    Global Optimization for Future Gravitational Wave Detectors' Sites

    We consider the optimal site selection of future generations of gravitational wave detectors. Previously, Raffai et al. optimized a 2-detector network with a combined figure of merit. This optimization was extended to networks with more than two detectors in a limited way by first fixing the parameters of all other component detectors. In this work we now present a more general optimization that allows the locations of all detectors to be simultaneously chosen. We follow the definition of Raffai et al. on the metric that defines the suitability of a certain detector network. Given the locations of the component detectors in the network, we compute a measure of the network's ability to distinguish the polarization, constrain the sky localization and reconstruct the parameters of a gravitational wave source. We further define the `flexibility index' for a possible site location, by counting the number of multi-detector networks with a sufficiently high Figure of Merit that include that site location. We confirm the conclusion of Raffai et al., that in terms of flexibility index as defined in this work, Australia hosts the best candidate site to build a future generation gravitational wave detector. This conclusion is valid for either a 3-detector network or a 5-detector network. For a 3-detector network site locations in Northern Europe display a comparable flexibility index to sites in Australia. However for a 5-detector network, Australia is found to be a clearly better candidate than any other location.Comment: 30 pages, 23 figures, 2 table

    Psychometrics of the Functional Oral Intake Scale for Infants

    This study aimed to investigate the reliability and validity of the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS) for infants. Infants (age, <1 year) who underwent a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) were included in this retrospective study. Their nutrition records at the time of the VFSS were separately evaluated by two raters using the five-point FOIS for infants. Categorical swallowing and aspiration impairment scale data were also obtained from the VFSS. The inter-rater reliability of the FOIS for infants was high (95.5% absolute agreement) among the 201 evaluated infants, and this scale was significantly correlated with aspiration severity in the VFSS. We also investigated whether infants with partial oral feeding (POF) at the FOIS evaluation had achieved full oral feeding within 1 year of the evaluation and used this information to estimate whether the caloric contribution, as well as consistency of oral feeding, affected the feeding outcomes. This analysis included 33 infants who were receiving both oral and tube feeding (i.e., POF). Among them, 26 infants achieved full oral feeding (FOF) without tube feeding after 1 year. Their initial contribution from oral feeding was higher than that in infants who still maintained POF after 1 year (28.46 ± 22.79 vs. 6.00 ± 5.45%, p < 0.001). The five-point FOIS for infants, which reflected the expansion of their oral diet with growth, had adequate reliability and validity. The caloric contribution as well as consistency of oral feeding could be used to distinguish FOIS levels 2 and 3, which correspond to the POF status in infants

    Zn-triggered critical behavior of the formation of highly coherent domains in a Mg1-xZnxO thin film on Al2O3

    A series of Mg1-xZnxO (x=0, 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15) thin films were grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition on a (0001) sapphire substrate, and the structural characteristics of Mg1-xZnxO thin films were investigated by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The increasing amount of Zn was found to gradually enhance the structural coherence of Mg1-xZnxO films. For a sample with 15 at. % of Zn, in particular, the formation of highly coherent domains in Mg1-xZnxO was observed to be triggered, with an accompanying phase separation of ZnO. An integrated intensity analysis predicted that the critical concentration x(c) of Zn at which the phase separation occurred was 0.086+/-0.015, and that the highly coherent domains in Mg1-xZnxO accounted for 12+/-1%.open11910sciescopu

    Suppression of ferromagnetic ordering in doped manganites: Effects of the superexchange interaction

    From a Monte Carlo study of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model for doped manganites, including the antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction (JAFJ_{AF}), we found that the ferromagnetic ordering was suppressed as JAFJ_{AF} increased. The ferromagnetic transition temperature TcT_c, as obtained from a mean field fit to the calculated susceptibilities, was found to decrease monotonically with increasing JAFJ_{AF}. Further, the suppression in TcT_c scales with the bandwidth narrowing induced by the antiferromagnetic frustration originating from JAFJ_{AF}. From these results, we propose that the change in the superexchange interaction strength between the t2gt_{2g} electrons of the Mn ions is one of the mechanisms responsible for the suppression in TcT_c observed in manganites of the type (La0.7y_{0.7-y}Pry_{y})Ca0.3_{0.3}MnO3_3.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures.     Detecting Variability in Massive Astronomical Time-series Data. II. Variable Candidates in the Northern Sky Variability Survey

