Predictors of breast self - examination among female teachers in Ethiopia using health belief model
Magnetism and its microscopic origin in iron-based high-temperature superconductors
High-temperature superconductivity in the iron-based materials emerges from,
or sometimes coexists with, their metallic or insulating parent compound
states. This is surprising since these undoped states display dramatically
different antiferromagnetic (AF) spin arrangements and Nel
temperatures. Although there is general consensus that magnetic interactions
are important for superconductivity, much is still unknown concerning the
microscopic origin of the magnetic states. In this review, progress in this
area is summarized, focusing on recent experimental and theoretical results and
discussing their microscopic implications. It is concluded that the parent
compounds are in a state that is more complex than implied by a simple Fermi
surface nesting scenario, and a dual description including both itinerant and
localized degrees of freedom is needed to properly describe these fascinating
materials.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, Review article, accepted for publication in

Prediction of breast self-examination in a sample of Iranian women: an application of the Health Belief Model

Abstract

Background

Iranian women, many of whom live in small cities, have limited access to mammography and clinical breast examinations. Thus, breast self examination (BSE) becomes an important and necessary approach to detecting this disease in its early stages in order to limit its resultant morbidity and mortality. This study examined constructs arising from the Health Belief Model as predictors of breast self examination behavior in a sample of women living in Bandar Abbas, Iran.

Methods

This study was conducted in eight health centers located in Bandar Abbas, Iran. The sample consisted of 240 eligible women who were selected from referrals to the centers. The inclusion criteria were as follows: aged 30 years and over; and able to read and write Farsi. Women with breast cancer, who were pregnant, or breast feeding, were excluded from the study. Data were collected by using a self administered questionnaire which included demographic characteristics and Champion's Health Belief Model Scale. This instrument measures the concepts of disease susceptibility (3 items), seriousness (6 items), benefits (4 items), barriers (8 items) and self-efficacy (10 items).

Results

The subjects' mean age was 37.2 (SD = 6.1) years. Just under a third of the subjects (31.7%) had performed BSE in the past and 7.1% of them performed it at least monthly. Perceived benefits and perceived self-efficacy of the women who performed BSE were significantly higher compared with women who did not practice BSE (p < 0.03). Furthermore, perceived barriers were lower among those who had performed BSE (p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis indicated that women who perceived fewer barriers (OR: 0.70, 95% CI: 0.63-0.77, p < 0.001) and had higher self-efficacy (OR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.02-1.13, p = 0.003) were more likely to perform BSE (R2 = 0.52).

Conclusion

Findings from this study indicated that perceived barriers and perceived self-efficacy could be predictors of BSE behavior among the sample of women. Therefore, BSE training programs that emphasize self-efficacy and address perceived barriers are recommended.</p

