Reverse engineering in construction
Recently a great deal of research into construction IT has been completed, and this is ongoing to improve efficiency and quality in the construction sector. The new innovation of 3D laser scanning is aimed at being used to improve the efficiency and quality of construction projects, such as maintenance of buildings or group of buildings that are going to be renovated for new services.
The 3D laser scanner will be integrated with other VR tools such as GIS solutions and workbench for visualisation, analysis and interaction with a building VR model. An integration strategy is proposed for an Ordnance Survey map of the area and 3D model created by means of the laser scanner. The integrated model will then be transferred to the VR workbench in order to visualise, interact and analyse the interested buildings on purpose
A Hessenberg Markov chain for fast fibre delay line length optimization
In this paper we present an approach to compute the invariant vector of the N + 1 state Markov chain P presented in (Rogiest et al., Lecture Notes in Computer Science, NET-COOP 2007 Special Issue, pp. 4465:185-194) to determine the loss rate of an FDL buffer consisting of N lines, by solving a related Hessenberg system (i.e., a Markov chain skip-free in one direction). This system is obtained by inserting additional time instants in the sample paths of P and allows us to compute the loss rate for various FDL lengths by solving a single system. This is shown to be especially effective in reducing the computation time of the heuristic LRA algorithm presented in (Lambert et al., Proc. NAEC 2005, pp. 545-555) to optimize the FDL lengths, where improvements of several orders of magnitude can be realized
Unmasking Obsessive Compulsive Behaviors in Leaders – A Dark Side of Leadership
Individuals in the workplace interact with peer constituents displaying various personality behaviors that influence productive workplace relationships. Sometimes, the darker side of leadership is masked and camouflages disturbing personality behaviors. Leaders are no exception to the array of personalities hindering productive follower relationships. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent, obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. Obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) in leaders manifest themselves in a variety of ways and have the potential to deter satisfactory relationships with followers. Subordinates are subjected to higher instances of employee surveillance, matriculate attention to detail, extraordinary communication and feedback, repetitive reprimands, and fear tactics to motivate desired behavior. Although these practices are within management scope, manifestations of OCD leader tendencies and their effect on followership cannot be ignored. As the level of anxiety in Americans continues to increase, organizations may observe higher instances of OCD-related behaviors in leaders. Towards Large-scale Inconsistency Measurement
We investigate the problem of inconsistency measurement on large knowledge
bases by considering stream-based inconsistency measurement, i.e., we
investigate inconsistency measures that cannot consider a knowledge base as a
whole but process it within a stream. For that, we present, first, a novel
inconsistency measure that is apt to be applied to the streaming case and,
second, stream-based approximations for the new and some existing inconsistency
measures. We conduct an extensive empirical analysis on the behavior of these
inconsistency measures on large knowledge bases, in terms of runtime, accuracy,
and scalability. We conclude that for two of these measures, the approximation
of the new inconsistency measure and an approximation of the contension
inconsistency measure, large-scale inconsistency measurement is feasible.Comment: International Workshop on Reactive Concepts in Knowledge

30 Doradus - a Template for "Real Starbursts"?
30 Doradus is the closest massive star forming region and the best studied
template of a starburst. In this conference paper we first summarize the
properties of 30 Doradus and its stellar core, R136. We discuss the effects of
insufficient spatial resolution and cluster density profiles on dynamical mass
estimates of super star clusters, and show that their masses can be easily
overestimated by a factor of ten or more. From a very simple model, with
R136-like clusters as representative building blocks, we estimate typical
luminosities of the order 10^11 L_o for starburst galaxies.Comment: To be published in "Starbursts: From 30 Doradus to Lyman Break

Hierarchical Models for Independence Structures of Networks
We introduce a new family of network models, called hierarchical network
models, that allow us to represent in an explicit manner the stochastic
dependence among the dyads (random ties) of the network. In particular, each
member of this family can be associated with a graphical model defining
conditional independence clauses among the dyads of the network, called the
dependency graph. Every network model with dyadic independence assumption can
be generalized to construct members of this new family. Using this new
framework, we generalize the Erd\"os-R\'enyi and beta-models to create
hierarchical Erd\"os-R\'enyi and beta-models. We describe various methods for
parameter estimation as well as simulation studies for models with sparse

Submillimeter Array multiline observations of the massive star-forming region IRAS 18089-1732
Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of the high-mass star-forming region
IRAS 18089-1732 in the 1 mm and 850 m band with 1 GHz bandwidth reveal a
wealth of information. We present the observations of 34 lines from 16
different molecular species. Most molecular line maps show significant
contributions from the outflow, and only few molecules are confined to the
inner core. We present and discuss the molecular line observations and outline
the unique capabilities of the SMA for future imaging line surveys at high
