    Design and characterization of zeolite membranes for fluid separation

    Experimental and theoretical methods have been used to study zeolite structures, properties and applications as membranes for separation purposes. Thin layers of silicalite-1 and Na-LTA zeolites have been synthesised onto carbon-graphite supports using a hydrothermal synthesis procedure. The separation behaviour of the composite membranes was characterized by gas permeation studies of pure, binary and ternary mixtures of methane, ethane and propane. The influence of temperature and feed gas mixture composition on the separation and selectivity performance of the membranes was also investigated. It was found that the silicalite-1 composite membranes synthesised onto the 4 hour oxidized carbon-graphite supports showed the most promising separation behaviour of all the composite membranes investigated. Molecular simulation methods were used to gain an understanding of how hydrocarbon molecules behave both within the pores and on the surfaces of silicalite-1, mordenite and LTA zeolites. Molecular dynamic simulations were used to investigate the influence of temperature and molecular loadings on the diffusional behaviour of hydrocarbons in zeolites. Both hydroxylated (surface termination with hydroxyl groups) and non-hydroxylated silicalite-1 and Na-mordenite surfaces were generated. For both zeolites the most stable surfaces correspond to the {010} surface. For the silicalite-1 {010} surface the adsorption of hydrocarbons and molecular water onto the hydroxylated surface showed a favourable exothermic adsorption process compared to adsorption on the non-hydroxylated surface. With the Na-mordenite {010} surface the adsorption of hydrocarbons onto both the hydroxylated and non-hydroxylated surfaces had a combination of favourable and non-favourable adsorption energies, while the adsorption of molecular water onto both types of surface was found to be a favourable adsorption process

    Effects of Zn on the grain boundary properties of La2-xSrxCu1-yZnyO4 superconductors

    The properties of the grain boundaries (GBs) are of significant importance in high-Tc cuprates. Most large scale applications of cuprate superconductors involve usage of sintered compounds. The critical current density and the ability to trap high magnetic flux inside the sample depend largely on the quality of the GBs. Zn has the ability to pin vortices but it also degrades superconductivity. In this study we have investigated the effect of Zn impurity on the intergrain coupling properties in high-quality La2-xSrxCu1-yZnyO4 sintered samples with different hole concentrations, p (\equiv x), over a wide range of Zn contents (y) using field-dependent ac susceptibility (ACS) measurements. The ACS results enabled us to determine the superconducting transition temperature Tc, and the temperature Tgcp, at which the randomly oriented superconducting grains become coupled as a function of hole and disorder contents. We have analyzed the behavior of the GBs from the systematic evolution of the values of Tgcp(p, y), Tc(p, y), and from the contribution to the field-dependent ACS signal coming from the intergrain shielding current. Zn suppresses both Tc and Tgcp in a similar fashion. The hole content and the carrier localization due to Zn substitution seem to have significant effect on the coupling properties of the GBs. We have discussed the possible implications of these findings in detail in this article.     Some novel imine derivatives (1-14) of a broad spectrum antibiotic amoxicillin were prepared by condensation with different carbonyl compounds. The amoxicillin imine derivatives were characterized using elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques such as FT-IR and 1H NMR. The prepared imine derivatives were evaluated for antimicrobial activities against some pathogens using disc diffusion method. The results of present studies demonstrate enhanced antimicrobial activity of the novel imine derivatives of amoxicillin as compared to the parent drug

    A histological study of the spermatogenesis in Ompok pabda (Hamilton-Buchanan 1822)

    The present study deals with the histological analysis of testicular development in Ompok pabda. For the study, male gonads were collected month wise from January to September at Freshwater Station, BFRI, Mymensingh. From the analysis, 4 stages of sperm formation, namely, spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa, were distinguished. The percent distribution of spermatozoa was highest in July (about 92%). Maximum GSI value was 1.129±0.271 found in July. By analyzing the histology of spermatogenesis it was established that this species breeds once in a year

    Seed production and culture techniques of climbing perch, Anabas testudineus

    Six treatments each with 12 replications designed to optimize the dose of inducing agent PG to achieve fertilization and hatching success of climbing perch, Anabas testudineus were tested. The females were given single injection of 7-12 mg PG/kg body weight and the males were given 4 mg PG/kg body weight. Fertilization and hatching rate varied from 67±4.55% to 66±3.0% and 59±4.88% to 57±6.21% for the doses of 10, 11 and 12 mg PG/kg of body weight, respectively. The hormone dose had significant (P<0.05) effect on fertilization and hatching. Six mini shallow cisterns (570 cm x 105 cm) were used to investigate the efficacy of zooplankton and Artemia nauplii as feed for spawn rearing. Three-day old spawns were stocked in six mini shallow cisterns at a stocking density of 100 individuals/L of water. Two treatments each with three replications were used to develop culture technique of the climbing perch. In case of treatment-1, the spawns were fed with Artemia nauplii three times daily, while in treatment-2, zooplankton were used as feed in the same manner as in treatment-1. After 14 days of rearing, mean final weight of the fry of treatments-1 and 2 were 95.55±6.71 and 57.69±5.40 mg, respectively. In treatment-1, spawn fed with Artemia nauplii showed significantly (P<0.05) higher mean weight than the spawn fed with zooplankton (treatment 2)

    Production of Thai sharpunti (Puntius gonionotus Bleeker) in polyculture with carps using low-cost feed

    The effectiveness of duckweed and rice bran as a low cost supplementary feed was compared through a six months production trial of rajpunti (Barbodes gonionotus) with carps. Six earthen ponds of 360 m² each were used for the trial. Three ponds received duckweed, while the other three received rice bran as supplementary feed. Fish biomass after six months of rearing increased to an average of 2,056 kg/ha in ponds which received duckweed and 2,056 kg/ha in rice bran treated ponds. The net profit with duckweed and rice bran worked out to Tk. 69.752 and Tk. 73.480 kg/ha, respectively. This study revealed that duckweed is a low cost supplementary feed, particularly for farmers with limited income

    A comparative study on the embryonic development of gynogen, triploid, haploid and normal diploid embryos of stinging catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis

    UV irradiation and cold shock were applied on the eggs of stinging catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis, to produce haploid,. gynogen and triploid embryos. A comparative account of the various features· of embryonic development in chromosomally manipulated groups viz. haploid, gynogen and triploid and non-manipulated normal diploid group of H fossilis has been discussed. A slow development and delayed hatching were observed in gynogen and triploid embryos compared to those in normal diploid (control) groups. Mass mortality was observed in all chromosomally manipulated groups particularly during the gastrulation stage. The hatchlings of the gynogen, triploid and normal diploid were similar in overall appearance
