    Germans in Germany's Ethnic Neighborhoods

    Get PDF
In contrast to most research on the effects on residents of living in an ethnic neighborhood, this paper explores how living within an ethnic neighborhood affects members of the dominant ethnic group - in this case Germans - rather than the minorities that define it. The results indicate that Germans living within ethnic neighborhoods are less well off financially than their peers in other parts of the city, and are more likely to be living in large buildings in need of repair. The analysis did not however suggest that Germans living in ethnic neighborhoods have fewer social contacts, or that they are more likely to be unemployed. Indeed, Germans living within ethnic neighborhoods reported levels of satisfaction with their housing and standard of living equal to Germans elsewhere. These results would seem to paint a rosy picture of the lives of German residents of ethnic neighborhoods, were it not for a notable absence of school-aged German children within these spaces.

Due to the Motto of STKIP Siliwangi Bandung “ The Leader of Learning Innovation”, this research deals with The Analysis of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) used in Learning Practice of Translating and Interpreting. This research explores the implementation of Students\u27 Team Achievement Divisions (STAD) and find out the advantages and disadvantages of Students\u27 Team Achievement Divisions (STAD) used in learning Practice of Translating and Interpreting. The objective of the research was to motivate students and encourage them to be active in learning, to accelerate student achievement, to improve behavior in learning, and to find out the students\u27 ability with Student Teams-Achievement Divisions (STAD) method. Data collection technique focused on participant observation, interviews, and documentation. Student Team-Achievement Division (STAD) is one type of cooperative learning model using small groups with a number of members of each group of 4-5 students in heterogenic way. It begins by delivering the objectives of learning, delivering of material, group activities, quizzes and group rewards. Students\u27 Team Achievement Divisions (STAD) method also is an effective method of cooperative learning. As with other learning methods, STAD method also has advantages and disadvantages. In the learning process there are good interaction among students, good attitude, increased interpersonal skills. It\u27s effective in increasing student participation and can train students to be more focus, more concentrate in answering questions from the teacher. It can make students eager to learn. But if the chief of the group can not resolve conflicts that arise constructively, it will be less effective in a group work. And if the number of groups is not considered, that is less than four, it would tend to withdraw and less active during the discussion. And if the number of groups of more than five, then chances for them to be passive in task completio

Partial (13)C isotopic enrichment of nucleoside monophosphates: useful reporters for NMR structural studies

Analysis of the (13)C isotopic labeling patterns of nucleoside monophosphates (NMPs) extracted from Escherichia coli grown in a mixture of C-1 and C-2 glucose is presented. By comparing our results to previous observations on amino acids grown in similar media, we have been able to rationalize the labeling pattern based on the well-known biochemistry of nucleotide biosynthesis. Except for a few notable absences of label (C4 in purines and C3′ in ribose) and one highly enriched site (C1′ in ribose), most carbons are randomly enriched at a low level (an average of 13%). These sparsely labeled NMPs give less complex NMR spectra than their fully isotopically labeled analogs due to the elimination of most (13)C–(13)C scalar couplings. The spectral simplicity is particularly advantageous when working in ordered systems, as illustrated with guanosine diphosphate (GDP) bound to ADP ribosylation factor 1 (ARF1) aligned in a liquid crystalline medium. In this system, the absence of scalar couplings and additional long-range dipolar couplings significantly enhances signal to noise and resolution

Gaining Access to Housing in Germany: The Foreign Minority Experience

    Get PDF
Housing is a critical component of household well being and the extent to which minority households have achieved parity with Germans is a measure of the extent to which this population is integrated into the larger German society. Specifically we examine whether the housing conditions for immigrants2 has improved between 1985 and 1998 despite the greater barriers to upward mobility for low skill workers arising from industrial restructuring. We use regression models to determine the degree to which socioeconomic differences between the two populations account for variations in the average quality of their housing. Finally, given the low number of vacancies in the German housing market and the disadvantaged position of minorities within it, we are interested in measuring the magnitude of the improvements persons of foreign origin are able to make through residential mobility. Our descriptive analyses reveal that although housing conditions for minorities have improved in absolute terms across a wide array of indicators, only in a few instances has the housing quality gap between Germans and persons of foreign origin narrowed. Further, we find that the housing conditions of minorities remained poorer even after controlling for variables thought to be strong predictors of housing quality (income, age, family size etc..) Finally, persons of foreign origin are becoming increasingly likely to move into the large, often geographically and socially isolated apartment complexes built in the post World War II era.

Synaptic metaplasticity underlies tetanic potentiation in Lymnaea: a novel paradigm

    Get PDF
We present a mathematical model which explains and interprets a novel form of short-term potentiation, which was found to be use-, but not time-dependent, in experiments done on Lymnaea neurons. The high degree of potentiation is explained using a model of synaptic metaplasticity, while the use-dependence (which is critically reliant on the presence of kinase in the experiment) is explained using a model of a stochastic and bistable biological switch.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, to appear in PLoS One (2013

Mathematics is considered a scourge for students to grow when students are dealing with anxiety. The study of anxiety has become one of the important factors to be studied. This study was to determine the relationship between math anxiety and influence the ability of mathematical connections. The data were processed using the method of multiple regression-correlation using math anxiety questionnaire instrument is divided into three criteria mathematics anxiety, test the ability to connect mathematical description of the form of matter. The analysis showed a negative relationship between math anxiety with mathematical connection capabilities. Regression coefficient indicates a negative influence between mathematics anxiety with mathematical connection ability students. Keywords : mathematical connection ability students, math anxiet
