    Monitoring Coastal Chlorophyll-a Concentrations in Coastal Areas Using Machine Learning Models

    Harmful algal blooms have negatively affected the aquaculture industry and aquatic ecosystems globally. Remote sensing using satellite sensor systems has been applied on large spatial scales with high temporal resolutions for effective monitoring of harmful algal blooms in coastal waters. However, oceanic color satellites have limitations, such as low spatial resolution of sensor systems and the optical complexity of coastal waters. In this study, bands 1 to 4, obtained from Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager satellite images, were used to evaluate the performance of empirical ocean chlorophyll algorithms using machine learning techniques. Artificial neural network and support vector machine techniques were used to develop an optimal chlorophyll-a model. Four-band, four-band-ratio, and mixed reflectance datasets were tested to select the appropriate input dataset for estimating chlorophyll-a concentration using the two machine learning models. While the ocean chlorophyll algorithm application on Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager showed relatively low performance, the machine learning methods showed improved performance during both the training and validation steps. The artificial neural network and support vector machine demonstrated a similar level of prediction accuracy. Overall, the support vector machine showed slightly superior performance to that of the artificial neural network during the validation step.     Mutagenic activity of river water from a river near textile industrial complex in Korea

    The mutagenic activity of XAD-2 adsorbates and water extracts recovered from nine locations of the Kumho River was tested on S. typhimurium TA98 strain to identify the source of the mutagenicity. A sampling site, receiving effluents from the textile industrial complex located in Daegu City, showed extraordinarily high mutagenic activity, especially in the presence of S9 mixture, at all sampling time in both XAD-2 adsorbates and dichloromethane extracts. This indicated the existence of the frame-shift mutagens in the Kumho River, same type of mutagens detected in previous studies by other researchers in the Nakdong River into which the Kumho River discharges. The fractionation study showed that the mutagenic chemicals in the river water are mid-polar. Furthermore, mean tail length obtained by single cell gel electrophoresis assay (Comet assay) showed consistent dose-dependent DNA damage, indicating that the chemicals in the river water not only act as frame-shift mutagens but also break human lymphocytes DNA strain.     Artemisinin-Daumone Hybrid Inhibits Cancer Cell-Mediated Osteolysis by Targeting Cancer Cells and Osteoclasts

    Background/Aims: Bone metastasis of cancer cells decreases patient survival and quality of life. Hybridization via the covalent coupling of two bioactive natural products is a useful strategy for developing more potent anticancer agents by enhancing their bioavailability and avoiding drug resistance. Methods: The in vivo activities of artemisinin-daumone hybrid 15 (ARTD) were estimated in cancer cell-inoculated mice and ovariectomized mice. The viability, migration, and invasion of cancer cells were measured via MTT, wound-healing, and transwell invasion assays. ARTD-regulated transcription factors were detected with an RT2 profiler PCR array kit and Western blotting. Osteoclastogenesis and osteoclast activity were detected with tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining, a pit formation assay, gelatin zymography, and a cathepsin K ELISA assay. Results: ARTD blocked cancer-associated osteolysis more potently than artemisinin in mice with intratibially inoculated breast cancer or lung cancer cells. ARTD inhibited the viability, migration, and invasion of breast and lung cancer cells in the absence or presence of transforming growth factor-ÎČ1. ARTD treatment induced the expression of tumor suppressive activating transcription factor 3 and inhibited oncogenic E2F transcription factor 1 expression at the mRNA and protein levels. ARTD inhibited receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand-induced osteoclast formation and bone resorbing activity by reducing the secreted levels of matrix metalloproteinase-9 and cathepsin K. Furthermore, ARTD prevented estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss in ovariectomized mice. Conclusion: ARTD may be a promising candidate for inhibiting cancer-induced bone destruction. The application of ARTD may be extended to patients with chemotherapy-induced ovarian failure or postmenopausal osteoporosis

    Regional Disparities in Major Cancer Incidence in Korea, 1999–2018

    OBJECTIVES: This study investigated regional disparities in the incidence of 8 major cancers at the municipal level in Korea during 1999-2018 and evaluated the presence or absence of hot spots of cancer clusters during 2014-2018. METHODS: The Korea National Cancer Incidence Database was used. Age-standardized incidence rates were calculated by gender and region at the municipal level for 4 periods of 5 years and 8 cancer types. Regional disparities were calculated as both absolute and relative measures. The possibility of clusters was examined using global Moran\u27s I with a spatial weight matrix based on adjacency or distance. RESULTS: Regional disparities varied depending on cancer type and gender during the 20-year study period. For men, the regional disparities of stomach, colon and rectum, lung, and liver cancer declined, and those of thyroid and prostate cancer recently decreased, despite an overall increasing incidence. For women, regional disparities in stomach, colon and rectum, lung, liver, and cervical cancer declined, that of thyroid cancer recently decreased, despite an overall increasing incidence, and that of breast cancer steadily increased. In 2014-2018, breast cancer (I, 0.61; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.53 to 0.70) showed a high probability of cancer clusters in women, and liver cancer (I, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.40 to 0.56) showed a high probability of cancer clusters in men. CONCLUSIONS: Disparities in cancer incidence that were not seen at the national level were discovered at the municipal level. These results could provide important directions for planning and implementing local cancer policies

    Frequency Locking in Spatially Extended Systems

    A variant of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation is used to investigate the frequency locking phenomena in spatially extended systems. With appropriate parameter values, a variety of frequency-locked patterns including flats, π\pi fronts, labyrinths and 2π/32\pi/3 fronts emerge. We show that in spatially extended systems, frequency locking can be enhanced or suppressed by diffusive coupling. Novel patterns such as chaotically bursting domains and target patterns are also observed during the transition to locking
