Planform selection in two-layer Benard-Marangoni convection
Benard-Marangoni convection in a system of two superimposed liquids is
investigated theoretically. Extending previous studies the complete
hydrodynamics of both layers is treated and buoyancy is consistently taken into
account. The planform selection problem between rolls, squares and hexagons is
investigated by explicitly calculating the coefficients of an appropriate
amplitude equation from the parameters of the fluids. The results are compared
with recent experiments on two-layer systems in which squares at onset have
been reported.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, oscillatory instability included, typos

Nonlinear convective flows in a two-layer system under the action of spatial temperature modulation of heat release/consumption at the interface
An influence of a spatial temperature modulation of the interfacial heat release/consumption on nonlinear convective flows in the 47v2 silicone oil - water system, is studied. Rigid heat-insulated lateral walls, corresponding to the case of closed cavities, have been considered. Transitions between the flows with different spatial structures, have been investigated. It is shown that the spatial modulation can change the sequence of bifurcations and lead to the appearance of specific steady and oscillatory flows in the system
Convective flows in a two-layer system with an interfacial heat release under the action of an imposed temperature gradient
The influence of an interfacial heat release on nonlinear convective regimes, developed under the action of an imposed temperature gradient in the 47v2 silicone oil - water system, has been studied. Rigid heat insulated lateral walls, corresponding to the case of closed cavities, have been considered. Transitions between the flows with different spatial structures, have been investigated. It is shown that the presence of an interfacial heat release can change the sequence of bifurcations and lead to the appearance of specific oscillatory regimes. (C) 2016 Elsevier Masson SAS. Nonlinear dynamics of a two-layer system under the action of spatial temperature modulation of an interfacial heat release
An influence of a spatial temperature modulation of the heat release/consumption at the interface on nonlinear convective flows in the 47v2 silicone oil-water system, has been investigated. Periodic boundary conditions on the lateral walls, corresponding to an infinite two-layer system, have been considered. Transitions between the flows with different spatial structures, have been studied. It is shown that the spatial modulation can change the sequence of bifurcations and lead to the appearance of new oscillatory regimes. Specifically, pulsating traveling waves changing the direction of propagation, as well as regimes corresponding to period doubling, period-four and period-eight bifurcations, have been obtained.