    We present variability analysis of data from the Northern Sky Variability Survey (NSVS). Using the clustering method, which defines variable candidates as outliers from large clusters, we cluster 16,189,040 light curves having data points at more than 15 epochs as variable and non-variable candidates in 638 NSVS fields. Variable candidates are selected depending on how strongly they are separated from the largest cluster and how rarely they are grouped together in eight-dimensional space spanned by variability indices. All NSVS light curves are also cross-correlated with IRAS , AKARI, Two Micron All Sky Survey, Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and GALEX objects, as well as known objects in the SIMBAD database. The variability analysis and cross-correlation results are provided in a public online database, which can be used to select interesting objects for further investigation. Adopting conservative selection criteria for variable candidates, we find about 1.8 million light curves as possible variable candidates in the NSVS data, corresponding to about 10% of our entire NSVS sample. Multi-wavelength colors help us find specific types of variability among the variable candidates.     Spectral Deconvolution Analysis of Mafic Mineral in Irregular Mare Patches on the Moon

    Irregular mare patches (IMPs), recently discovered on the Moon, are eruptions of magma on the lunar surface, and their origins are still in question. While prior studies on IMPs have mainly focused on optical image analysis, in this study, an analysis of the characteristics of minerals is performed exemplary for the first time. Modified Gaussian model (MGM) deconvolution was applied to the infrared spectrum to confirm the properties of the mafic mineral. Mafic minerals were analyzed for 6 olivine-rich (Ol-rich) IMPs out of 91 currently reported, and only 4 of them yielded results of significance. All four sites showed more abundance of Fe than Mg, and manifested a weak relationship with Mg-suite rock. However, a problem was discovered during the MGM application process due to pilot implementation. In order to solve this problem, it is required to adjust the MGM initial condition settings more precisely and to increase the signal to noise ratio of the observation data. Moreover, it is necessary to analyze the mineral properties for all IMPs considering minerals other than Ol and utilize them to deduce the origin of the IMPs

    Reliability and validity of knee extensor strength measurements using a portable dynamometer anchoring system in a supine position

    Background Muscle strength measurements using hand-held dynamometry (HHD) can be affected by the inadequate strength of the tester and lack of stabilization of the participants and the device. A portable HHD anchoring system was designed that enabled the measurement of isometric knee extensor muscle strength in a supine position. This can be used with individuals who are unable to assume the sitting position required for the measurement of knee extensor strength in conventional isokinetic dynamometry (IKD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of knee extensor strength measurements using this device. Methods The maximal knee extensor isometric strength of the dominant leg in healthy adults aged 20 to 40 years was tested. Three trials of three contractions were assessed by two raters using the portable dynamometer anchoring system whilst the participant was in the supine position. After the three measurement trials, peak knee extensor torque was evaluated using IKD. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and 95% limits of agreement (LOA) for intra- and inter-rater reliability were obtained. Results Thirty-nine participants (19 male and 20 female, aged 30.08 ± 4.16 y), completed the three measurement trials. The ICC for intra-rater reliability was 0.98 for the maximum measurements of knee extensor strength (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.96–0.98) and 0.98 (95% CI: 0.96–0.99) for inter-rater reliability. The mean difference (%) between the maximum knee extensor strength measurements of each trial was 1.02% (LOA range: − 11.13 to 13.16%) for intra-rater and − 1.44% (LOA range: − 13.98 to 11.08%) for inter-rater measurements. The Pearson correlation coefficient of the maximum voluntary peak torque measurements with the portable dynamometer anchoring system and IKD was 0.927. Conclusions The portable dynamometer anchoring system is a reliable and valid tool for measuring isometric knee extensor strength in a supine position. Future clinical feasibility studies are needed to determine if this equipment can be applied to people with severe illness or disabilities.     Unconventional superconductivity of NdFeAsO0.82F0.18 indicated by the low temperature dependence of the lower critical field Hc1

    We measured the initial M-H curves for a sample of the newly discovered superconductor NdFeAsO0.82Fe0.18, which had a critical temperature, Tc, of 51 K, and was fabricated at the high pressure of 6 GPa. The lower critical field, Hc1, was extracted from the deviation point of the Meissner linearity in the M-H curves, which show linear temperature dependence in the low temperature region down to 5 K. The Hc1(T) indicates no s-wave superconductivity, but rather an unconventional superconductivity with a nodal gap structure. Furthermore, the linearity of Hc1 at low temperature does not hold at high temperature, but shows other characteristics, indicating that this superconductor might have multi-gap features. Based on the low temperature nodal gap structure, we estimate that the maximum gap magnitude delta 0 = (1.6+- 0.2) kBTc.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
