Outcome of renal grafts after simultaneous kidney/ pancreas transplantation
Nineteen patients with endstage renal failure due to Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus received simultaneous pancreas/kidney transplants using bladder drainage technique. Another group of 25 Type 1 diabetic patients received pancreas/kidney transplants by the duct occlusion technique. We observed a higher incidence of rejection episodes in the patients of the bladder drainage group than those in the duct occlusion group, 14 of 19 patients (74%) vs 7 of 25 (28%) respectively. Anti CD3 antibodies (Orthoclone, OKT3) as a part of induction treatment was used more often in the bladder drainage group (58%) than in the control group (20%)
Upper Limits on the Extragalactic Background Light from the Gamma-Ray Spectra of Blazars
The direct measurement of the extragalactic background light (EBL) is
difficult at optical to infrared wavelengths because of the strong foreground
radiation originating in the Solar System. Very high energy (VHE, E100 GeV)
gamma rays interact with EBL photons of these wavelengths through pair
production. In this work, the available VHE spectra from six blazars are used
to place upper limits on the EBL. These blazars have been detected over a range
of redshifts and a steepening of the spectral index is observed with increasing
source distance. This can be interpreted as absorption by the EBL. In general,
knowledge of the intrinsic source spectrum is necessary to determine the
density of the intervening EBL. Motivated by the observed spectral steepening
with redshift, upper limits on the EBL are derived by assuming that the
intrinsic spectra of the six blazars are . Upper limits are
then placed on the EBL flux at discrete energies without assuming a specific
spectral shape for the EBL. This is an advantage over other methods since the

Using cartographies to map time and space in teacher learning in and outside school
This article explores the relations between teachers' visual cartographies and oral narratives to better understand the spatial and temporal relations on teacher learning. It builds on a research project whose main questions were: 1) How and where do secondary school teachers learn to teach? 2) What are the consequences of this learning in their pedagogical relations and their students' learning processes and results? Since narrative research has been a common way of approaching the subject and have led to an emphasis on learning as a journey across contexts and over time, some of its contributions to explore teachers' learning paths are theoretically discussed, and visual methods, particularly cartographies, are also examined. Furthermore, the article presents the analysis of cartographies and video recordings of 29 secondary school teachers focusing on the interactions in different spaces and moments in time described by them. Findings suggest that learning to be a teacher may happen in interactions with objects, people and spaces beyond the boundaries of school, university and formal places of training and learning. They also show that the rhizomatic character of the cartographies may not prevent teleological thinking or the idea that any kind of learning is purposeful. Finally, this paper concludes that teachers' learning does not fit the representational frame that distinguishes between formal contents and leisure activities, classrooms and private spaces, lessons and bodies, emotions and knowledge
Photoinduced ordering and anchoring properties of azo-dye films
We study both theoretically and experimentally anchoring properties of
photoaligning azo-dye films in contact with a nematic liquid crystal depending
on photoinduced ordering of azo-dye molecules. In the mean field approximation,
we found that the bare surface anchoring energy linearly depends on the azo-dye
order parameter and the azimuthal anchoring strength decays to zero in the
limit of vanishing photoinduced ordering. From the absorption dichroism spectra
measured in the azo-dye films that are prepared from the azo-dye derivative
with polymerizable terminal groups (SDA-2) we obtain dependence of the dichroic
ratio on the irradiation dose. We also measure the polar and azimuthal
anchoring strengths in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cells aligned by the
azo-dye films and derive the anchoring strengths as functions of the dichroic
ratio. Though linear fitting of the experimental data for both anchoring
strengths gives reasonably well results, it, in contradiction with the theory,
predicts vanishing of the azimuthal anchoring strength at certain nonzero value
of the azo-dye order parameter. By using a simple phenomenological model we
show that this discrepancy can be attributed to the difference between the
surface and bulk order parameters in the films.Comment: revtex4, 25 pages, 9 figure
The new small-angle neutron scattering instrument SANS-1 at MLZ—characterization and first results
AbstractA thorough characterization of the key features of the new small-angle neutron scattering instrument SANS-1 at MLZ, a joint project of Technische Universität München and Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht, is presented. Measurements of the neutron beam profile, divergency and flux are given for various positions along the instrument including the sample position, and agree well with Monte Carlo simulations of SANS-1 using the program McStas. Secondly, the polarization option of SANS-1 is characterized for a broad wavelength band. A key feature of SANS-1 is the large accessible Q-range facilitated by the sideways movement of the detector. Particular attention is hence paid to the effects that arise due to large scattering angles on the detector where a standard cos3 solid angle correction is no longer applicable. Finally the performance of the instrument is characterized by a set of standard samples

