    Variation in helper effort among cooperatively breeding bird species is consistent with Hamilton's Rule.

    Investment by helpers in cooperative breeding systems is extremely variable among species, but this variation is currently unexplained. Inclusive fitness theory predicts that, all else being equal, cooperative investment should correlate positively with the relatedness of helpers to the recipients of their care. We test this prediction in a comparative analysis of helper investment in 36 cooperatively breeding bird species. We show that species-specific helper contributions to cooperative brood care increase as the mean relatedness between helpers and recipients increases. Helper contributions are also related to the sex ratio of helpers, but neither group size nor the proportion of nests with helpers influence helper effort. Our findings support the hypothesis that variation in helping behaviour among cooperatively breeding birds is consistent with Hamilton's rule, indicating a key role for kin selection in the evolution of cooperative investment in social birds

    Adults vary in their generosity in provisioning the young and their sensitivity to the need of the young. Do the young modulate their behaviour so as to specifically target more high-provisioning adults? This is especially likely in situations with mobile, nutritionally dependent young. We studied cooperatively breeding meerkats Suricata suricatta, in which pups beg to parents and other adults in the group. We found that the young begged differently when next to different adults and that they are consistent in how they beg when next to each adult. Pups next to adults that provision at high rates beg at higher rates and spend longer with them, and these adults are generally more sensitive to increases in begging rate. Such behaviour has adaptive benefits to offspring in terms of increased likelihood of being fed. However, offspring do not appear to be actively seeking out high-provisioning adults or increasing their begging behaviour when they encounter one. Pups did not appear to actively discriminate between adults in their association or begging behaviour. We suggest instead that the relationship between an adult’s relative contribution to pup feeding and the behaviour of its accompanying pup is driven by adult behaviour, with responsive adults that feed pups at a relatively higher rate preferentially associating with fast-begging hungry pups

    Indirect estimates of breeding and natal philopatry in an obligate avian brood parasite

    In theory, obligate brood parasitic birds are freed from several of the temporal and spatial constraints of parental care for dependent young. Yet, similar to parental bird species, adults in several avian brood parasites show a territorial spacing system while breeding, including site fidelity within and across years. Banding-based capture and sighting studies are also suggestive of non-parasite-like lower levels of natal philopatry in avian brood parasites. We analyzed the potential correlation of physical distance with genetic structure of a Brown-headed Cowbird Molothrus ater population, sampling parasitic chicks from nests across different temporal and spatial scales of its common host, the Eastern Phoebe Sayornis phoebe, near Ithaca, New York, USA. In support of extensive breeding but not historical patterns of natal philopatry, we detected no significant covariation of genetic similarity by distance of nestling parasites at the scale beyond that of individual host nest sites. These results contribute towards a baseline for future behavioral and genetic comparisons of whether and how parasitic versus parental reproductive strategies impact patterns of avian population genetic structure across space and time.Mark E.
