    A simple morphodynamic model for sand banks and large-scale sand pits subject to asymetrical tides

    We extend existing knowledge on theoretical growth characteristics of tidal sand banks by including asymmetrical tides with an M0, M2 and M4-constituent, thus allowing for migration. Furthermore, in the context of the continuously increasing demand on the Dutch sand market, we show that creating a large-scale offshore sand pit has long-term morphological implications, both for the pit itself and the surrounding area. The pit deepens, while around it a sand bank pattern emerges, spreading at a constant rate of the order of tens to hundred metres per year

    Spin-charge-lattice coupling near the metal-insulator transition in Ca3Ru2O7

    We report x-ray scattering studies of the c-axis lattice parameter in Ca3Ru2O7 as a function of temperature and magnetic field. These structural studies complement published transport and magnetization data, and therefore elucidate the spin-charge-lattice coupling near the metal-insulator transition. Strong anisotropy of the structural change for field applied along orthogonal in-plane directions is observed. Competition between a spin-polarized phase that does not couple to the lattice, and an antiferromagnetic metallic phase, which does, gives rise to rich behavior for B \parallel b.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys.     Consistent interactions that can be added to a free, Abelian gauge theory comprising a finite collection of BF models and a finite set of two-form gauge fields (with the Lagrangian action written in first-order form as a sum of Abelian Freedman-Townsend models) are constructed from the deformation of the solution to the master equation based on specific cohomological techniques. Under the hypotheses of smoothness in the coupling constant, locality, Lorentz covariance, and Poincare invariance of the interactions, supplemented with the requirement on the preservation of the number of derivatives on each field with respect to the free theory, we obtain that the deformation procedure modifies the Lagrangian action, the gauge transformations as well as the accompanying algebra. The interacting Lagrangian action contains a generalized version of non-Abelian Freedman-Townsend model. The consistency of interactions to all orders in the coupling constant unfolds certain equations, which are shown to have solutions.Comment: LaTeX, 62 page

    Cosmic Ray in the Northern Hemisphere: Results from the Telescope Array Experiment

    The Telescope Array (TA) is the largest ultrahigh energy (UHE) cosmic ray observatory in the northern hemisphere TA is a hybrid experiment with a unique combination of fluorescence detectors and a stand-alone surface array of scintillation counters. We will present the spectrum measured by the surface array alone, along with those measured by the fluorescence detectors in monocular, hybrid, and stereo mode. The composition results from stereo TA data will be discussed.     We report the results of low temperature transport, specific heat and magnetisation measurements on high quality single crystals of the bilayer perovskite Sr3Ru2O7, which is a close relative of the unconventional superconductor Sr2RuO4. Metamagnetism is observed, and transport and thermodynamic evidence for associated critical fluctuations is presented. These relatively unusual fluctuations might be pictured as variations in the Fermi surface topography itself. No equivalent behaviour has been observed in the metallic state of Sr2RuO4.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Revtex 3.

    Superconductivity in the Correlated Pyrochlore Cd_2Re_2O_7

    We report the observation of superconductivity in high-quality Cd2_2Re2_2O7_7 single crystals with room-temperature pyrochlore structure. Resistivity and ac susceptibility measurements establish an onset transition temperature Tconset_c^{onset} = 1.47 K with transition width Δ\DeltaTc_c = 0.25 K. In applied magnetic field, the resistive transition shows a type-II character, with an approximately linear temperature-dependence of the upper critical field Hc2_{c2}. The bulk nature of the superconductivity is confirmed by the specific heat jump with Δ\DeltaC = 37.9 mJ/mol-K. Using the γ\gamma value extracted from normal-state specific heat data, we obtain Δ\DeltaC/γ\gammaTc_c = 1.29, close to the weak coupling BCS value. In the normal state, a negative Hall coefficient below 100 K suggests electron-like conduction in this material. The resistivity exhibits a quadratic T-dependence between 2 and 60 K, i.e., ρ=ρ0\rho =\rho_0+AT2^2, indicative of Fermi-liquid behavior. The values of the Kadowaki-Woods ratio A/γ2\gamma^2 and the Wilson ratio are comparable to that for strongly correlated materials.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
