Spectrum from the warped compactifications with the de Sitter universe
We discuss the spectrum of the tensor metric perturbations and the stability
of warped compactifications with the de Sitter spacetime in the
higher-dimensional gravity. The spacetime structure is given in terms of the
warped product of the non-compact direction, the spherical internal dimensions
and the four-dimensional de Sitter spacetime. To realize a finite bulk volume,
we construct the brane world model, using the cut-copy-paste method. Then, we
compactify the spherical directions on the brane. In any case, we show the
existence of the massless zero mode and the mass gap of it with massive
Kaluza-Klein modes. Although the brane involves the spherical dimensions, no
light massive mode is excited. We also investigate the scalar perturbations,
and show that the model is unstable due to the existence of a tachyonic bound
state, which seems to have the universal negative mass square, irrespective of
the number of spacetime dimensions.Comment: Journal version (JHEP
Causality in AdS/CFT and Lovelock theory
We explore the constraints imposed on higher curvature corrections of the
Lovelock type due to causality restrictions in the boundary of asymptotically
AdS space-time. In the framework of AdS/CFT, this is related to positivity of
the energy constraints that arise in conformal collider physics. We present
explicit analytic results that fully address these issues for cubic Lovelock
gravity in arbitrary dimensions and give the formal analytic results that
comprehend general Lovelock theory. The computations can be performed in two
ways, both by considering a thermal setup in a black hole background and by
studying the scattering of gravitons with a shock wave in AdS. We show that
both computations coincide in Lovelock theory. The different helicities, as
expected, provide the boundaries defining the region of allowed couplings. We
generalize these results to arbitrary higher dimensions and discuss their
consequences on the shear viscosity to energy density ratio of CFT plasmas, the
possible existence of Boulware-Deser instabilities in Lovelock theory and the
extent to which the AdS/CFT correspondence might be valid for arbitrary
dimensions.Comment: 35 pages, 20 figures; v2: minor amendments and clarifications

Causality constraints in AdS/CFT from conformal collider physics and Gauss-Bonnet gravity
We explore the relation between positivity of the energy constraints in
conformal field theories and causality in their dual gravity description. Our
discussion involves CFTs with different central charges whose description, in
the gravity side, requires the inclusion of quadratic curvature corrections. It
is enough, indeed, to consider the Gauss-Bonnet term. We find that both sides
of the AdS/CFT correspondence impose a restriction on the Gauss-Bonnet
coupling. In the case of 6d supersymmetric CFTs, we show the full matching of
these restrictions. We perform this computation in two ways. First by
considering a thermal setup in a black hole background. Second by scrutinizing
the scattering of gravitons with a shock wave in AdS. The different helicities
provide the corresponding lower and upper bounds. We generalize these results
to arbitrary higher dimensions and comment on some hints and puzzles they
prompt regarding the possible existence of higher dimensional CFTs and the
extent to which the AdS/CFT correspondence would be valid for them.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figures; v2: typos fixed, cosmetic amendments and

On Charged Lifshitz Black Holes
We obtain exact solutions of charged asymptotically Lifshitz black holes in
arbitrary (d+2) dimensions, generalizing the four dimensional solution
investigated in 0908.2611[hep-th]. We find that both the conventional
Hamiltonian approach and the recently proposed method for defining mass in
non-relativistic backgrounds do not work for this specific example. Thus the
mass of the black hole can only be determined by the first law of
thermodynamics. We also obtain perturbative solutions in five-dimensional
Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The ratio of shear viscosity over entropy density and the
DC conductivity are calculated in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet corrections.Comment: 24 pages, no figures, to appear in JHE
Analytical study on holographic superconductors in external magnetic field
We investigate the holographic superconductors immersed in an external
magnetic field by using the analytical approach. We obtain the spatially
dependent condensate solutions in the presence of the magnetism and find
analytically that the upper critical magnetic field satisfies the relation
given in the Ginzburg-Landau theory. We observe analytically the reminiscent of
the Meissner effect where the magnetic field expels the condensate. Extending
to the D-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet AdS black holes, we examine the influence
given by the Gauss-Bonnet coupling on the condensation. Different from the
positive coupling, we find that the negative Gauss-Bonnet coupling enhances the
condensation when the external magnetism is not strong enough.Comment: revised version, to appear in JHE
Moduli Stabilization and Cosmology of Type IIB on SU(2)-Structure Orientifolds
We consider type IIB flux compactifications on six-dimensional
SU(2)-structure manifolds with O5- and O7-planes. These six-dimensional spaces
allow not only for F_3 and H_3 fluxes but also for F_1 and F_5 fluxes. We
derive the four-dimensional N=1 scalar potential for such compactifications and
present one explicit example of a fully stabilized AdS vacuum with large volume
and small string coupling. We then discuss cosmological aspects of these
compactifications and derive several no-go theorems that forbid dS vacua and
slow-roll inflation under certain conditions. We also study concrete examples
of cosets and twisted tori and find that our no-go theorems forbid dS vacua and
slow-roll inflation in all but one of them. For the latter we find a dS
critical point with \epsilon numerically zero. However, the point has two
tachyons and eta-parameter \eta \approx -3.1.Comment: 35 pages + appendices, LaTeX2e; v2: numerical dS extremum added,

