An Analysis on Syntactic and Semantic Factors Found in Newspaper Headlines

As a type of media text, newspaper has an important role in human\u27s life because it presents various local, national and International information and events. In order to attract readers\u27 attention, journalists make the headlines as ambiguous and confusing as possible so that readers are curious to know the content of the whole story and they would read it. Moreover, in presenting the information or events, different reporters will have different linguistic choices which include the choice of words and expressions and different linguistic structures. Thus, this paper analyzes how the different linguistic choices and structures used in the headlines of The Jakarta Post and Indonesian Daily News would construct different linguistic representations of events in the world

Turn-taking Irregularities by African American Characters in the Movie "Why Do Fools Fall in Love"

This research dealt with the kinds of turn-taking irregularities in the conversation among the four main African American characters in the movie "Why Do Fools Fall in Love", the reasons of those kinds of turn-taking irregularities, and which reason occurred the most frequently. This research was descriptive qualitative. The findings showed that the four African American characters in the movie tended to overlap others because they wanted to clarify, reject, or complete others\u27 utterance, and show annoyance

THE TYPES OF COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES USED BY SPEAKING CLASS STUDENTS WITH DIFFERENT COMMUNICATION APPREHENSION LEVELS IN ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF PETRA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY, SURABAYA

This article reports on a study that aims to find out the types of Communication Strategies used and mostly used by students with high and low levels of Communication Apprehension and whether students with high level of Communication Apprehension used more numbers of Communication Strategies. The subjects in a created classroom were asked to retell a pictorial story and a pictorial instruction. The results showed that students with high Communication Apprehension level used more numbers of Communication Strategies

This study is aimed to reveal the type of compliments and the compliment responses produced by the main female character that is superior and on the responses produced by the main male character that is subordinate in the movie What Women Want. Finally, the research came up with the result that social status and gender did not always influence the way the main female superior character gave compliments toward the main male subordinate character and vice versa
