The availability, extent and quality of sustainability reporting by Malaysian listed firms: subsequent to mandatory disclosure

The purpose of this study is to examine the availability, extent and quality of Sustainability Reporting (SR) by Malaysian firms subsequent to the mandatory disclosure.Based on an across industry sample of 300 firms in 2011, the results indicate that despite the mandatory disclosure, 3% of the sampled firms failed to make such reporting.Furthermore, in both aspects of extent and quality, human-related sustainability engagement, which consists of the workplace and community themes are found to be the favorite themes to be reported.Meanwhile, firms in the infrastructure, finance and plantation industries perform the best of extent and quality of SR, while firms in hotel industry marks the poorest in quality and lowest in extent of SR

Understanding the share ownership of institutional investors in Malaysia

The vast amount of assets owned by institutional investors has significantly altered the ownership structure of organizations.The purpose of this study is to explore the share ownership by institutional investors among firms listed on Bursa Malaysia.The sample consists of 330 firms as listed in 2011, and the share ownership of institutional investors is measured by the percentage of ownership held by the institutional investors in the annual report.The results reveal that more than two-third of the firms under study has share ownership by institutional investors. The largest share ownership is by the unit trusts and mutual funds institutions.Furthermore, by separate institutions, the government-managed unit trust fund, namely the Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and the ‘Pilgrims Fund’ or the Lembaga Tabung Haji (LTH) hold the highest percentage of share ownership, followed by the government-managed pension fund, namely the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).When institutions are classified according to their investment behavior, dedicated institutions mark a higher level of ownership compared to transient institutions. Moreover, government-managed institutions significantly dominate the market for institutional shareholdings

TAHAP AMALAN MASYARAKAT TERHADAP TANAH ADAT DAN UNDANG-UNDANG TANAH ADAT: KAJIAN DI NEGERI SEMBILAN

Tanah adat dan undang-undang tanah adat merupakan salah satu ciri utama dalam pewarisan harta mengikut adat perpatih yang memberikan amanah kepada kaum perempuan untuk mewarisi tanah adat. Namun, timbul persoalan tentang tahap pengamalan masyarakat terhadap undang-undang ini pada hari ini dan isu-isu yang timbul sepanjang perlaksanaan undang-undang tersebut. Justeru, objektif kajian ini adalah untuk mengenal pasti tahap amalan masyarakat di Negeri Sembilan terhadap tanah adat dan undang-undang tanah adat serta isu-isu yang berkaitan dengannya. Kajian kuantitatif ini menggunakan kaedah survei yang melibatkan 525 orang sampel berdasarkan teknik prosedur pensampelan rawak mudah. Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa tahap amalan masyarakat di Negeri Sembilan terhadap tanah adat dan undang-undang tanah adat masih lagi tinggi. Namun, terdapat beberapa isu yang timbul di sepanjang perlaksanaan undang-undang ini. Masalah yang timbul berpunca sama ada di pihak pejabat tanah mahupun pengamal tanah adat itu sendiri. Implikasi kajian ini ialah dapat meningkatkan kesedaran masyarakat terhadap tahap amalan dan isu-isu yang timbul berkaitan tanah adat dan undang-undang tanah adat. Kajian lanjutan boleh dilakukan untuk mengenal pasti kaedah yang terbaik untuk menangani masalah-masalah yang timbul agar amalan tanah adat dan undang-undang tanah adat boleh dilaksanakan dalam suasana yang lebih harmoni
