One of the modern technologies for improving the quality of student learning is mentoring - the involvement of senior students in curatorial work. The article presents an analysis of a survey conducted among the 2nd year students of the pediatric faculty of the Ural state medical university (UGMU), whose goal was to study the need for such mentoring.

STM and RHEED study of the Si(001)-c(8x8) surface

The Si(001) surface deoxidized by short annealing at T~925C in the ultrahigh vacuum molecular beam epitaxy chamber has been in situ investigated by high resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and reflected high energy electron diffraction (RHEED). RHEED patterns corresponding to (2x1) and (4x4) structures were observed during sample treatment. The (4x4) reconstruction arose at T<600C after annealing. The reconstruction was observed to be reversible: the (4x4) structure turned into the (2x1) one at T>600C, the (4x4) structure appeared again at recurring cooling. The c(8x8) reconstruction was revealed by STM at room temperature on the same samples. A fraction of the surface area covered by the c(8x8) structure decreased as the sample cooling rate was reduced. The (2x1) structure was observed on the surface free of the c(8x8) one. The c(8x8) structure has been evidenced to manifest itself as the (4x4) one in the RHEED patterns. A model of the c(8x8) structure formation has been built on the basis of the STM data. Origin of the high-order structure on the Si(001) surface and its connection with the epinucleation phenomenon are discussed.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figure

Thermal effects of carbonated hydroxyapatite modified by glycine and albumin

In this work calcium phosphate powders were obtained by precipitation method from simulated solutions of synovial fluid containing glycine and albumin. X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy determined that all samples are single-phase and are presented by carbonate containing hydroxyapatite (CHA). The thermograms of solid phases of CHA were obtained and analyzed; five stages of transformation in the temperature range of 25-1000°C were marked. It is shown that in this temperature range dehydration, decarboxylation and thermal degradation of amino acid and protein connected to the surface of solid phase occur. The tendency of temperature lowering of the decomposition of powders synthesized from a medium containing organic substances was determined. Results demonstrate a direct dependence between the concentration of the amino acid in a model solution and its content in the solid phase

Right heart condition in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia

Aim. To assess right heart condition in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia.Material and methods. One hundred and five patients with COVID-19 pneumonia were divided into 3 groups depending on the involvement of lung parenchyma: group I — 0-25%, II — 25-50%, III — 50-75%. The clinical status of patients was assessed using the NEWS2 and SHOKS-COVID scales. A complete blood count and biochemical blood tests were performed to determine the level of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and troponin I. Echocardiography was performed to assess the right heart structural, hemodynamic and functional parameters.Results. In patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, with an increase in lung parenchyma involvement, the intensity of systemic inflammatory response increased: C-reactive protein, group I — (4 [1,9; 35] mg/l), in III — (70,5 [33; 144] mg/l) (pI-III=0,012); myocardial stress marker level increased: NT-proBNP, group I — 77 [48; 150] ng/l, group III — 165 [100; 287] ng/l (pI-III=0,047). The dependence of NT-proBNP on C-reactive protein level was revealed (r=0,335, p=0,03). Intergroup comparison did not reveal significant differences between the main right heart functional parameters: TAPSE, Tei index (PW and TDI), FAC of the right ventricle (RV) (p>0,05). However, differences in the tricuspid annular peaks were found as follows: group I — 0,14 [0,12; 0,14] m/s, group II — 0,14 [0,12; 0,15] m/s, group III — 0,16 [0,14; 0,17] m/s (pI-II=0,012, pI-III=0,014) and RV global longitudinal strain: group I — 19,63±7,72%, group III — 27,4±5,93% (pI-III=0,014). The relationship between the RV global longitudinal strain and SHOKS-COVID score was confirmed (r=0,381; p=0,024).Conclusion. Patients with COVID-19 pneumonia showed no signs of right heart dysfunction. The development of RV hyperfunction was noted. Most likely, this is a compensatory mechanism in response to acute RV afterload. NT-proBNP increase under conditions of an inflammatory response may indicate myocardial stress. The results obtained allow to expand our understanding of the right heart condition in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia
