    Drastic fall-off of the thermal conductivity for disordered lattices in the limit of weak anharmonic interactions

    We study the thermal conductivity, at fixed positive temperature, of a disordered lattice of harmonic oscillators, weakly coupled to each other through anharmonic potentials. The interaction is controlled by a small parameter ϵ>0\epsilon > 0. We rigorously show, in two slightly different setups, that the conductivity has a non-perturbative origin. This means that it decays to zero faster than any polynomial in ϵ\epsilon as ϵ0\epsilon\rightarrow 0. It is then argued that this result extends to a disordered chain studied by Dhar and Lebowitz, and to a classical spins chain recently investigated by Oganesyan, Pal and Huse.Comment: 21 page

    Energy transport through rare collisions

    We study a one-dimensional hamiltonian chain of masses perturbed by an energy conserving noise. The dynamics is such that, according to its hamiltonian part, particles move freely in cells and interact with their neighbors through collisions, made possible by a small overlap of size ϵ>0\epsilon > 0 between near cells. The noise only randomly flips the velocity of the particles. If ϵ0\epsilon \rightarrow 0, and if time is rescaled by a factor 1/ϵ1/{\epsilon}, we show that energy evolves autonomously according to a stochastic equation, which hydrodynamic limit is known in some cases. In particular, if only two different energies are present, the limiting process coincides with the simple symmetric exclusion process.Comment: 24 pages, 2 figure

    Binding of soluble fibronectin to integrin α5ß1 - link to focal adhesion redistribution and contractile shape

    Focal adhesions are randomly distributed across the ventral surface or along the edge of epithelial cells. In fibroblasts they orient centripetally and concentrate at a few peripheral sites connecting long F-actin stress fibers, causing a typical elongated, contractile morphology. Extensive remodeling of adhesions in fibroblasts also takes part in fibronectin fibrillogenesis, a process that depends on Rho-mediated contractility and results in the formation of a fibronectin matrix. Our current study shows that all these fibroblast characteristics are controlled by the ability of integrin alpha 5 beta 1 to bind soluble fibronectin molecules in their compact inactive conformation. The hypervariable region of the ligand-binding I-like domain of integrin alpha 5 beta 1 supports binding of soluble fibronectin. This supports the distribution of centripetally orientated focal adhesions in distinct peripheral sites, Rho activation and fibronectin fibrillogenesis through a mechanism that does not depend on Syndecan-4. Integrin alpha v beta 3, even when locked in high affinity conformations for the RGD recognition motif shows no appreciable binding of soluble fibronectin and, consequently, fails to support the typical fibroblast focal adhesion distribution, Rho activity and fibronectin fibrillogenesis in the absence of integrin alpha 5 beta 1. The ability of alpha 5 beta 1 integrin to interact with soluble fibronectin may thus drive the cell-matrix adhesion and cytoskeletal organization required for a contractile, fibroblast-like morphology, perhaps explaining why alpha 5 beta 1 integrin, similarly to fibronectin, is essential for development.Toxicolog

    How Close is too Close? The Effect of a Non-Lethal Electric Shark Deterrent on White Shark Behaviour

Personal shark deterrents are being marketed as the solution to mitigate the threat that sharks pose. However, the effectiveness claims of many personal deterrents are based on our knowledge of shark sensory biology rather than robust testing of the devices themselves, as most have not been subjected to independent scientific studies. Therefore, there is a clear need for thorough testing of commercially available shark deterrents to provide the public with recommendations of their effectiveness. Using a modified stereo-camera system, we quantified behavioural interactions between white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) and a baited target in the presence of a commercially available, personal electric shark deterrent (Shark Shield Freedom7™). The stereo-camera system enabled an accurate assessment of the behavioural responses of C. carcharias when encountering a non-lethal electric field many times stronger than what they would naturally experience. Upon their first observed encounter, all C. carcharias were repelled at a mean (± std. error) proximity of 131 (± 10.3) cm, which corresponded to a mean voltage gradient of 9.7 (± 0.9) V/m. With each subsequent encounter, their proximity decreased by an average of 11.6 cm, which corresponded to an increase in tolerance to the electric field by an average of 2.6 (± 0.5) V/m per encounter. Despite the increase in tolerance, sharks continued to be deterred from interacting for the duration of each trial when in the presence of an active Shark Shield™. Furthermore, the findings provide no support to the theory that electric deterrents attract sharks. The results of this study provide quantitative evidence of the effectiveness of a non-lethal electric shark deterrent, its influence on the behaviour of C. carcharias, and an accurate method for testing other shark deterrent technologies

    Effective treatment of edema and endothelial barrier dysfunction with imatinib

    Background-Tissue edema and endothelial barrier dysfunction as observed in sepsis and acute lung injury carry high morbidity and mortality, but currently lack specific therapy. In a recent case report, we described fast resolution of pulmonary edema on treatment with the tyrosine kinase inhibitor imatinib through an unknown mechanism. Here, we explored the effect of imatinib on endothelial barrier dysfunction and edema formation. Methods and Results-We evaluated the effect of imatinib on endothelial barrier function in vitro and in vivo. In human macro- and microvascular endothelial monolayers, imatinib attenuated endothelial barrier dysfunction induced by thrombin and histamine. Small interfering RNA knock-downs of the imatinib-sensitive kinases revealed that imatinib attenuates endothelial barrier dysfunction via inhibition of Abl-related gene kinase (Arg/Abl2), a previously unknown mediator of endothelial barrier dysf Conclusions-Thus, imatinib prevents endothelial barrier dysfunction and edema formation via inhibition of Arg.     Thermal conductivity in harmonic lattices with random collisions

    We review recent rigorous mathematical results about the macroscopic behaviour of harmonic chains with the dynamics perturbed by a random exchange of velocities between nearest neighbor particles. The random exchange models the effects of nonlinearities of anharmonic chains and the resulting dynamics have similar macroscopic behaviour. In particular there is a superdiffusion of energy for unpinned acoustic chains. The corresponding evolution of the temperature profile is governed by a fractional heat equation.
