Impact of the Internet on Final Year Students\u27 Research: A Case Study of Covenant University, Ota, Nigeria

The 21st century is characterized by advancements in information and communication technology (ICT), including the Internet. Final year students of Covenant University implore the use of the Internet in writing their projects. This paper examines the extent of accessibility and use of the Internet by these students and the impact the Internet has on their projects. A questionnaire was used for data collection. A total of 150 questionaires were distributed to students from each of the three colleges in the university. The results show that all respondents used the Internet for their project work. Nearly all indicated that the Internet has an impact on their projects, especially in the areas of quality of work, speed, time economy, and recency of materials. Recommendations for improvement include provision of wireless Internet access points and training and retraining of students to acquire computer and Internet search skills

Perception of Social Media Use for Information Service Delivery in University Libraries: A Case Study of Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan

Purpose: As one of the first university libraries to embrace ICT adoption in the country, it was necessary to ascertain how the library is faring in terms of digital services provision using social media tools.Methodology: The survey design was applied alongside the accidental/convenient sampling technique. The population comprised 300 library patrons and library personnel in KDL. The method of data gathering was the questionnaire. Two hundred and thirty-three (233:77.7%) response rate was observed. The descriptive and inferential statistical tools were applied.Findings: patrons were positive about the provision of certain services using SMTs, but in terms of actual use, there was a lack of interest. Similarly, there was a low frequency of the use of available SMTs in the library; however, Facebook was the most utilized SMT by patrons, followed by Blog. The paper concludes that it is not enough to deploy relevant SMTs but to develop patron-focused services that will endear patrons to use them.Originality/value: It is an in-depth case study that explored patrons’ disposition towards information service delivery using available social media tools in KDL

Examination of the Nexus between Academic Libraries and Accreditation: Lessons from Nigeria.

The article investigated the nexus between academic libraries and accreditation in the higher institutions with special focus on the Nigerian experience. It showed that all accreditation agencies place a high premium on library provisions as a major component of requisite benchmarks in determining the status of the program or institutions being assessed. Academic libraries help to enrich formal classroom curricular and act as a broadening influence on lecturers and students as well as nurture in them the virtue of independent inquiry. State-of-the-art academic libraries confer prestige on the institutions and have tremendous impact on student retention, rankings, and high profiling of parent institution during accreditation. The article noted that there exists strong intrinsic and sometimes imperceptible relationship between academic libraries and higher education. It recommended institutionalization of global and regional ranking of academic libraries, among others

Librarians’ perception of disaster preparedness as precursor for effective preservation and conservation of library resources in Nigerian university libraries

The study examined librarians' perception of disaster preparedness and its effect on effective preservation and conservation of library resources, focusing on university libraries in the Southwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted. The university libraries that provided the data and institutional setting for the study were randomized using the ballot system after which total enumeration technique was employed to take complete census of the population. The population comprised 327 librarians and library officers drawn across federal and state university libraries in the region. The questionnaire and interview methods were used for data collection. Results affirmed, as postulated, that preservation and conservation of information resources would be more effective if disaster preparedness measures are incorporated into the process. As a result, both approaches were found to be complementary. It was also discovered that the core digital preservation strategies are not being practiced in university libraries in the studied region. Consequently, it was recommended that effort aimed at all forms of preservation strategies should be employed to ensure the longevity and sustainability of all information resources

Impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on the Study Habits of Students of Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, Ogun State of Nigeria

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has changed the landscape of various institutions of learning. This study is on the impact of ICT on the study habit of students of Iganmode Grammar School Ota. The research revealed a positive significant relationship between the use of ICT and improved study habits of students. However, the work discovered that the available facilities are not sufficient for the students. A total of 156(32.7%) of the total respondents engage ICT for reading various materials through the internet while 152 (31.9%) use it to compare lesson notes. Others use it to send mails, chat, etc. (85.3%) of the respondents maintained that it elongates their attention span. Other benefits include improvement on students’ understanding and increased access to information. In spite of the importance of Information and Communication Technology, the work discovered that less than (50%) of the respondents have participated in ICT skill acquisition programmes. The findings equally highlighted some challenges hindering students’ effective use of ICT, among which are staff attitude, power failure, ICT phobia among others. The study therefore recommended that the Management of Iganmode Grammar school and the Ogun State Government should upgrade ICT facilities in the school, students should be trained to acquire ICT skills while the staff in charge of ICT laboratory need develop a positive attitude towards handling students

Job-related Stress and Job Performance among Librarians in University Libraries in Nigeria

This study investigated the incidence of job-related stress and how it affects job performance of librarians and library officers. Three universities in Lagos State, Nigeria were selected for the study. The study adopted a survey method and questionnaire was used to gather data from 86 librarians and library officers from the university libraries. The study revealed that jobrelated stress is prevalent among the librarians and library officers. It identified lack of opportunity for career development, low salary/compensation, work interference with family time, the absence of training, lack of motivation, lack of co-operation and lack of conducive working environment as factors responsible for job stress. The study further identified low productivity, increased absenteeism, hypertension, job dissatisfaction, frustration, depression and negative job attitude as effects of stress on the job performance of librarians and library officers as consequences of stress. The study concluded that librarians and library officers in Lagos state experienced the stress of exhaustion and burnout resulting from too many routines leading to tiredness and lack of enthusiasm, lack of motivation and frustration. They also experience time-related stresses which include a shortage of time to attend to students with different information needs almost at the same time and time to meet up with publications, The study recommends efficient and effective service delivery in the nation's university libraries, parent institutions should help in reducing sources of stress among library staff in university libraries, among others

Twenty-first century technology of combating wildfire

Wildfire causes havoc and serious destruction of forest resources and wildlife. It also causes occasionally serious damages to human lives and properties. Current technology of fighting wildfire employs fire retardant chemicals, which pollute the environment seriously, and damages both wild and aquatic lives. Based on the new novel technology, it is possible that in the near future the industrial emissions that pollute the environments and cause health problems would be completely captured in frozen solid forms of emissions products. One of these is the frozen carbon dioxide, which is known as dry ice, which would be available than in hundreds of millions of tons in any country. Cost analysis shows that the power and cement industries would significantly benefit by selling the dry ice captured using the technology, just at $0.07 per kg. The present paper discusses the new technology of applying dry ice that would thus be abundantly available in fighting a wildfire. The paper discusses how the new technology would be by far superior to current technology that employs fire retardant chemicals in terms of environmental protection and the cost-effectiveness over the current technology
