Tweed in Martensites: A Potential New Spin Glass
We've been studying the ``tweed'' precursors above the martensitic transition
in shape--memory alloys. These characteristic cross--hatched modulations occur
for hundreds of degrees above the first--order shape--changing transition. Our
two--dimensional model for this transition, in the limit of infinite elastic
anisotropy, can be mapped onto a spin--glass Hamiltonian in a random field. We
suggest that the tweed precursors are a direct analogy of the spin--glass
phase. The tweed is intermediate between the high--temperature cubic phase and
the low--temperature martensitic phase in the same way as the spin--glass phase
can be intermediate between ferromagnet and antiferromagnet.Comment: 18 pages and four figures (included
Broken-Bond Rule for the Surface Energies of Noble Metals
Using two different full-potential ab-initio techniques we introduce a
simple, universal rule based on the number of broken first-neighbor bonds to
determine the surface energies of the three noble metals Cu, Ag and Au. When a
bond is broken, the rearrangement of the electronic charge for these metals
does not lead to a change of the remaining bonds. Thus the energy needed to
break a bond is independent of the surface orientation. This novel finding can
lead to the development of simple models to describe the energetics of a
surface like step and kink formation, crystal growth, alloy formation,
equilibrium shape of mesoscopic crystallites and surface faceting.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Solar Neutrinos from CNO Electron Capture
The neutrino flux from the sun is predicted to have a CNO-cycle contribution
as well as the known pp-chain component. Previously, only the fluxes from beta+
decays of 13N, 15O, and 17F have been calculated in detail. Another neutrino
component that has not been widely considered is electron capture on these
nuclei. We calculate the number of interactions in several solar neutrino
detectors due to neutrinos from electron capture on 13N, 15O, and 17F, within
the context of the Standard Solar Model. We also discuss possible non-standard

f-Oscillators and Nonlinear Coherent States
The notion of f-oscillators generalizing q-oscillators is introduced. For
classical and quantum cases, an interpretation of the f-oscillator is provided
as corresponding to a special nonlinearity of vibration for which the frequency
of oscillation depends on the energy. The f-coherent states (nonlinear coherent
states) generalizing q-coherent states are constructed. Applied to quantum
optics, photon distribution function, photon number means, and dispersions are
calculated for the f-coherent states as well as the Wigner function and
Q-function. As an example, it is shown how this nonlinearity may affect the

The homotopy theory of simplicial props
The category of (colored) props is an enhancement of the category of colored
operads, and thus of the category of small categories. In this paper, the
second in a series on "higher props," we show that the category of all small
colored simplicial props admits a cofibrantly generated model category
structure. With this model structure, the forgetful functor from props to

Relationship Between Cerebral Oxygenation and Metabolism During Rewarming in Newborn Infants After Therapeutic Hypothermia Following Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury
Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has become a standard of care following hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). After TH, body temperature is brought back to 37 °C over 14 h. Lactate/N-acetylasperatate (Lac/NAA) peak area ratio on proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H MRS) is the best available outcome biomarker following HIE. We hypothesized that broadband near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) measured changes in the oxidation state of cytochrome-c-oxidase concentration (Δ[oxCCO]) and cerebral hemodynamics during rewarming would relate to Lac/NAA. Broadband NIRS and systemic data were collected during rewarming from 14 infants following HIE over a mean period of 12.5 h. (1)H MRS was performed on day 5-9. Heart rate increased by 20/min during rewarming while blood pressure and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) remained stable. The relationship between mitochondrial metabolism and oxygenation (measured as Δ[oxCCO] and Δ[HbD], respectively) was calculated by linear regression analysis. This was reviewed in three groups: Lac/NAA values 1. Mean regression coefficient (r (2)) values in these groups were 0.41 (±0.27), 0.22 (±0.21) and 0.01, respectively. The relationship between mitochondrial metabolism and oxygenation became impaired with rising Lac/NAA. Cardiovascular parameters remained stable during rewarming

Resonances of the cusp family
We study a family of chaotic maps with limit cases the tent map and the cusp
map (the cusp family). We discuss the spectral properties of the corresponding
Frobenius--Perron operator in different function spaces including spaces of
analytic functions. A numerical study of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions is

A Search for EUV Emission from Comets with the Cosmic Hot Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer (CHIPS)
We have obtained EUV spectra between 90 and 255 \AA of the cometsC/2002 T7
(LINEAR), C/2001 Q4 (NEAT), and C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) near their perihelion
passages in 2004 with the Cosmic Hot Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer (CHIPS).
We obtained contemporaneous data on Comet NEAT Q4 with the X-ray
Observatory ACIS instrument, marking the first simultaneous EUV and X-ray
spectral observations of a comet. The total CHIPS/EUV observing times were 337
ks for Q4, 234 ks for T7, and 483 ks for Machholz and for both CHIPS and
we calculate we have captured all the comet flux in the instrument
field of view. We set upper limits on solar wind charge exchange emission lines
of O, C, N, Ne and Fe occurring in the spectral bandpass of CHIPS. The spectrum
of Q4 obtained with can be reproduced by modeling emission lines of
C, N O, Mg, Fe, Si, S, and Ne solar wind ions. The measured X-ray emission line
intensities are consistent with our predictions from a solar wind charge
exchange model. The model predictions for the EUV emission line intensities are
determined from the intensity ratios of the cascading X-ray and EUV photons
arising in the charge exchange processes. They are compatible with the measured
limits on the intensities of the EUV lines. For comet Q4, we measured a total
X-ray flux of 3.7 ergs cm s, and derive from
model predictions a total EUV flux of 1.5 erg cm
s. The CHIPS observations occurred predominantly while the satellite was
on the dayside of Earth. For much of the observing time, CHIPS performed
observations at smaller solar angles than it was designed for and EUV emission
from the Sun scattered into the instrument limited the sensitivity of the EUV
