Healthy early years settings: a scoping study
This briefing paper considers the diversity in early years provision. It was produced for the Healthy Early Years study, which was funded by the Department of Health, to help inform decisions about extending the Healthy Schools Programme approach to early years settings. The paper focuses on childcare and early education provision for children aged from birth to five years: maintained and private nursery schools, Sure Start local programmes, children's centres, day nurseries, pre-school playgroups and childminders. An overview of the relevant issues and of the distinguishing features of each type of setting is provided
Monitoring RXTE Observations of Markarian 348: the origin of the column density variations
We analyze 37 RXTE observations of the type 2 Seyfert galaxy Mrk348 obtained
during a period of 14 months. We confirm the spectral variability previous
reported by Smith et al., in the sense that thecolumn density decreases by a
factor of ~3 as the count rate increases. Column density variations could
possibly originate either due to the random drift of clouds within the
absorption screen, or due to photoionization processes. Our modeling of the
observed variations implies that the first scenario is more likely. These
clouds should lie in a distance of >2 light years from the source, having a
diameter of a few light days and a density of >10^7 cm^(-3), hence probably

Feedback Enhanced Sensitivity in Optomechanics: Surpassing the Parametric Instability Barrier
The intracavity power, and hence sensitivity, of optomechanical sensors is
commonly limited by parametric instability. Here we characterize the parametric
instability induced sensitivity degradation in a micron scale cavity
optomechanical system. Feedback via optomechanical transduction and electrical
gradient force actuation is applied to suppress the parametric instability. As
a result a 5.4 fold increase in mechanical motion transduction sensitivity is

Variation of Thermochromic Glazing Systems Transition Temperature, Hysteresis Gradient and Width Effect on Energy Efficiency
Due to increasing pressure to reduce the energy demand in buildings, thermochromic thin film based glazing has become a recognized potential solution due to the intrinsic ability to modulate the solar heat gain of a window as a function of the materials temperature. These “intelligent” glazings have been investigated for several years, and it has been found that, through variation of synthetic route, the thermochromic properties (transition temperature, hysteresis gradient and width) can be altered; however, less attention has been applied to how such alterations affect the overall energy savings attributed to the materials. In this study the building simulation software EnergyPlus TM has been used to model a series of idealized thermochromic spectra in a series of different environments to evaluate their energy saving potential against both clear glass systems and industry standards. The idealized spectra are used to see what effect each of the materials thermochromic properties and therefore elucidate which are the most important with respect to the energy saving properties. It was found that the best thermochromic materials were those with a narrow sharp hysteresis and a low transition temperature and result in an increase in energy saving between 30%–45% across the different environments compared to clear glass systems
The effect of transition hysteresis width in thermochromic glazing systems
Thermochromic glazing theoretically has the potential to lead to a large reduction in energy demand in modern buildings by allowing the transmission of visible light for day lighting whilst reducing unwanted solar gain during the cooling season, but allowing useful solar gain in the heating season. In this study building simulation is used to examine the effect of the thermochromic transition hysteresis width on the energy demand characteristics of a model system in a variety of climates. The results are also compared against current industry standard glazing products. The results suggest that in a warm climate with a low transition temperature and hysteresis width energy demand can be reduced by up to 54% compared to standard double glazing
Minimum requirements for feedback enhanced force sensing
The problem of estimating an unknown force driving a linear oscillator is
revisited. When using linear measurement, feedback is often cited as a
mechanism to enhance bandwidth or sensitivity. We show that as long as the
oscillator dynamics are known, there exists a real-time estimation strategy
that reproduces the same measurement record as any arbitrary feedback protocol.
Consequently some form of nonlinearity is required to gain any advantage beyond
estimation alone. This result holds true in both quantum and classical systems,
with non-stationary forces and feedback, and in the general case of
non-Gaussian and correlated noise. Recently, feedback enhanced incoherent force
sensing has been demonstrated [Nat. Nano. \textbf{7}, 509 (2012)], with the
enhancement attributed to a feedback induced modification of the mechanical
susceptibility. As a proof-of-principle we experimentally reproduce this result
