    Information experiences and practices of paediatric physicians in Nigeria: a phenomenological case study

    Adequate access to and appropriate use of medical evidence by clinicians have been posited as influencing the quality of clinical decisions and outcomes of patient care. The broad aim of this case study of a tertiary hospital was to provide understanding of how the information experiences and practices of paediatric physicians in Nigeria influenced their information practices and the potential implications for patient care. To achieve the research aim and objectives, a qualitative exploratory study was conducted using multiple sources of data: interviews, diaries, observation and social network chats. Overall, twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted, and seven clinicians provided a week-long information activity self-reports through diaries. Supplementary data were gained via the researcher's personal observation and social media chats with some participants. Paediatricians in the cadre of: Consultants, Senior Registrars, Registrars and Residents provided the data which was analysed using the interpretative method. The results indicate that the paediatricians' information needs were on: managing challenging cases, supporting diagnostic decisions, managing evolving diseases, managing illnesses in the tropical context, drugs and dosage, refreshing the memory, keeping updated, and passing professional examinations. In general: i)there was haphazard approach to information literacy tuition for the clinicians during professional education resulting in varied information capabilities, and inadequacy of knowledge and skills for good information practice; ii) obtaining medical information from colleagues was the predominant feature of paediatricians' information practices; iii) printed textbooks were the paediatricians preferred source for obtaining medical evidence, however, there was a growing popularity in the use of electronic medical information sources, including at the point of care; iv) a perception of inadequacy of the hospital library services resulted in the paediatricians developing rejection behaviour towards the services, labelled in this study as information service rejection behaviour (ISRB); v) there was general perception by the paediatricians that access to, and use of medical information supports patient care and achievement of better treatment outcomes. This perception instilled a sense of value for information use, demonstrated through the clinicians' dedication to the self-provision of information resources; vi) a dearth of medical resources germane to the contextual management of illnesses led to inadequate clinician knowledge in a good number of cases. A new model of information behaviour entitled 'the knowledge production model of the paediatricians' information behaviour has been developed from the findings of this study, thereby extending existing scholarly perspectives on people's information behaviour. The Kpro model enunciates the concept of 'knowledge-based information behaviour' (KIB) which was exhibited by the paediatricians. The study recommends that i) the information literacy skills training (ILST) model developed from the findings, be used as a practical tool for inculcating information literacy to the paediatricians at the level of residency training; ii) the hospital management/librarians prioritise the improvement of information resources, services and infrastructure e.g. reliable internet service, e-library at wards and consulting rooms, and clinical librarian services, to enhance good information practices among the clinicians; iii) retraining of the hospital librarians for increased service delivery effectiveness; iv) increased local research through the establishment of Journal Clubs by the paediatricians to enhance local publishing of medical literature

    An integrated model highlighting information literacy and knowledge formation in information behaviour

    Purpose This paper reviews key models of people’s information behaviour (IB) exploring the integration of the concepts of information literacy (IL) and knowledge in their designs. Scholarly perspectives portray information literacy as providing individuals with capacity for good information practices that result in generating new knowledge. It is surprising that this important perspective is not reflected in the reviewed information behaviour models. This paper contributes to the literature base by proposing a new model highlighting IL and knowledge as important concepts within the information behaviour discourse. Approach A discourse of the integration of information literacy and knowledge, which are integral factors, associated with IB, in selected IB models. Findings Identifying a need for information and understanding its context is an IL attribute. IL underpins information behaviour in providing awareness of information sources; how to search and use information appropriately for solving information needs and leveraging generated new knowledge. The generation of new knowledge results from using information, in a process that combines with sense-making and adaption. Correspondingly, the knowledge that develops, increases capability for sense-making and adaptation of information to suit various contexts of need; iteratively. Originality/value A new model of information behaviour; the Causative and Outcome Factors of Information Behaviour (COFIB) is proposed. COFIB stresses that information literacy and knowledge are prominent factors within the general framework of people’s information behaviour. The model emphasises knowledge generation as the outcome of information behaviour, applied in solving problems within specific contexts

    Obstacles to Provision and Use of Development Information in Rural Communities in Nigeria

    This paper focuses on the obstacles to development information provision and use in rural communities in Nigeria, where the impact of the oral tradition remains very strong. A review of the Nigerian rural community and its rural information environment is made. Requirements for development process in rural communities are taken into account. The paper discusses those attributes of information that are counter-productive to the development process in Nigerian rural communities, where more than 70% are known to be illiterate. The successful use of information as a resource for development depends in large part on knowledge of the nature of information and the ability of disseminators to apply appropriate communication mechanisms understandable to rural people. This has implications for people involved in the development of rural communities

    Information needs versus Information services: Assessing predictors of Secondary School Students with Visual Impairment Satisfaction at School Library Media Centres in South-Eastern Nigeria

    This study investigated the information needs versus Information services by assessing predictors of Secondary School Students with Visual Impairment Satisfaction at School Library Media Centres in South-Eastern Nigeria. This research embraced a positivist research paradigm in which quantitative research method was used to gather statistical data and generalizing it across various groups of respondents in order to elucidate a certain phenomenon.The population of the study is 95 consisting of 84 students with visual impairment enrolled in the secondary schools selected for the study and 11 SLMC personnel who are responsible for services to the students with visual impairment.The study revealed the following: (i) that the major information needs of the students with visual impairment focused on information needed to pass examinations and information to complete class assignments; (ii) the deficiency of majority of the library services for students with visual impairment in the SLMCs was confirmed; (iii) the opinion of students’ and personnel on the paucity of library services tallies; (iv) media-formats were indicated as either not readily available or not available; (v) there is no high level accessibility to school library resources; (vi) it was proven that a relative influence of information needs and accessibility exist in the library on user- satisfaction of the students with visual impairment; (vii) library services and media-format did not have significant influence on user-satisfaction; (viii) that user-satisfaction, information needs, library services, accessibility and media-format are positively related to library use among the students with visual impairment. Recommendations was made concerning issues and challenges on provision of special rescue votes for acquisition and internal production of media-formats in their school library media resource centres

    Rebranding Nigeria through Strategic Library Services

    The paper focuses on the participatory role of the library in the rebranding Nigeria project (RNP). The image of Nigeria has been damaged internally and externally, and needs urgent attention, hence the rebranding campaign. For the RNP to be sustained, it needs the collaborative efforts of organizations and governments. The paper identifies these collaborative efforts, and discusses strategic library services aimed at sustaining the RNP for generations to come. It concludes that libraries are established to serve as an instrument for national development