Associations between bacterial infections and blood pressure in pregnancy
OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that bacterial infections in pregnancy are related to maternal blood pressure. STUDY DESIGN: Bacterial infection was assessed using antibiotic usage as a surrogate and its association with blood pressure in pregnancy tested in the Cambridge Baby Growth Study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Antibiotic usage in pregnancy was self-reported in questionnaires. Blood pressure measurements at four time points in pregnancy were collected from the hospital notes of 622 women. RESULTS: Using all the available blood pressure readings (adjusted for weeks gestation) antibiotic usage was associated with a higher mean arterial blood pressure across pregnancy: antibiotics used 85 (84, 87) mmHg vs. no antibiotics used 83 (83, 84) mmHg (β = 2.3 (0.6, 4.0) mmHg, p = 9.6 × 10−3, from 621 individuals). Further analysis revealed that antibiotic usage was associated with diastolic (β = 2.3 (0.6, 4.0) mmHg; p = 7.0 × 10−3) more than systolic blood pressure (β = 1.4 (−0.9, 3.7) mmHg; p = 0.2). The effect size associated with antibiotic usage appeared to rise slightly after the first trimester. CONCLUSIONS: Bacterial infection in pregnancy, as assessed by self-reported antibiotic usage, is associated with small rises in blood pressure.Funding for this study has come from the Evelyn Trust (EW9035322), Diabetes UK (11/0004241) and the Wellbeing of Women (the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, UK) (RG1644). The FIRST Bright Quasar Survey. II. 60 Nights and 1200 Spectra Later
We have used the VLA FIRST survey and the APM catalog of the POSS-I plates as
the basis for constructing a new radio-selected sample of optically bright
quasars. This is the first radio-selected sample that is competitive in size
with current optically selected quasar surveys. Using only two basic criteria,
radio-optical positional coincidence and optical morphology, quasars and BL
Lacs can be identified with 60% selection efficiency; the efficiency increases
to 70% for objects fainter than magnitude 17. We show that a more sophisticated
selection scheme can predict with better than 85% reliability which candidates
will turn out to be quasars.
This paper presents the second installment of the FIRST Bright Quasar Survey
with a catalog of 636 quasars distributed over 2682 square degrees. The quasar
sample is characterized and all spectra are displayed. The FBQS detects both
radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars out to a redshift z>3. We find a large
population of objects of intermediate radio-loudness; there is no evidence in
our sample for a bimodal distribution of radio characteristics. The sample
includes ~29 broad absorption line quasars, both high and low ionization, and a
number of new objects with remarkable optical spectra.Comment: 41 pages plus 39 gifs which contain all quasar spectra. Accepted for

Anomalous relaxation and self-organization in non-equilibrium processes
We study thermal relaxation in ordered arrays of coupled nonlinear elements
with external driving. We find, that our model exhibits dynamic
self-organization manifested in a universal stretched-exponential form of
relaxation. We identify two types of self-organization, cooperative and
anti-cooperative, which lead to fast and slow relaxation, respectively. We give
a qualitative explanation for the behavior of the stretched exponent in
different parameter ranges. We emphasize that this is a system exhibiting
stretched-exponential relaxation without explicit disorder or frustration.Comment: submitted to PR
