    Sedimentary structure of large sand dunes: examples from Dumont and Eureka dunes, California

    The current research presents ground penetrating radar images up to 30 m in depth of two large desert dunes in California, USA— a barchanoid ridge in the Dumont field and a linear dune in the Eureka expanse. The radar images show a complicated structure of internal layering with ascending cross-strata, cross-bedding and bounding surfaces cutting through layers. Additional research using seismic refraction surveys and sand sampling refine the image of the subsurface (<5 m) structure. The sedimentary structure of the dune shows a strong internal layering with a cemented structure that may immobilize and influence migration of dune expanses. The subsurface features of the sand dune fields in the Mojave Desert provide evidence of dune building, wind regime and precipitation history

    New Caledonian crows learn the functional properties of novel tool types.

    New Caledonian crows were presented with Bird and Emery's (2009a) Aesop's fable paradigm, which requires stones to be dropped into a water-filled tube to bring floating food within reach. The crows did not spontaneously use stones as tools, but quickly learned to do so, and to choose objects and materials with functional properties. Some crows discarded both inefficient and non-functional objects before observing their effects on the water level. Interestingly, the crows did not learn to discriminate between functional and non-functional objects and materials when there was an arbitrary, rather than causal, link between object and reward. This finding suggests that the crows' performances were not based on associative learning alone. That is, learning was not guided solely by the covariation rate between stimuli and outcomes or the conditioned reinforcement properties acquired by functional objects. Our results, therefore, show that New Caledonian crows can process causal information not only when it is linked to sticks and stick-like tools but also when it concerns the functional properties of novel types of tool

    Genome-wide distribution of histone H4 Lysine 16 acetylation sites and their relationship to gene expression

    BACKGROUND: Histone post-translational modifications are critical determinants of chromatin structure and function, impacting multiple biological processes including DNA transcription, replication, and repair. The post-translational acetylation of histone H4 at lysine 16 (H4K16ac) was initially identified in association with dosage compensation of the Drosophila male X chromosome. However, in mammalian cells, H4K16ac is not associated with dosage compensation and the genomic distribution of H4K16ac is not precisely known. Therefore, we have mapped the genome-wide H4K16ac distribution in human cells. RESULTS: We performed H4K16ac chromatin immunoprecipitation from human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells followed by hybridization to whole-genome tiling arrays and identified 25,893 DNA regions (false discovery rate <0.005) with average length of 692 nucleotides. Interestingly, although a majority of H4K16ac sites localized within genes, only a relatively small fraction (~10%) was found near promoters, in contrast to the distribution of the acetyltransferase, MOF, responsible for acetylation at K16 of H4. Using differential gene expression profiling data, 73 genes (> ±1.5-fold) were identified as potential H4K16ac-regulated genes. Seventeen transcription factor-binding sites were significantly associated with H4K16ac occupancy (p < 0.0005). In addition, a consensus 12-nucleotide guanine-rich sequence motif was identified in more than 55% of the H4K16ac peaks. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that H4K16 acetylation has a limited effect on transcription regulation in HEK293 cells, whereas H4K16ac has been demonstrated to have critical roles in regulating transcription in mouse embryonic stem cells. Thus, H4K16ac-dependent transcription regulation is likely a cell type specific process

    Age and connection to nature: when is engagement critical?

    Conservation organisations are increasingly aware of the need to connect people with nature to motivate behaviour. However, to maximise effectiveness from the limited resources available, organisations need to understand variability in connection to nature. This research examines connection to nature of people aged 5 to 75 years, using two popular measures, in a cross-sectional UK sample. The hypothesis was that there would be clear, age-related patterns in connection, with specific breakpoints associated with differences in feelings of connection. Data were collected across a variety of locations. Generalised Additive Models found similar age-related patterns from both measures, with connection declining from childhood to an overall low in the mid-teens; followed by a rise to the early 20s and reaching a plateau to the end of the lifetime. Both measures also showed females generally had higher connection scores than males. Implications for conservation are discussed

    The time course of exogenous and endogenous control of covert attention

    Studies of eye-movements and manual response have established that rapid overt selection is largely exogenously driven toward salient stimuli, whereas slower selection is largely endogenously driven to relevant objects. We use the N2pc, an event-related potential index of covert attention, to demonstrate that this time course reflects an underlying pattern in the deployment of covert attention. We find that shifts of attention that occur soon after the onset of a visual search array are directed toward salient, task-irrelevant visual stimuli and are associated with slow responses to the target. In contrast, slower shifts are target-directed and are associated with fast responses. The time course of exogenous and endogenous control provides a framework in which some inconsistent results in the capture literature might be reconciled; capture may occur when attention is rapidly deployed

    Community science for coastal acidification monitoring and research

Coastal Management, 49(5), (2021): 510-531, https://doi.org/10.1080/08920753.2021.1947131.Ocean and coastal acidification (OCA) present a unique set of sustainability challenges at the human-ecological interface. Extensive biogeochemical monitoring that can assess local acidification conditions, distinguish multiple drivers of changing carbonate chemistry, and ultimately inform local and regional response strategies is necessary for successful adaptation to OCA. However, the sampling frequency and cost-prohibitive scientific equipment needed to monitor OCA are barriers to implementing the widespread monitoring of dynamic coastal conditions. Here, we demonstrate through a case study that existing community-based water monitoring initiatives can help address these challenges and contribute to OCA science. We document how iterative, sequential outreach, workshop-based training, and coordinated monitoring activities through the Northeast Coastal Acidification Network (a) assessed the capacity of northeastern United States community science programs and (b) engaged community science programs productively with OCA monitoring efforts. Our results (along with the companion manuscript) indicate that community science programs are capable of collecting robust scientific information pertinent to OCA and are positioned to monitor in locations that would critically expand the coverage of current OCA research. Furthermore, engaging community stakeholders in OCA science and outreach enabled a platform for dialogue about OCA among other interrelated environmental concerns and fostered a series of co-benefits relating to public participation in resource and risk management.
