing Danteâs Divine Comedy and Nativity scenes, executed with organic-based materials in walnut and clay shells. Since they showed putative signs of biodeterioration, the first aim of this study was to verify the presence of microbial colonization. A culture-dependent approach and molecular biology allowed us to isolate and identify the sole fungal strain Aspergillus NCCD (Nativity and Danteâs Divine Comedy) belonging to the A. sydowii sub-clade. Based on this result, a sustainable and eco-friendly approach was applied to find a method to preserve the miniature artwork by contrasting the growth of the strain NCCD. Several essential oils used as a natural biocide were tested against Aspergillus strain NCCD belonging to the A. sydowii subclade to determine their potential antimicrobial activity. Results revealed that basil, cloves, fennel, and thyme essential oils exerted antifungal activity, although their effect depended also on the concentration used. Moreover, anoxic treatment and the control of the relative humidity were used in the presence of thyme, in vitro, and in vivo assays to define the impact on fungal growth. No fungal development was detected in vivo in the shells treated with thyme essential oil at high relative humidity after 60 days of incubation at 28 °C. These results highlighted that although relative humidity was the major factor affecting the development of the strain Aspergillus NDDC, the application of thyme in an anaerobic environment is essential in contrasting the fungal growth. Identifying the biodeterioration agent allowed us to plan an eco-friendly, non-destructive approach to be successfully used to guarantee the conditions suitable for conserving miniature artwork
Effect of Pre-Existent Sarcopenia on Oncological Outcome of Advanced Thyroid Cancer Patients Treated with Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors
(1) Background: Sarcopenia is associated with poor survival and treatment outcomes in several human cancers. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia in a cohort of 58 Caucasian patients with advanced thyroid cancer before and during TKI treatment. The impact of this condition on the outcome of patients was also evaluated. (2) Methods: Sarcopenia was evaluated using the Skeletal Muscle Index (SMI). (3) Results: Pre-treatment sarcopenia was found in 20.7% of patients and this condition significantly affected treatment outcome, emerging as the parameter that has the greatest impact on Progression Free Survival (PFS) (HR 4.29; 95% CI, 1.21–15.11, p = 0.02). A significant reduction in SMI values was observed 3 (p = 0.002) and 12 months (p < 0.0001) after TKI treatment. At a 12-month follow-up, sarcopenia prevalence increased up to 38.5%. Here, 12-month sarcopenia was predicted by a lower SMI (p = 0.029), BMI (p = 0.02) and weight (p = 0.04) and by the presence of bone metastases (p = 0.02). (4) Conclusions: This is the first study that evaluated sarcopenia prevalence and its change over time in Caucasian patients with advanced thyroid cancer under TKI therapy. Sarcopenia seems to be a prognostic factor of TKI treatment outcome, suggesting the importance of the assessment of the nutritional status and body composition in advanced thyroid cancer patients
Normalization of Spexin Levels in Patients with Obesity Submitted to Bariatric Surgery
Purpose Spexin is expressed by white fat tissue and other endocrine organs. A negative correlation between spexin and gluco-lipidic metabolism, energy homeostasis, and food intake has been reported. The objectives of this study are (1) to compare spexin levels between patients with obesity (study group) and normal-weight subjects (control group); (2) to evaluate spexin levels after bariatric surgery; and (3) to identify a correlation between spexin and weight loss/metabolic profile of patients with obesity.Materials and Methods We examined 53 patients with obesity (mean BMI 48.5 +/- 9.4 kg/m2) who underwent bariatric surgery, compared to 55 normal-weight subjects. Serum spexin levels were assessed at baseline (study and control group) and at 3 and 6 months after surgery in patients with obesity.Results Spexin at baseline was significantly lower in the study group (p < 0.0001). At 3 and 6 months after bariatric surgery, spexin significantly increased compared to pre-surgical levels (p < 0.001) reaching control group levels (p = 0.08) at 6 months. In patients with obesity, pre-surgical spexin was similar in patients with and without comorbidities. No correlation between spexin and C-reactive protein (p = 0.8) and HOMA index (p = 0.5) was found. A significant negative correlation between age and pre-surgical spexin was observed (p = 0.03). At multivariable analysis, no correlation between Delta spexin and pre-surgery BMI, HOMA index, age, and 6-month TWL% was found.Conclusion This study demonstrates that patients with obesity have significantly lower spexin levels than healthy subjects. After surgery, spexin levels of the study group become similar to those observed in the normal-weight group
