VLT observations of the magnetar CXO J164710.2-455216 and the detection of a candidate infrared counterpart
We present deep observations of the field of the magnetar CXOJ164710.2-455216
in the star cluster Westerlund 1, obtained in the near-infrared with the
adaptive optics camera NACO@VLT. We detected a possible candidate counterpart
at the {\em Chandra} position of the magnetar, of magnitudes , , and . The K-band measurements available for two epochs (2006 and
2013) do not show significant signs of variability but only a marginal
indication that the flux varied (at the 2 level), consistent with the
fact that the observations were taken when CXOJ164710.2-455216 was in
quiescence. At the same time, we also present colour--magnitude and
colour--colour diagrams in the J, H, and K bands from the 2006 epoch
only, the only one with observations in all three bands, showing that the
candidate counterpart lies in the main bulk of objects describing a relatively
well--defined sequence. Therefore, based on its colours and lack of
variability, we cannot yet associate the candidate counterpart to
CXOJ164710.2-455216. Future near-infrared observations of the field,
following-up a source outburst, would be crucial to confirm the association
from the detection of near-infrared variability and colour evolution.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
High Latitude Radio Emission in a Sample of Edge-On Spiral Galaxies
We have mapped 16 edge-on galaxies at 20 cm using the VLA. For 5 galaxies, we
could form spectral index, energy and magnetic field maps. We find that all but
one galaxy show evidence for non-thermal high latitude radio continuum
emission, suggesting that cosmic ray halos are common in star forming galaxies.
The high latitude emission is seen over a variety of spatial scales and in
discrete and/or smooth features. In general, the discrete features emanate from
the disk, but estimates of CR diffusion lengths suggest that diffusion alone is
insufficient to transport the particles to the high latitudes seen (> 15 kpc in
one case). Thus CRs likely diffuse through low density regions and/or are
assisted by other mechanisms (e.g. winds). We searched for correlations between
the prevalence of high latitude radio emission and a number of other
properties, including the global SFR, supernova input rate per unit star
forming, and do not find clear correlations with any of these properties.Comment: 40 pages of text, 3 figures, 6 tables, and an appendix of 21 jpeg

Assessment of the added value of the Twente Photoacoustic Mammoscope in breast cancer diagnosis\ud
Purpose: Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is a recently developed breast cancer imaging technique. In order to enhance successful clinical implementation, we quantified the potential clinical value of different scenarios incorporating PA imaging by means of multi-criteria analysis. From this analysis, the most promising area of application for PA imaging in breast cancer diagnosis is determined, and recommendations are provided to optimize the design of PA imaging. - \ud
Methods: The added value of PA imaging was assessed in two areas of application in the diagnostic track. These areas include PA imaging as an alternative to x-ray mammography and ultrasonography in early stage diagnosis, and PA imaging as an alternative to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in later stage diagnosis. The added value of PA imaging was assessed with respect to four main criteria (costs, diagnostic performance, patient comfort and risks). An expert panel composed of medical, technical and management experts was asked to assess the relative importance of the criteria in comparing the alternative diagnostic devices. The judgments of the experts were quantified based on the validated pairwise comparison technique of the Analytic Hierarchy Process, a technique for multi-criteria analysis. Sensitivity analysis was applied to account for the uncertainty of the outcomes. - \ud
Results: Among the considered alternatives, PA imaging is the preferred technique due to its non-invasiveness, low cost and low risks. However, the experts do not expect large differences in diagnostic performance. The outcomes suggest that design changes to improve the diagnostic performance of PA imaging should focus on the quality of the reconstruction algorithm, detector sensitivity, detector bandwidth and the number of wavelengths used. - \ud
Conclusion: The AHP method was useful in recommending the most promising area of application in the diagnostic track for which PA imaging can be implemented, this being early diagnosis, as a substitute for the combined use of x-ray mammography and ultrasonography
Unveiling the near-infrared structure of the massive-young stellar object NGC 3603 IRS 9A with sparse aperture masking and spectroastrometry
Contemporary theory holds that massive stars gather mass during their initial
phases via accreting disk-like structures. However, conclusive evidence for
disks has remained elusive for the most massive young objects. This is mainly
due to significant observational challenges. Incisive studies, even targeting
individual objects, are therefore relevant to the progression of the field. NGC
3603 IRS 9A* is a young massive stellar object still surrounded by an envelope
of molecular gas. Previous mid-infrared observations with long-baseline
interferometry provided evidence for a disk of 50 mas diameter at its core.
This work aims at a comprehensive study of the physics and morphology of IRS 9A
at near-infrared wavelengths. New sparse aperture masking interferometry data
taken with NACO/VLT at Ks and Lp filters were obtained and analysed together
with archival CRIRES spectra of the H2 and BrG lines. The calibrated
visibilities recorded at Ks and Lp bands suggest the presence of a partially
resolved compact object of 30 mas at the core of IRS 9A, together with the
presence of over-resolved flux. The spectroastrometric signal of the H2 line
shows that this spectral feature proceeds from the large scale extended
emission (300 mas) of IRS 9A, while the BrG line appears to be formed at the
core of the object (20 mas). This scenario is consistent with the brightness
distribution of the source for near- and mid-infrared wavelengths at various
spatial scales. However, our model suffers from remaining inconsistencies
between SED modelling and the interferometric data. Moreover, the BrG
spectroastrometric signal indicates that the core of IRS 9A exhibits some form
of complexity such as asymmetries in the disk. Future high-resolution
observations are required to confirm the disk/envelope model and to flesh out

