Experimental Study on Fire Resistance Performance of a Hollow Slab Using a Lightweight Hollow Sphere

    Get PDF
This study evaluates the fire resistance performance (1–2h) of a reinforced concrete (RC) structure-void slab using a lightweight hollow sphere, which can reduce the unnecessary dynamic of removing the central concrete. For this experiment, we set up the depth of the concrete cover, live load, and span length as the factors. The result comes out with 50 mm cover depth of the RC structure hollow slab secured. It was shown that 120 minutes of fire resistance performance can be secured regardless of the length of the structure and loading. Among these factors, the resisting capability changes more sensitively with the live load rather than the thickness of cover. The shorter span in length could assure better fire resistance performance

Experimental Study on the Fire Resistance Performance of Prestressed Composite Beam with Corrugated Web under Standard Fire with Loading Condition

In this study, fire resistance tests were performed on a conventional slim floor beam and a prestressed composite beam with corrugated webs, which is suitable for a long-span structure with a reduction in story height by utilizing the prestress and accordion effect. In the fire test program, the ISO 834 standard fire curve was adopted. Key test variables were the effect of prestress, shape of corrugated webs, and thickness of sprayed fireproofing material. All of the test specimens demonstrated enhanced fire resistance performance exceeding the expected performance level. The prestressed composite beams with corrugated webs especially showed excellent fire performance, considering these specimens had thin fireproofing thickness compared to the conventional slim floor specimen

Quasi-Eigenstate Evolution in Open Chaotic Billiards

We experimentally studied evolution of quasi-eigenmodes as classical dynamics undergoing a transition from being regular to chaotic in open quantum billiards. In a deformation-variable microcavity we traced all high-Q cavity modes in a wide range of frequency as the cavity deformation increased. By employing an internal parameter we were able to obtain a mode-dynamics diagram at a given deformation, showing avoided crossings between different mode groups, and could directly observe the coupling strengths induced by ray chaos among encountering modes. We also show that the observed mode-dynamics diagrams reflect the underlying classical ray dynamics in the phase space.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Development of deformation-tunable quadrupolar microcavity

We have developed a technique for realizing a two-dimensional quadrupolar microcavity with its deformation variable from 0% to 20% continuously. We employed a microjet ejected from a noncircular orifice in order to generate a stationary column with modulated quadrupolar deformation in its cross section. Wavelength red shifts of low-order cavity modes due to shape deformation were measured and were found to be in good agreement with the wave calculation for the same deformation, indicating the observed deformation is quadrupolar in nature.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, intended for Rev. Characterization of GDP-mannose Pyrophosphorylase from Escherichia Coli O157:H7 EDL933 and Its Broad Substrate Specificity

GDP-mannose pyrophosphorylase gene (ManC) of Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157 was cloned and expressed as a highly soluble protein in E. coli BL21 (DE3). The enzyme was subsequently purified using hydrophobic and ion exchange chromatographies. ManC showed very broad substrate specificities for four nucleotides and various hexose-1-phosphates, yielding ADP-mannose, CDP-mannose, UDP-mannose, GDP-mannose, GDP-glucose and GDP-2-deoxy-glucose

Chaos-assisted nonresonant optical pumping of quadrupole-deformed microlasers

Efficient nonresonant optical pumping of a high-Q scar mode in a two-dimensional quadrupole-deformed microlaser has been demonstrated based on ray and wave chaos. Three-fold enhancement in the lasing power was achieved at a properly chosen pumping angle. The experimental result is consistent with ray tracing and wave overlap integral calculations.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure

Orbital Variations of Biogenic CaCO3 and Opal Abundance in the Western and Central Equatorial Pacific Ocean During the Late Quaternary

Biogenic CaCO3 and opal abundances were measured in two piston cores (PC313 and PC5101) collected, respectively, along the equator in the western and central Pacific Ocean. The age model for core PC313, which extends to about 750 ka, was developed by comparing the oxygen isotope stratigraphy of planktonic foraminifera (N. dutetrei) to the SPECMAP stack. The age model for core PC5101, which extends to about 600 ka, was developed by stratigraphic correlation of CaCO3 contents to those in the well-dated core RC11-210 (Chuey et al. 1987). Both cores distinctly exhibited a series of CaCO3 and opal variations, which are mainly controlled by the orbital eccentricity cycle of about 100-kyr. The orbital-scale cyclic variations of CaCO3 and opal contents appear to be contrasting in both cores such that high CaCO3 and low opal contents occurred during the glacial periods. In contrast, during the interglacial periods, low CaCO3 and high opal contents occurred. Mostly remarkable is the distinct occurrence of a mid-Bruhnes event (MBE) at around 350 ka. The CaCO3 content was higher in core PC5101 than in core PC313 before the MBE, whereas biogenic opal abundance became higher in core PC5101 after the MBE. Such a characteristic discrepancy of biogenic (CaCO3 and opal) production, i.e., a succession of primary producers from coccolithophore to diatom, between cores PC313 and PC5101 may be attributed to the prevailing dominant hydrographic conditions (i.e., the South Equatorial Current), in the path of which both cores are located. The intensity of westward propagation might have been an important factor in contrasting biogenic production centering around the MBE
