Metal-catalyst-free growth of carbon nanotubes and their application in field-effect transistors
The metal-catalyst-free growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using chemical vapor deposition and the application in field-effect transistors (FETs) is demonstrated. The CNT growth process used a 3-nm-thick Ge layer on SiO2 that was subsequently annealed to produce Ge nanoparticles. Raman measurements show the presence of radial breathing mode peaks and the absence of the disorder induced D-band, indicating single walled CNTs with a low defect density. The synthesized CNTs are used to fabricate CNTFETs and the best device has a state-of-the-art on/off current ratio of 3×108 and a steep sub-threshold slope of 110 mV/dec
Tuning the Kondo effect with a mechanically controllable break junction
We study electron transport through C60 molecules in the Kondo regime using a
mechanically controllable break junction. By varying the electrode spacing, we
are able to change both the width and height of the Kondo resonance, indicating
modification of the Kondo temperature and the relative strength of coupling to
the two electrodes. The linear conductance as a function of T/T_K agrees with
the scaling function expected for the spin-1/2 Kondo problem. We are also able
to tune finite-bias Kondo features which appear at the energy of the first C60
intracage vibrational mode.Comment: 4 pages with 4 figure
Electrically-detected magnetic resonance in ion-implanted Si:P nanostructures
We present the results of electrically-detected magnetic resonance (EDMR)
experiments on silicon with ion-implanted phosphorus nanostructures, performed
at 5 K. The devices consist of high-dose implanted metallic leads with a square
gap, into which Phosphorus is implanted at a non-metallic dose corresponding to
10^17 cm^-3. By restricting this secondary implant to a 100 nm x 100 nm region,
the EDMR signal from less than 100 donors is detected. This technique provides
a pathway to the study of single donor spins in semiconductors, which is
relevant to a number of proposals for quantum information processing.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Agency as the Acquisition of Capital: the role of one-on-one tutoring and mentoring in changing a refugee student's educational trajectory
Current research into the experiences of refugee students in mainstream secondary schools in Australia indicates that for these students, schools are places of social and academic isolation and failure. This article introduces one such student, Lian, who came to Australia as a refugee from Burma, and whom the author tutored and mentored intensively during his final year of schooling. The article provides an empirically derived understanding of how one-on-one tutoring and mentoring became a platform through which this student was able to succeed in a structure which systematically tried to exclude him. Here, agency is conceptualised in terms of Bourdieu's concept of capital. The analysis highlights the ways in which one-on-one tutoring and mentoring provided the necessary platform by which this refugee student was able to acquire the necessary capital that effected a positive change in his educational trajectory
