Apostropheâs Double
âApostropheâs Doubleâ is part of a larger research project studying the (often subliminal) strategies by which literary language writing controls its readership. Part I of the essay argues that the rhetorical trope âapostropheâ functions as one such interpellative apparatus that partitions our world and splits our practices. The tropeâs operational distinction between authorized speakers / readers vs. âdummyâ addressees / targets sets in motion a hierarchical and divisive logic that empowers some and disqualifies others. Part II argues that there is a second version (or âturnâ) of the figure of apostrophe that has been neglected altogether, one in which the âtargetâ responds not by turning to the interpellation but by turning away instead. This turn away is key to the poetics of certain strong women poets. Ingeborg Bachmannâs poem âAnrufung des groĂen BĂ€renâ (âInvocation of the Great Bearâ) provides a lucid model of the transition from one to the other. Apostrophe is thus double: one establishes the apparatus, the other deconstructs it. Part III contrasts two radically divergent uses of language corresponding to these turns: Bachmannâs âFrankfurt Lecturesâ enact the radical change towards which her poem leads us. Jonathan Cullerâs seminal article âApostropheâ exemplifies the relation to language Bachmann frees herself from. Two subject positions emerge in the wake of this double apostrophic, each with its own constraints: one is empowered by the apparatus yet must remain subservient to it. The other reclaims sovereignty as a living being from the apparatus, on the condition of radically unrepresentable
Interference of an array of independent Bose-Einstein condensates
We have observed high-contrast matter wave interference between 30
Bose-Einstein condensates with uncorrelated phases. Interference patterns were
observed after independent condensates were released from a one-dimensional
optical lattice and allowed to expand and overlap. This initially surprising
phenomenon is explained with a simple theoretical model which generalizes the
analysis of the interference of two independent condensates
Seeing zeros of random polynomials: quantized vortices in the ideal Bose gas
We propose a physical system allowing one to experimentally observe the
distribution of the complex zeros of a random polynomial. We consider a
degenerate, rotating, quasi-ideal atomic Bose gas prepared in the lowest Landau
level. Thermal fluctuations provide the randomness of the bosonic field and of
the locations of the vortex cores. These vortices can be mapped to zeros of
random polynomials, and observed in the density profile of the gas.Comment: 4 page
A minimal model for short-time diffusion in periodic potentials
We investigate the dynamics of a single, overdamped colloidal particle, which
is driven by a constant force through a one-dimensional periodic potential. We
focus on systems with large barrier heights where the lowest-order cumulants of
the density field, that is, average position and the mean-squared displacement,
show nontrivial (non-diffusive) short-time behavior characterized by the
appearance of plateaus. We demonstrate that this "cage-like" dynamics can be
well described by a discretized master equation model involving two states
(related to two positions) within each potential valley. Non-trivial
predictions of our approach include analytic expressions for the plateau
heights and an estimate of the "de-caging time" obtained from the study of
deviations from Gaussian behaviour. The simplicity of our approach means that
it offers a minimal model to describe the short-time behavior of systems with
hindered dynamics.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
On the Transit Potential of the Planet Orbiting iota Draconis
Most of the known transiting exoplanets are in short-period orbits, largely
due to the bias inherent in detecting planets through the transit technique.
However, the eccentricity distribution of the known radial velocity planets
results in many of those planets having a non-negligible transit probability.
One such case is the massive planet orbiting the giant star iota Draconis, a
situation where both the orientation of the planet's eccentric orbit and the
size of the host star inflate the transit probability to a much higher value
than for a typical hot Jupiter. Here we present a revised fit of the radial
velocity data with new measurements and a photometric analysis of the stellar
variability. We provide a revised transit probability, an improved transit
ephemeris, and discuss the prospects for observing a transit of this planet
from both the ground and space.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ. Radial
velocities will be made available in the on-line version and through the NASA
Star and Exoplanet Database (NStED). Minor corrections from ApJ proof have
been applie
The Minimal Length and Large Extra Dimensions
Planck scale physics represents a future challenge, located between particle
physics and general relativity. The Planck scale marks a threshold beyond which
the old description of spacetime breaks down and conceptually new phenomena
must appear. Little is known about the fundamental theory valid at Planckian
energies, except that it necessarily seems to imply the occurrence of a minimal
length scale, providing a natural ultraviolet cutoff and a limit to the
possible resolution of spacetime.
Motivated by String Theory, the models of large extra dimensions lower the
Planck scale to values soon accessible. These models predict a vast number of
quantum gravity effects at the lowered Planck scale, among them the production
of TeV-mass black holes and gravitons. Within the extra dimensional scenario,
also the minimal length comes into the reach of experiment and sets a
fundamental limit to short distance physics.
We review the status of Planck scale physics in these effective models.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, brief review to appear in Mod. Phys. Let.
Half-Metallic Ferromagnetism in the Heusler Compound CoFeSi revealed by Resistivity, Magnetoresistance, and Anomalous Hall Effect measurements
We present electrical transport data for single-crystalline CoFeSi which
provide clear-cut evidence that this Heusler compound is truly a half-metallic
ferromagnet, i.e. it possesses perfect spin-polarization. More specifically,
the temperature dependence of is governed by electron scattering off
magnons which are thermally excited over a sizeable gap
() separating the electronic majority states at the Fermi level
from the unoccupied minority states. As a consequence, electron-magnon
scattering is only relevant at but freezes out at lower
temperatures, i.e., the spin-polarization of the electrons at the Fermi level
remains practically perfect for . The gapped magnon population
has a decisive influence on the magnetoresistance and the anomalous Hall effect
(AHE): i) The magnetoresistance changes its sign at , ii) the
anomalous Hall coefficient is strongly temperature dependent at and compatible with Berry phase related and/or side-jump electronic
deflection, whereas it is practically temperature-independent at lower
temperatures