Localization of gravity on a de Sitter thick braneworld without scalar fields
In this work we present a simple thick braneworld model that is generated by
an intriguing interplay between a 5D cosmological constant with a de Sitter
metric induced in the 3-brane without the inclusion of scalar fields. We show
that 4D gravity is localized on this brane, provide analytic expressions for
the massive Kaluza-Klein (KK) fluctuation modes and also show that the spectrum
of metric excitations displays a mass gap. We finally present the corrections
to Newton's law due to these massive modes. This model has no naked
singularities along the fifth dimension despite the existence of a mass gap in
the graviton spectrum as it happens in thick branes with 4D Poincare symmetry,
providing a simple model with very good features: the curvature is completely
smooth along the fifth dimension, it localizes 4D gravity and the spectrum of
gravity fluctuations presents a mass gap, a fact that rules out the existence
of phenomenologically dangerous ultralight KK excitations in the model. We
finally present our solution as a limit of scalar thick branes.Comment: 11 pages in latex, no figures, title and abstract changed, a new

Black Holes in Quasi-topological Gravity
We construct a new gravitational action which includes cubic curvature
interactions and which provides a useful toy model for the holographic study of
a three parameter family of four- and higher-dimensional CFT's. We also
investigate the black hole solutions of this new gravity theory. Further we
examine the equations of motion of quasi-topological gravity. While the full
equations in a general background are fourth-order in derivatives, we show that
the linearized equations describing gravitons propagating in the AdS vacua
match precisely the second-order equations of Einstein gravity.Comment: 33 pages, 4 figures; two references adde
May Measurement Month 2017: An analysis of blood pressure screening results in Nepal - South Asia
Hypertension is the leading risk factor of mortality in Nepal accounting for ∼33 000 deaths in 2016. However, more than 50% of the hypertensive patients are unaware of their status. We participated in the May Measurement Month 2017 (MMM17) project initiated worldwide by the International Society of Hypertension to raise the awareness on the importance of blood pressure (BP) screening. In this paper, we discuss the screening results of MMM17 in Nepal. An opportunistic cross-sectional survey of volunteers aged ≥18 years was carried out in May 2017 following the standard MMM protocol. Data were collected from 18 screening sites in 7 districts covering 5 provinces. Screenings were conducted either in health facilities, public places, or participants' homes. Trained volunteers with health science background and female community health volunteers were mobilized to take part in the screening. A total of 5972 individuals were screened and of 5968 participants, for whom a mean of the 2nd and 3rd readings was available, 1456 (24.4%) participants had hypertension; 908 (16.8%) of those not receiving treatment were hypertensive; and 248 (45.2%) of those being treated had uncontrolled BP. MMM17 is the first nationwide BP screening campaign undertaken in Nepal. Given the suboptimal treatment and control rates identified in the study, there is a strong imperative to scale up hypertension prevention, screening, and management programmes. These results suggest that opportunistic screening can identify significant numbers with hypertension. Mobilization of existing volunteer networks and support of community stakeholders, would be necessary to improve the overall impact and sustainability of future screening programmes
q-Form fields on p-branes
In this paper, we give one general method for localizing any form (q-form)
field on p-branes with one extra dimension, and apply it to some typical
p-brane models. It is found that, for the thin and thick Minkowski branes with
an infinite extra dimension, the zero mode of the q-form fields with q<(p-1)/2
can be localized on the branes. For the thick Minkowski p-branes with one
finite extra dimension, the localizable q-form fields are those with q<p/2, and
there are also some massive bound Kaluza-Klein modes for these q-form fields on
the branes. For the same q-form field, the number of the bound Kaluza-Klein
modes (but except the scalar field (q=0)) increases with the dimension of the
p-branes. Moreover, on the same p-brane, the q-form fields with higher q have
less number of massive bound KK modes. While for a family of pure geometrical
thick p-branes with a compact extra dimension, the q-form fields with q<p/2
always have a localized zero mode. For a special pure geometrical thick
p-brane, there also exist some massive bound KK modes of the q-form fields with
q<p/2, whose number increases with the dimension of the p-brane.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, published versio