Instant Two-Body Equation in Breit Frame
A quasipotential formalism for elastic scattering from relativistic bound
states is based on applying an instant constraint to both initial and final
states in the Breit frame. This formalism is advantageous for the analysis of
electromagnetic interactions because current conservation and four momentum
conservation are realized within a three-dimensional formalism. Wave functions
are required in a frame where the total momentum is nonzero, which means that
the usual partial wave analysis is inapplicable. In this work, the
three-dimensional equation is solved numerically, taking into account the
relevant symmetries. A dynamical boost of the interaction also is needed for
the instant formalism, which in general requires that the boosted interaction
be defined as the solution of a four-dimensional equation. For the case of a
scalar separable interaction, this equation is solved and the Lorentz
invariance of the three-dimensional formulation using the boosted interaction
is verified. For more realistic interactions, a simple approximation is used to

The Nature of Composite LINER/HII Galaxies, As Revealed from High-Resolution VLA Observations
A sample of 37 nearby galaxies displaying composite LINER/HII and pure HII
spectra was observed with the VLA in an investigation of the nature of their
weak radio emission. The resulting radio contour maps overlaid on optical
galaxy images are presented here, together with an extensive literature list
and discussion of the individual galaxies. Radio morphological data permit
assessment of the ``classical AGN'' contribution to the global activity
observed in these ``transition'' LINER galaxies. One in five of the latter
objects display clear AGN characteristics: these occur exclusively in

Cicrumnuclear Supernova Remnants and HII Regions in NGC 253
Archival VLA data has been used to produce arcsecond-resolution 6- and 20-cm
images of the region surrounding the nuclear 200-pc (~15") starburst in NGC
253. Twenty-two discrete sources stronger than 0.4 mJy have been detected
within ~2 kpc (~3') of the galaxy nucleus; almost all these sources must be
associated with the galaxy. None of the radio sources coincides with a detected
X-ray binary, so they appear to be due to supernova remnants and H II regions.
The region outside the central starburst has a derived radio supernova rate of
<~0.1/yr, and may account for at least 20% of the recent star formation in NGC
253. Most of the newly identified sources have steep, nonthermal radio spectra,
but several relatively strong thermal sources also exist, containing the
equivalent of tens of O5 stars. These stars are spread over tens of parsecs,
and are embedded in regions having average ionized gas densities of
20-200/cm^3, much lower than in the most active nuclear star-forming regions in
NGC 253 or in the super star clusters seen in other galaxies. The strongest
region of thermal emission coincides with a highly reddened area seen at
near-infrared wavelengths, possibly containing optically obscured H II regions.Comment: 17 pages, 3 postscript figures, AASTeX format, in press for

Estimating Be Star Disk Radii using H-alpha Emission Equivalent Widths
We present numerical models of the circumstellar disks of Be stars, and we
describe the resulting synthetic H-alpha emission lines and maps of the
wavelength-integrated emission flux projected onto the sky. We demonstrate that
there are monotonic relationships between the emission line equivalent width
and the ratio of the angular half-width at half maximum of the projected disk
major axis to the radius of the star. These relationships depend mainly upon
the temperatures of the disk and star, the inclination of the disk normal to
the line of sight, and the adopted outer boundary for the disk radius. We show
that the predicted H-alpha disk radii are consistent with those observed
directly through long baseline interferometry of nearby Be stars (especially
once allowance is made for disk truncation in binaries and for dilution of the
observed H-alpha equivalent width by continuum disk flux in the V-band).Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, ApJL in pres
The Origin of the Dust Arch in the Halo of NGC 4631: An Expanding Superbubble?
We study the nature and the origin of the dust arch in the halo of the
edge-on galaxy NGC 4631 detected by Neininger & Dumke (1999). We present CO
observations made using the new On-The-Fly mapping mode with the FCRAO 14m
telescope, and find no evidence for CO emission associated with the dust arch.
Our examination of previously published HI data shows that if previous
assumptions about the dust temperature and gas/dust ratio are correct, then
there must be molecular gas associated with the arch, below our detection
threshold. If this is true, then the molecular mass associated with the dust
arch is between 1.5 x 10^8 M(sun)and 9.7 x 10^8 M(sun), and likely towards the
low end of the range. A consequence of this is that the maximum allowed value
for the CO-to-H_2 conversion factor is 6.5 times the Galactic value, but most
likely closer to the Galactic value. The kinematics of the HI apparently
associated with the dust arch reveal that the gas here is not part of an
expanding shell or outflow, but is instead two separate features (a tidal arm
and a plume of HI sticking out into the halo) which are seen projected together
and appear as a shell. Thus there is no connection between the dust "arch" and
the hot X-ray emitting gas that appears to surround the galaxy Wang et al.

Detached-Eddy Simulation of the Vortical Flowfield about the VFE-2 DeltaWing
The numerical simulation of the flow around a 65° delta wing configuration with rounded leading edges is presented. For the numerical simulation the Cobalt Code uses a cell-centered unstructured hybrid mesh approach. Several numerical results are presented for the steady RANS equations as well as for DES and DDES hybrid approaches. The simulations are done as part of the NATO RTO/AVT 113 working group focusing on experimental and numerical research on delta wing configurations with rounded leading edges. Within this paper the focus is related to the dual primary vortex flow topology, especially the sensitivity of the flow to angle of attack and Reynolds number effects. Reasonable results are obtained with both steady RANS and SA-DDES simulations. The results are compared and verified by experimental data, including surface pressure and pressure sensitive paint results. The impact of transition is assessed, and recommendations for improving future simulations are made
