A Model of Low-lying States in Strongly Interacting Electroweak Symmetry-Breaking Sector
It is proposed that, in a strongly-interacting electroweak sector, besides
the Goldstone bosons, the coexistence of a scalar state () and vector
resonances such as [)], [] and
[] is required by the proper Regge behavior of the
forward scattering amplitudes. This is a consequence of the following
well-motivated assumptions: (a). Adler-Weisberger-type sum rules and the
superconvergence relations for scattering amplitudes hold in this strongly
interacting sector; (b). the sum rules at are saturated by a minimal set
of low-lying states with appropriate quantum numbers. It therefore suggests
that a complete description should include all these resonances. These states
may lead to distinctive experimental signatures at future colliders.Comment: revised version, to appear in Modern Physics Letters A; file also

Anomalous Light Scattering by Topological -symmetric Particle Arrays
Robust topological edge modes may evolve into complex-frequency modes when a
physical system becomes non-Hermitian. We show that, while having negligible
forward optical extinction cross section, a conjugate pair of such complex
topological edge modes in a non-Hermitian -symmetric system can
give rise to an anomalous sideway scattering when they are simultaneously
excited by a plane wave. We propose a realization of such scattering state in a
linear array of subwavelength resonators coated with gain media. The prediction
is based on an analytical two-band model and verified by rigorous numerical
simulation using multiple-multipole scattering theory. The result suggests an
extreme situation where leakage of classical information is unnoticeable to the
transmitter and the receiver when such a -symmetric unit is
inserted into the communication channel.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure
Radiative and flavor-violating transitions of leptons from interactions with color-octet particles
It has been recently proposed that neutrino mass could originate from Yukawa
interactions of leptons with new colored particles. This raises the interesting
possibility of testing mass generation through copious production of those
particles at hadron colliders. A realistic assessment of it however should take
into account how large those interactions could be from available precision
results. In this work we make a systematic analysis to the flavor structure in
Yukawa couplings, provide a convenient parametrization to it, and investigate
the rare radiative and pure leptonic decays of the muon and tau leptons. For
general values of parameters the muon decays set stringent constraints on the
couplings, and all rare tau decays are far below the current experimental
sensitivity. However, there is room in parameter space in which the muon decays
could be significantly suppressed by destructive interference between colored
particles without generically reducing the couplings themselves. This is also
the region of parameters that is relevant to collider physics. We show that for
this part of parameter space some tau decays can reach or are close to the
current level of precision.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure
Remote sensing and GIS-based analysis of cave development in the Suoimuoi Catchment (Son La - NW Vietnam)
Integration of remotely sensed imagery with ground surveys is a promising method in cave
development studies. In this research a methodology was set up in which a variety of remote
sensing and GIS techniques support cave analysis in the tropical karst area of the Suoimuoi
catchment, NW Vietnam. In order to extract the maximum information from different remotely
sensed data, the hue invariant IHS transformation was applied to integrate Landsat multispectral
channels with the high resolution Landsat 7 ETM panchromatic channel. The resulting
fused image was used, after enhancement, to visually and digitally extract lineaments.
Aerial photos evaluated the extracted lineaments. Based on lineament density indices a fracture
zone favorable for cave development is defined. The distance between caves and faults
was investigated as well as the correspondence between the cave occurrence and the fracture
zone
Rare K decays in a model of quark and lepton masses
An extension of a model of neutrino masses to the quark sector provides an
interesting link between these two sectors. A parameter which is important to
describe neutrino oscillations and masses is found to be a crucial one
appearing in various ``penguin'' operators, in particular the so-called Z
penguin. This parameter is severely constrained by the rare decay process
. This in turn has interesting implications on the
decay rates of other rare processes such as , etc..., as well
as on the masses of the neutrinos and the masses of the vector-like quarks and
leptons which appear in our model.Comment: 34 pages, 10 figures, corrected some typos in the introductio
Learning and detecting activities from movement trajectories using the hierarchical hidden Markov model
Directly modeling the inherent hierarchy and shared structures of human behaviors, we present an application of the hierarchical hidden Markov model (HHMM) for the problem of activity recognition. We argue that to robustly model and recognize complex human activities, it is crucial to exploit both the natural hierarchical decomposition and shared semantics embedded in the movement trajectories. To this end, we propose the use of the HHMM, a rich stochastic model that has been recently extended to handle shared structures, for representing and recognizing a set of complex indoor activities. Furthermore, in the need of real-time recognition, we propose a Rao-Blackwellised particle filter (RBPF) that efficiently computes the filtering distribution at a constant time complexity for each new observation arrival. The main contributions of this paper lie in the application of the shared-structure HHMM, the estimation of the model\u27s parameters at all levels simultaneously, and a construction of an RBPF approximate inference scheme. The experimental results in a real-world environment have confirmed our belief that directly modeling shared structures not only reduces computational cost, but also improves recognition accuracy when compared with the tree HHMM and the flat HMM.<br /
Approximate gauge symmetry of composite vector bosons
It can be shown in a solvable field theory model that the couplings of the
composite vector bosons made of a fermion pair approach the gauge couplings in
the limit of strong binding. Although this phenomenon may appear accidental and
special to the vector boson made of a fermion pair, we extend it to the case of
bosons being constituents and find that the same phenomenon occurs in more an
intriguing way. The functional formalism not only facilitates computation but
also provides us with a better insight into the generating mechanism of
approximate gauge symmetry, in particular, how the strong binding and global
current conservation conspire to generate such an approximate symmetry. Remarks
are made on its possible relevance or irrelevance to electroweak and higher
symmetries.Comment: Correction of typos. The published versio
Factored state-abstract hidden Markov models for activity recognition using pervasive multi-modal sensors
Current probabilistic models for activity recognition do not incorporate much sensory input data due to the problem of state space explosion. In this paper, we propose a model for activity recognition, called the Factored State-Abtract Hidden Markov Model (FS-AHMM) to allow us to integrate many sensors for improving recognition performance. The proposed FS-AHMM is an extension of the Abstract Hidden Markov Model which applies the concept of factored state representations to compactly represent the state transitions. The parameters of the FS-AHMM are estimated using the EM algorithm from the data acquired through multiple multi-modal sensors and cameras. The model is evaluated and compared with other existing models on real-world data. The results show that the proposed model outperforms other models and that the integrated sensor information helps in recognizing activity more accurately
