    PhaseAug: A Differentiable Augmentation for Speech Synthesis to Simulate One-to-Many Mapping

    Previous generative adversarial network (GAN)-based neural vocoders are trained to reconstruct the exact ground truth waveform from the paired mel-spectrogram and do not consider the one-to-many relationship of speech synthesis. This conventional training causes overfitting for both the discriminators and the generator, leading to the periodicity artifacts in the generated audio signal. In this work, we present PhaseAug, the first differentiable augmentation for speech synthesis that rotates the phase of each frequency bin to simulate one-to-many mapping. With our proposed method, we outperform baselines without any architecture modification.     Self-selective ferroelectric memory realized with semimetalic graphene channel

    A new concept of read-out method for ferroelectric random-access memory (FeRAM) using a graphene layer as the channel material of bottom-gated field effect transistor structure is demonstrated experimentally. The transconductance of the graphene channel is found to change its sign depending on the direction of spontaneous polarization (SP) in the underlying ferroelectric layer. This indicates that the memory state of FeRAM, specified by the SP direction of the ferroelectric layer, can be sensed unambiguously with transconductance measurements. With the proposed read-out method, it is possible to construct an array of ferroelectric memory cells in the form of a cross-point structure where the transconductance of a crossing cell can be measured selectively without any additional selector. This type of FeRAM can be a plausible solution for fabricating high speed, ultra-low power, long lifetime, and high density 3D stackable non-volatile memory

    Importance Analysis of Decision Making Factors for Selecting International Freight Transportation Mode

    Currently, the competition among carriers in the international freight service industry is getting fierce. In particular, the LCC (Low Cost Carriers) in Korea secured the licenses for international freight delivery service. However, due to the high costs, most shippers prefer car ferry services over air transportation, even though the service level of air transportation is considerably better. The present paper investigates how the LCCs, as compared to car ferry services, secure the competitive advantage in the international transportation service as compared to car ferry services. We have focused on the factors shippers regard as the most important for selecting transportation mode. For a reasonable comparison, we have limited the business area to the north eastern Asian countries, including Korea, China, Japan, and Russia. We have developed a questionnaire for the shippers who export their own product in these countries from Korea. Based on the results of fuzzy-AHP, it can be concluded that the factors related to the reliability and convenience are regarded as the important factors for selecting the transportation mode. Furthermore, the results of this study can be used by LCCs to develop their own strategies for competing with car ferry services.     Analysis of the Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes, Requirement of Insulin Treatment, and Diabetes-Related Complications among Patients with Cancer

    This retrospective nationwide population-based cohort study used a dataset collected from the Korean National Health Insurance Service. We evaluated incident type 2 diabetes, insulin requirements, and diabetes-associated complications during a 10-year follow-up period using the log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards regression models. In total, 8114 and 16,228 individuals with and without cancer, respectively, were enrolled. We found a higher incidence rate and an increased adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for new cases of type 2 diabetes in patients with cancer, compared with those without cancer. Additionally, patients with cancer had a higher risk of insulin requirement than patients without cancer (adjusted HR 1.43, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.14–1.78). Although there was no significant association between diabetes-associated complications and overall cancer diagnosis, specific cancer types (pancreas, bladder, and prostate) showed an increased risk of subsequent diabetic nephropathy. Therefore, clinicians should closely monitor patients with cancer for the early detection of type 2 diabetes and related morbidities

    Relationship of Depression, Anxiety, and Bipolar Disease with Burning Mouth Syndrome: A Nationwide Cohort Study

    Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic, painful condition of the oral mucosa. Although the pathogenesis remains unclear, psychological and neuroendocrine factors are considered the major contributors. Few longitudinal studies have investigated the effects of psychological factors on the occurrence of BMS. Therefore, we evaluated the risk of BMS in patients with affective disorders using a nationwide population-based cohort dataset. We identified patients with depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder and then selected comparison participants using the 1:4 propensity score-matching method. We investigated the incidence of BMS events during the follow-up period using survival analysis, the log-rank test, and Cox proportional hazards regression models. After adjusting for other contributing conditions, the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for developing BMS was 3.37 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.67–6.80) for depression and 5.09 (95% CI: 2.19–11.80) for anxiety; however, bipolar disorder showed no significant risk. Specifically, female patients with depression and anxiety had an increased risk of BMS. Moreover, patients with anxiety showed an increased adjusted HR of BMS events during the first 4 years after diagnosis, whereas patients with depression did not. In conclusion, depression and anxiety disorders are significantly associated with the risk of BMS. Additionally, female patients showed a significantly higher risk of BMS than male patients, and anxiety showed increased BMS events earlier than depression. Therefore, clinicians should consider the risk of BMS when treating patients with depression or anxiety

    Identification of Pathogenic Bacteria from Public Libraries via Proteomics Analysis

    Hazardous organisms may thrive on surfaces that are often exposed to human contact, including children’s library books. In this study, swab samples were taken from 42 children’s books collected from four public libraries in Texas and California. Samples were then cultivated in brain–heart infusion (BHI) medium and then in Luria broth (LB) medium containing either ampicillin or kanamycin. All 42 samples (100%) were positive for bacterial growth in normal BHI medium. Furthermore, 35 samples (83.3%) and 20 samples (47.6%) in total were positive in LB medium containing ampicillin or kanamycin, respectively. Bacterial populations were then identified in samples using an Orbitrap Fusion™ Tribrid ™ mass spectrometer, a state-of-the-art proteomic analysis tool. Identified bacterial species grown in ampicillin included Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Serratia, Streptococcus, Escherichia, Salmonella, and Enterococcus. In contrast, identified bacteria grown in kanamycin included Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, and Bacillus. The presences of pathogenic bacteria species were also confirmed. The results of this study warrant follow up studies to assess the potential health risks of identified pathogens. This study demonstrates the utility of proteomics in identifying environmental pathogenic bacteria for specific public health risk evaluations
