    Previously Claimed(/Unclaimed) X-ray Emission Lines in High Resolution Afterglow Spectra

    We review the significance determination for emission lines in the Chandra HETGS spectrum for GRB020813, and we report on a search for additional lines in high resolution Chandra spectra. No previously unclaimed features are found. We also discuss the significance of lines sets reportedly discovered using XMM data for GRB011211 and GRB030227.     Chandra Observations of the Optically Dark GRB030528

    The X-ray-rich GRB030528 was detected by the HETE satellite and its localization was rapidly disseminated. However, early optical observations failed to detect a counterpart source. In a 2-epoch ToO observation with Chandra, we discovered a fading X-ray source likely counterpart to GRB030528. The source brightness was typical of X-ray afterglows observed at similar epochs. Other observers detected an IR source at a location consistent with the X-ray source.     Optical and X-ray Observations of the Afterglow to XRF030723

    The X-ray-flash XRF030723 was detected by the HETE satellite and rapidly disseminated, allowing for an optical transient to be detected ~1 day after the burst. We discuss observations in the optical with Magellan, which confirmed the fade of the optical transient. In a 2-epoch ToO observation with Chandra, we discovered a fading X-ray source spatially coincident with the optical transient. We present spectral fits to the X-ray data. We also discuss the possibility that the source underwent a rebrightening in the X-rays, as was observed in the optical.     Use of Global Electrochemical Techniques to Characterize Localized Corrosion Behavior on Aluminum Alloys

    Precipitated intermetallic phases strengthen aluminum aircraft alloys; these inclusions also establish localized electrochemical environments, significantly influencing the bulk corrosion behavior of such alloys. To gain insight on the effects of intermetallic phases on the bulk corrosion behavior, two established forms of electrochemical characterization techniques were used, polarization scans and impedance spectroscopy.     Unusual Burst Emission from the New Soft Gamma Repeater SGR1627-41

    In June-July,1998 the Konus-Wind burst spectrometer observed a series of bursts from the new soft gamma repeater SGR1627-41. Time histories and energy spectra of the bursts have been studied, revealing fluences and peak fluxes in the ranges of 3x10^{-7} - 7.5x10^{-6} erg cm^{-2} and 10^{-5} - 10^{-4}erg cm^{-2}/s respectively. One event, 18 June 6153.5sUT stands out dramatically from this series. Its fluence is ~7x10^{-4} erg cm^{-2} and peak flux ~2x10^{-2} erg cm^{-2}/s. These values from a source at a distance of 5.8 kpc yield an energy output of ~3x10^{42}erg and maximum luminosity of ~8x10^{43} erg/s, similar to the values for the famous March 5, 1979 and August27,1998 events. In terms of energy, this event is another giant outburst seen in a third SGR! However, this very energetic burst differs significantly from the other giant outbursts. It exhibits no separate initial pulse with a fast rise time, no extended tail, and no pulsations. It is rather similar to ordinary repeated bursts but is a few hundred times stronger in intensity. According to the magnetar model by Thompson and Duncan (1995) such a burst may be initiated by a strong starquake when a crust fracture propagates over the whole surface of a neutron star.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures.     Simulation of the Relaxation Potential Profile of an ac-dc-ac Test

    The relaxation period of the accelerated ac-dc-ac test for coatings is associated with the transient electrochemistry that occurs when the immersed coated system is allowed to return to a stable open-circuit condition after being subjected to a cathodic potential. A mathematical model of the transient electrochemistry that occurs during this relaxation period is presented for coated aluminum. Expressions for the corrosion potential and corrosion current as functions of the local pH at the metal-coating interface were developed using reported experimental results. These expressions enabled the simulation of the transient electrochemistry under the constraint of balanced anodic and cathodic current densities. Regression of the transient relaxation potential profiles to exponential decay functions provided time-constant characterization of the profiles. Simulated results are presented that demonstrate the influences of the coating\u27s porosity and thickness, the applied dc potential and the metal-coating interface condition on the time-constants associated with the relaxation profile. Interpretation of experimentally reported relaxation potential profiles supported the analysis of the simulated results

    This is a summary paper of MODEST-2, a workshop held at the Astronomical Institute ``Anton Pannekoek'' in Amsterdam, 16-17 December 2002. MODEST is a loose collaboration of people interested in MOdelling DEnse STellar systems, particularly those interested in modelling these systems using all the available physics (stellar dynamics, stellar evolution, hydrodynamics and the interplay between the three) by defining interfaces between different codes. In this paper, we summarize 1) the main advances in this endeavour since MODEST-1; 2) the main science goals which can be and should be addressed by these types of simulations; and 3) the most pressing theoretical and modelling advances that we identified.Comment: Accepted by New Astronom
