A critical analysis of the hydrino model
Recently, spectroscopic and calorimetric observations of hydrogen plasmas and
chemical reactions with them have been interpreted as evidence for the
existence of electronic states of the hydrogen atom with a binding energy of
more than 13.6 eV. The theoretical basis for such states, that have been dubbed
hydrinos, is investigated. We discuss both, the novel deterministic model of
the hydrogen atom, in which the existence of hydrinos was predicted, and
standard quantum mechanics. Severe inconsistencies in the deterministic model
are pointed out and the incompatibility of hydrino states with quantum

Deep learning with convolutional neural networks for decoding and visualization of EEG pathology
We apply convolutional neural networks (ConvNets) to the task of
distinguishing pathological from normal EEG recordings in the Temple University
Hospital EEG Abnormal Corpus. We use two basic, shallow and deep ConvNet
architectures recently shown to decode task-related information from EEG at
least as well as established algorithms designed for this purpose. In decoding
EEG pathology, both ConvNets reached substantially better accuracies (about 6%
better, ~85% vs. ~79%) than the only published result for this dataset, and
were still better when using only 1 minute of each recording for training and
only six seconds of each recording for testing. We used automated methods to
optimize architectural hyperparameters and found intriguingly different ConvNet
architectures, e.g., with max pooling as the only nonlinearity. Visualizations
of the ConvNet decoding behavior showed that they used spectral power changes
in the delta (0-4 Hz) and theta (4-8 Hz) frequency range, possibly alongside
other features, consistent with expectations derived from spectral analysis of
the EEG data and from the textual medical reports. Analysis of the textual
medical reports also highlighted the potential for accuracy increases by
integrating contextual information, such as the age of subjects. In summary,
the ConvNets and visualization techniques used in this study constitute a next
step towards clinically useful automated EEG diagnosis and establish a new

Distinguishing the associations between daily mortality and hospital admissions and nitrogen dioxide from those of particulate matter: a systematic review and meta‐analysis
Objectives To quantitatively assess time-series studies of daily nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and mortality and hospital admissions which also controlled for particulate matter (PM) to determine whether or to what extent the NO2 associations are independent of PM.
Design A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Methods Time-series studies—published in peer-reviewed journals worldwide, up to May 2011—that reported both single-pollutant and two-pollutant model estimates for NO2 and PM were ascertained from bibliographic databases (PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science) and reviews. Random-effects summary estimates were calculated globally and stratified by different geographical regions, and effect modification was investigated.
Outcome measures Mortality and hospital admissions for various cardiovascular or respiratory diseases in different age groups in the general population.
Results 60 eligible studies were identified, and meta-analysis was conducted on 23 outcomes. Two-pollutant model study estimates generally showed that the NO2 associations were independent of PM mass. For all-cause mortality, a 10 µg/m3 increase in 24-hour NO2 was associated with a 0.78% (95% CI 0.47% to 1.09%) increase in the risk of death, which reduced to 0.60% (0.33% to 0.87%) after control for PM. Heterogeneity between geographical region-specific estimates was removed by control for PM (I2 from 66.9% to 0%). Estimates of PM and daily mortality assembled from the same studies were greatly attenuated after control for NO2: from 0.51% (0.29% to 0.74%) to 0.18% (−0.11% to 0.47%) per 10 µg/m3 PM10 and 0.74% (0.34% to 1.14%) to 0.54% (−0.25% to 1.34%) for PM2.5.
Conclusions The association between short-term exposure to NO2 and adverse health outcomes is largely independent of PM mass. Further studies should attempt to investigate whether this is a generic PM effect or whether it is modified by the source and physicochemical characteristics of PM. This finding strengthens the argument for NO2 having a causal role in health effects
Identification of Genes Whose Expression Overlaps Age Boundaries and Correlates with Risk Groups in Paediatric and Adult Acute Myeloid Leukaemia
Few studies have compared gene expression in paediatric and adult acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). In this study, we have analysed mRNA-sequencing data from two publicly accessible databases: (1) National Cancer Institute's Therapeutically Applicable Research to Generate Effective Treatments (NCI-TARGET), examining paediatric patients, and (2) The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), examining adult patients with AML. With a particular focus on 144 known tumour antigens, we identified STEAP1, SAGE1, MORC4, SLC34A2 and CEACAM3 as significantly different in their expression between standard and low risk paediatric AML patient subgroups, as well as between poor and good, and intermediate and good risk adult AML patient subgroups. We found significant differences in event-free survival (EFS) in paediatric AML patients, when comparing standard and low risk subgroups, and quartile expression levels of BIRC5, MAGEF1, MELTF, STEAP1 and VGLL4. We found significant differences in EFS in adult AML patients when comparing intermediate and good, and poor and good risk adult AML patient subgroups and quartile expression levels of MORC4 and SAGE1, respectively. When examining Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) (2016) pathway data, we found that genes altered in AML were involved in key processes such as the evasion of apoptosis (BIRC5, WNT1) or the control of cell proliferation (SSX2IP, AML1-ETO). For the first time we have compared gene expression in paediatric AML patients with that of adult AML patients. This study provides unique insights into the differences and similarities in the gene expression that underlies AML, the genes that are significantly differently expressed between risk subgroups, and provides new insights into the molecular pathways involved in AML pathogenesis
Close-packed floating clusters: granular hydrodynamics beyond the freezing point?
Monodisperse granular flows often develop regions with hexagonal close
packing of particles. We investigate this effect in a system of inelastic hard
spheres driven from below by a "thermal" plate. Molecular dynamics simulations
show, in a wide range of parameters, a close-packed cluster supported by a
low-density region. Surprisingly, the steady-state density profile, including
the close-packed cluster part, is well described by a variant of Navier-Stokes
granular hydrodynamics (NSGH). We suggest a simple explanation for the success