Deliberate self-harm and attachment: mediating and moderating roles of depression, anxiety, social support and interpersonal problems among Pakistani school going adolescents
Introduction: In Pakistan there is dearth of research on deliberate self-harm (DSH) and
its predictors among adolescents. While the lack of research in Pakistan can be partly
attributed to the sacrilegious status, criminalization and stigmatization attached to DSH, it
is also an attribute of paucity of Urdu versions of the standardized psychological
instruments. Previous research in developed countries has indicated that attachment theory
can be used as a useful framework to understand the development of austere
psychopathologies like DSH, as well as for studying pathways of interaction of
interpersonal and intrapersonal factors of psychopathologies. In this study, standardized
psychological instruments are translated into Urdu language as a first step. These
instruments are then used to study pathways of interaction of interpersonal and
intrapersonal factors of DSH, conceptualized within attachment framework.
Method: The study was conducted in two steps. In step 1, Youth Health Risk Behavior
Survey (YHRB), Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-32 (IIP-32) and Significant Others
Scale (SOS), were translated into Urdu language. Along with these scales, Urdu translated
versions of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Adolescent Relationship
Scales Questionnaire (ARSQ), Life Events scale (LES) from CASE questionnaire and
Family Affluence Scale-II (FAS-II) were reviewed for accuracy of translation through
expert judgement and psychometric evaluation. Secondly, a cross sectional survey was
conducted with 1290 adolescents (10 - 19 years age) using the translated Urdu versions of
the instruments and demographic pro forma. Structural equation modelling was used to
study the pathways of associations between predictors of DSH.
Results: The extensive process of translation resulted in establishment of semantic,
content, technical and construct equivalence of the translated instruments with the original
English versions. Multiple imputation was performed to account for missing values in
SPSS 20. Important structural adaptations were made in the scales based on factor analyses
conducted in M plus. After modifications, all scales showed satisfactory CFI (≥ 0.90) and
RMSEA (≤ 0.06). Results of the survey indicated that the prevalence of DSH (with, without
and ambivalent suicidal intentions) was 7%. Two SEM models were constructed involving
both mediation and moderation pathways. Results of Model 1 showed association of
attachment with DSH was double mediated by social support, depression and anxiety.
Model 2 also confirmed association of attachment with DSH with double mediation
through relationship style problems, depression and anxiety. In order to understand the
contextual picture of the concepts studied in this research both SEM models were also
constructed by controlling for demographic factors. This resulted in confirming age,
gender and family affluence as significant contributors but with very small effects.
Discussion and conclusion: In the present study translation of the instruments helped in
building a reservoir for future research. The results of translation and validation of
instruments indicated that cultural differences, language needs and age must be accounted
for while using standardized psychological instruments. Taking into consideration specific
cultural and demographic background of Pakistan, this study also confirms the key role of
attachment in influencing interaction of predictors of DSH. It is suggested that
intrapersonal and interpersonal factors are influential points of intervention for designing
clinical, school and community based awareness and prevention programs for DSH. The
thesis also discusses the implications for policy guidelines along with recommendations
for future research and other applications of the study
The impact of "health promotion program" on health perception and healthy life style applied to a group of adolescent students
Purpose: This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of health education on adolescents' healthy lifestyle and health perceptions given an adolescent group. Materials and methods: The study's universe constitutes a total of 234 students attending the 9th grade of a high school. The study was constructed according to the single-group pre-test, quasi-experimental research model, in the 9th class in a high school. Data collection form, Adolescent lifestyle scale(ALS) and health perception scale were applied to the adolescents as a pre-test during the first phase of the study. The adolescents who were below the median score of ALS were accepted as the risk group and taken to the experimental group. Adolescents in the experimental group received a 6-week "Health Promotion Program" and a final test was given to the adolescents at the end of the training sessions. Descriptive statistics, Paired-t-test, independent-, and correlation were used in the evaluation of the data. Results: ALS total score was 94.52±9.53 before adolescents' health promotion education and 104.05±15.4 after education. The relationship between them was statistically significant(p<0.05). It was determined that the health perception of adolescents included in the study decreased after post-training total scores compared to the pre-training scores and that this relationship was statistically significant(p<0.05). Conclusion: Public health nurses may be recommended to develop healthy lifestyle behaviours by raising healthy adolescents by providing more adolescent education through school health services

Mental health, loneliness, and illness perception outcomes in quality of life among young breast cancer patients after mastectomy: the role of breast reconstruction
Το explore the relationship between mental health (depression, anxiety, and stress), loneliness, and illness perception with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in young breast cancer patients, within a year after mastectomy, and to investigate the role of breast reconstruction. Eighty-one women with stage II breast cancer-35 with breast reconstruction and 46 without breast reconstruction-completed the Missoula-VITAS Quality of Life Index-15, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 21, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, and a questionnaire with demographic and medical information. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 20. Breast reconstruction was a significant predictor of total HRQoL and its domains. Women with breast reconstruction had better HRQoL, significantly better mental health, less stress and anxiety levels but experienced more physical discomfort and perceived higher level of physical distress compared to the ones without breast reconstruction. On the contrary, patients without breast reconstruction had higher level of loneliness, which was found to be correlated with poor HRQoL and higher levels of anxiety. Negative illness perceptions were associated with poor HRQoL for both groups. Breast reconstruction is not a panacea for patients in improving HRQoL
