    Effects of image lag on real-time target tracking in radiotherapy

    There is a concern that image lag may reduce accuracy of real-time target tracking in radiotherapy. This study was performed to investigate influence of image lag on the accuracy of target tracking in radiotherapy. Fluoroscopic image: were obtained using a direct type of dynamic flat-panel detector (FPD) system under conditions of target tracking during radiotherapy. The images continued to be read out after X-irradiations and cutoff, and image lag properties in the system were then determined. Subsequently, a tungsten materials plate with a precision edge was mounted on to a motor control device, which provided a constant velocity. The plate was moved into the center of the detector at movement rate of 1 and 20 mm/s, covering lung tumor movement of normal breathing, and MTF and profile curves were measured on the edges covering and uncovering the detector. A lung tumor with blurred edge due to image lag was simulated using the results and then superimposed on breathing chest radiographs of a patient. The moving target with and without image lag was traced using a template-matching technique. In the results, the target could be traced within a margin for error ii external radiotherapy. The results indicated that there was no effect of image lag on target tracking in usual breathing speed in a radiotherapy situation. Further studies are required to investigate influence by the other factors, such a: exposure dose, target size and shape, imaging rate, and thickness of a patient\u27s body. © 2010 SPIE

    An Autopsy Case of Anaplastic Pancreatic Ductal Carcinoma (Spindle Cell Type) Multiple Onset in the Pancreas

    This is a case of a 75-year-old man who was diagnosed with anaplastic pancreatic ductal carcinoma (spindle cell type). His image findings showed pancreatic head cysts and pancreatic head, body, and tail tumors respectively. EUS-FNA was performed to the pancreatic head and pancreatic body tumors, and the same high atypical type cells suspected of cancer were obtained from either specimen, and finally total pancreatectomy was performed. On the specimen, there were 4 lesions in the pancreas; histology showed that the same anaplastic pancreatic ductal carcinoma (spindle cell type) was obtained from the pancreatic head cyst and the pancreatic tumors

    Spontaneous Myocarditis in Mice Predisposed to Autoimmune Disease: Including Vaccination-Induced Onset

    Nonobese diabetic (NOD)/ShiLtJ mice, such as biobreeding rats, are used as an animal model for type 1 diabetes. Diabetes develops in NOD mice as a result of insulitis, a leukocytic infiltrate of the pancreatic islets. The onset of diabetes is associated with moderate glycosuria and nonfasting hyperglycemia. Previously, in NOD/ShiLtJ mice spontaneously developing type 1 diabetes, the possible involvement of decreased expression of nuclear factor-kappa B1 (NF-κB1) (also known as p50) in the development of type 1 diabetes was investigated. In response to these arguments, NOD mice with inconsistent NF-κB1 expression were established. Surprisingly, the majority of NOD Nfκb1 homozygote mice were found to die by the eighth week of life because of severe myocarditis. The incidence of spontaneous myocarditis in mice was slightly higher in males than in females. Furthermore, insulitis was observed in all NOD Nfκb1 heterozygote mice as early as 4 months of age. Additionally, in NOD Nfκb1 heterozygote mice, myocarditis with an increase in cTnT levels due to influenza or hepatitis B virus vaccination was observed with no significant gender difference. However, myocarditis was not observed with the two types of human papillomavirus vaccination. The results of immunological assays and histopathological examinations indicated that vaccination could induce myocarditis in genetically modified mice.