Myocardial collagen deposition and inflammatory cell infiltration in cats with pre-clinical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
The histological features of feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) have been well documented, but there are no reports describing the histological features in mild pre-clinical disease, since cats are rarely screened for the disease in the early stages before clinical signs are apparent. Histological changes at the early stage of the disease in pre-clinical cats could contribute to an improved understanding of disease aetiology or progression. The aim of this study was to evaluate the histological features of HCM in the left ventricular (LV) myocardium of cats diagnosed with pre-clinical HCM. Theory of x-ray absorption by laser-aligned symmetric-top molecules
We devise a theory of x-ray absorption by symmetric-top molecules which are
aligned by an intense optical laser. Initially, the density matrix of the
system is composed of the electronic ground state of the molecules and a
thermal ensemble of rigid-rotor eigenstates. We formulate equations of motion
of the two-color (laser plus x rays) rotational-electronic problem. The
interaction with the laser is assumed to be nonresonant; it is described by an
electric dipole polarizability tensor. X-ray absorption is approximated as a
one-photon process. It is shown that the equations can be separated such that
the interaction with the laser can be treated independently of the x rays. The
laser-only density matrix is propagated numerically. After each time step, the
x-ray absorption is calculated. We apply our theory to study adiabatic
alignment of bromine molecules (Br2). The required dynamic polarizabilities are
determined using the ab initio linear response methods coupled-cluster singles
(CCS), second-order approximate coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CC2), and
coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD). For the description of x-ray
absorption on the sigma_g 1s --> sigma_u 4p resonance, a parameter-free
two-level model is used for the electronic structure of the molecules. Our

SUMSS: A Wide-Field Radio Imaging Survey of the Southern Sky. I. Science goals, survey design and instrumentation
The Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope, operating at 843 MHz with a 5
square degree field of view, is carrying out a radio imaging survey of the sky
south of declination -30 deg. This survey (the Sydney University Molonglo Sky
Survey, or SUMSS) produces images with a resolution of 43" x 43" cosec(Dec.)
and an rms noise level of about 1 mJy/beam. SUMSS is therefore similar in
sensitivity and resolution to the northern NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS; Condon et
al. 1998). The survey is progressing at a rate of about 1000 square degrees per
year, yielding individual and statistical data for many thousands of weak radio
sources. This paper describes the main characteristics of the survey, and

New targets for therapy: antigen identification in adults with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia
Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in adults is a rare and difficult-to-treat cancer that is characterised by excess lymphoblasts in the bone marrow. Although many patients achieve remission with chemotherapy, relapse rates are high and the associated impact on survival devastating. Most patients receive chemotherapy and for those whose overall fitness supports it, the most effective treatment to date is allogeneic stem cell transplant that can improve overall survival rates in part due to a ‘graft-versus-leukaemia’ effect. However, due to the rarity of this disease, and the availability of mature B-cell antigens on the cell surface, few new cancer antigens have been identified in adult B-ALL that could act as targets to remove residual disease in first remission or provide alternative targets for escape variants if and when current immunotherapy strategies fail. We have used RT-PCR analysis, literature searches, antibody-specific profiling and gene expression microarray analysis to identify and prioritise antigens as novel targets for the treatment of adult B-ALL
Nectar and flower production in Vicia faba L. (field bean) at ambient and elevated carbon dioxide
Atmospheric CO2 has been predicted to double by the year 2100. Elevated CO2 causes an increase in photosynthetic rate and extra assimilate is allocated to plant growth, seed and fruit production. Increased investment in flowers may have implications for pollination in entomophilous plants. Floral nectar standing crop, flower production and longevity were examined in Vicia faba, field bean, at ambient and elevated CO2. Nectar standing crop did not differ significantly between treatments but plants grown at elevated CO2 produced approximately 25% more flowers per plant and these lived 17% longer than those grown at ambient CO2. A plant grown at elevated CO2 may thus produce more nectar in total and, together with its increased floral display, may be more attractive to pollinators, but pollen flow will not necessarily be improved
