    EXECUTIVE PAY AND PERFORMANCE IN PORTUGUESE LISTED COMPANIES

    This essay analyses the relationship between corporate governance practices and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) wages from a sample of Portuguese listed companies over the period from 2002-2011. The relationship between CEO total compensation and shareholders return, firm characteristics, CEO characteristics, board of directors and shareholders characteristics is analysed. It is found that firm specific factors accounts for the majority of the variance in total CEO pay, while firm performance accounts for less than 5%. It is also found that the CEO characteristics, board of directors’ structures, and shareholders features are related with the CEO pay. The policy implications of these results are then derived

    In Vivo Dynamics of Type 1 Fimbria Regulation in Uropathogenic Escherichia coli during Experimental Urinary Tract Infection

    Escherichia coli is the primary cause of uncomplicated infections of the urinary tract including cystitis. More serious infections, characterized as acute pyelonephritis, can also develop. Type 1 fimbriae of E. coli contribute to virulence in the urinary tract; however, only recently has the expression of the type 1 fimbriae been investigated in vivo using molecular techniques. Transcription of type 1 fimbrial genes is controlled by a promoter that resides on a 314-bp invertible element capable of two orientations. One places the promoter in the ON orientation, allowing for transcription; the other places the promoter in the OFF orientation, preventing transcription. A PCR-based assay was developed to measure the orientation of the invertible element during an experimental urinary tract infection in mice. Using this assay, it was found that the percentage of the population ON in urine samples correlated with the respective CFU per gram of bladder (P = 0.0006) but not with CFU per gram of kidney (P > 0.069). Cystitis isolates present in the urine of mice during the course of infection had a higher percentage of their invertible elements in the ON orientation than did pyelonephritis isolates (85 and 34%, respectively, at 24 h; P < 0.0001). In general, cystitis isolates, unlike pyelonephritis isolates, were more likely to maintain their invertible elements in the ON orientation for the entire period of infection. E. coli cells expressing type 1 fimbriae, expelled in urine, were shown by scanning electron microscopy to be densely packed on the surface of uroepithelial cells. These results suggest that expression of type 1 fimbriae is more critical for cystitis strains than for pyelonephritis strains in the early stages of an infection during bladder colonization

    Cardiovascular responses to cold and submaximal exercise in patients with coronary artery disease

    Regular year-round exercise is recommended for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the combined effects of cold and moderate sustained exercise, both known to increase cardiac workload, on cardiovascular responses are not known. We tested the hypothesis that cardiac workload is increased, and evidence of ischemia would be observed during exercise in the cold in patients with CAD. Sixteen men (59.3 +/- 7.0 yr, means +/- SD) with stable CAD each underwent 4, 30 min exposures in a randomized order: seated rest and moderate-intensity exercise [walking, 60%-70% of max heart rate (HR)] performed at +22 degrees C and -15 degrees C. Systolic brachial blood pressure (SBP), HR, electrocardiogram (ECG), and skin temperatures were recorded throughout the intervention. Rate pressure product (RPP) and ECG parameters were obtained. The combined effects of cold and submaximal exercise were additive for SBP and RPP and synergistic for HR when compared with rest in a neutral environment. RPP (mmHg.beats/min) was 17% higher during exercise in the cold (18,080 +/- 3540) compared with neutral (15,490 +/- 2,940) conditions (P = 0.001). Only a few ST depressions were detected during exercise but without an effect of ambient temperature. The corrected QT interval increased while exercising in the cold compared with neutral temperature (P = 0.023). Recovery of postexercise blood pressure was similar regardless of temperature. Whole body exposure to cold during submaximal exercise results in higher cardiac workload compared with a neutral environment. Despite the higher RPP, no signs of myocardial ischemia or abnormal ECG responses were observed. The results of this study are useful for planning year-round exercise-based rehabilitation programs for stable CAD patients.</p

    Establishment of a Persistent Escherichia coli Reservoir during the Acute Phase of a Bladder Infection

    The vast majority of urinary tract infections are caused by strains of uropathogenic Escherichia coli that encode filamentous adhesive organelles called type 1 pili. These structures mediate both bacterial attachment to and invasion of bladder epithelial cells. However, the mechanism by which type 1 pilus-mediated bacterial invasion contributes to the pathogenesis of a urinary tract infection is unknown. Here we show that type 1-piliated uropathogens can invade the superficial epithelial cells that line the lumenal surface of the bladder and subsequently replicate, forming massive foci of intracellular E. coli termed bacterial factories. In response to infection, superficial bladder cells exfoliate and are removed with the flow of urine. To avoid clearance by exfoliation, intracellular uropathogens can reemerge and eventually establish a persistent, quiescent bacterial reservoir within the bladder mucosa that may serve as a source for recurrent acute infections. These observations suggest that urinary tract infections are more chronic and invasive than generally assumed
