University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2017This paper discusses some of the many facets of percussion music through the examination and analysis of the following works: Gary Burton's Chega De Saudade for solo vibraphone; Steve Reich's Marimba Phase for two marimbas; Michael Gordon's XY for five drums; the author's own arrangement for multiple-percussion setup of John Cage's In a Landscape; Minoru Miki's Time for Marimba for solo marimba; and Milton Babbitt's Homily for solo snare drum. As the repertoire and performance practices of percussion continue to develop, there are many issues of note to the studying percussionist. These range from technical concerns, to issues of interpretation. Each work exemplifies certain of these issues, and this paper seeks to glean better understanding of those through analysis and study of the works

Exploring Fine Subpixel Spatial Resolution of Hybrid CMOS Detectors

When an X-ray is incident onto the silicon absorber array of a detector, it liberates a large number of electrons, which tend to diffuse outward into what is referred to as the charge cloud. This number can vary from tens to thousands across the soft X-ray bandpass (0.1 - 10 keV). The charge cloud can then be picked up by several pixels, and forms a specific pattern based on the exact incident location of the X-ray. We present experimental results on subpixel resolution for a custom H2RG with 36 micron pixels, presented in Bray 2018, and compare the data to simulated images . We then apply the model simulation to a prototype small pixel hybrid CMOS detector (HCD) that would be suitable for the Lynx X-ray surveyor. We also discuss the ability of a small pixel detector to obtain subpixel resolution

The Second Industrial Revolution and the Staples Frontier in Canada: Rethinking Knowledge And History

Dans les termes de la théorie du produit générateur de Innis, cette transformation peut être vue comme le résultat de l’exploitation de ressources naturelles frontalières utilisant la technologie d’un centre Euro-Américain plus avancé. La chronologie et les caractéristiques des modifications des technologies de traitement du bois sont comparables bien qu’assez différentes de celles qui ont affecté les technologies des moulins à papier.In the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century the exploitation of Canada's softwood forests was transformed by the new technologies of the second Industrial Revolution. This can be understood in terms of Innis's staple thesis as the exploitation of natural resources on a margin for and using the technology of a more advanced Euro-American centre. The sociology of knowledge also provides a framework for analysis as old and new bodies of technical knowledge were possessed by and altered the relationships among different social groups. Changes were experienced both in the woods (pulpwood logging) and in the mills (pulp and paper making) in ways which were broadly similar but different in timing and other significant respects
