    Characterization of a Quantum Light Source Based on Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

    We have built a quantum light source capable of producing different types of quantum states. The quantum light source is based on entangled state preparation in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The single-photon detection rate of eight-hundred thousand per second demonstrates that we have created a bright state-of-the-art quantum light source. As a part of the characterization we measured two-photon quantum interference in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer.Comment: 33 page

(1) after a study in which hemoglobin from a number of individual infants was used. We have now examined in part the fetal hemoglobin components of 17 additional infants and have observed that position 136 of the γ chain may be occupied not only by a glycyl residue, as previously reported, but also by an alanyl residue

    Interference of bovine hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier-201 (Hemopure) on four hematology analyzers

    Introduction: Hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers, for example HBOC-201 (Hemopure), are aimed to bridge acute anemia when blood transfusion is not available or refused by the patient. However, since HBOC-201 appears free in plasma, it interferes with laboratory tests. This study presents an overview of HBOC-201 interference on four commonly used hematology analyzers and suggests treatment monitoring possibilities. Methods: Blood samples were spiked with therapeutic doses of HBOC-201 and nine hematology parameters were measured with the Sysmex XN-20, Siemens Advia 2120i, Abbott Alinity Hq and Abbot Cell Dyn Sapphire hematology analyzers. The results were compared to control samples and the bias was determined. Results: Most parameters, including all cell counts, hematocrit and MCV, showed a non-significant bias compared to control. However, the standard, total hemoglobin (Hb) measurement as well as MCH and MCHC showed poor agreement with control, as HBOC-201 was included in this measurement. Yet, the flow cytometry-based Hb method quantified intracellular Hb in spiked samples, excluding HBOC-201. Conclusion: Of all included hematology parameters, only total Hb and the associated MCH and MCHC suffered from interference. In contrast, the flow cytometry-based Hb measurement provided an accurate measure of intracellular Hb. The difference between total Hb and cellular Hb represents the HBOC-201 concentration and can be used to monitor HBOC-201 treatment.</p

    Yields of oxidized volatile organic compounds during the OH radical initiated oxidation of isoprene, methyl vinyl ketone, and methacrolein under high-NO_x conditions

    We present first-generation and total production yields of glyoxal, methylglyoxal, glycolaldehyde, and hydroxyacetone from the oxidation of isoprene, methyl vinyl ketone (MVK), and methacrolein (MACR) with OH under high NO_x conditions. Several of these first-generation yields are not included in commonly used chemical mechanisms, such as the Leeds Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) v. 3.2. The first-generation yield of glyoxal from isoprene was determined to be 2.1 (±0.6)%. Inclusion of first-generation production of glyoxal, glycolaldehyde and hydroxyacetone from isoprene greatly improves performance of an MCM based model during the initial part of the experiments. In order to further improve performance of the MCM based model, higher generation glyoxal production was reduced by lowering the first-generation yield of glyoxal from C5 hydroxycarbonyls. The results suggest that glyoxal production from reaction of OH with isoprene under high NO_x conditions can be approximated by inclusion of a first-generation production term together with secondary production only via glycolaldehyde. Analogously, methylglyoxal production can be approximated by a first-generation production term from isoprene, and secondary production via MVK, MACR and hydroxyacetone. The first-generation yields reported here correspond to less than 5% of the total oxidized yield from isoprene and thus only have a small effect on the fate of isoprene. However, due to the abundance of isoprene, the combination of first-generation yields and reduced higher generation production of glyoxal from C5 hydroxycarbonyls is important for models that include the production of the small organic molecules from isoprene

    This paper describes a method for solving the cyclic crew rostering problem (CCRP). This is the problem of cyclically ordering a set of duties for a number of crew members, such that several complex constraints are satisfied and such that the quality of the obtained roster is as high as possible. The described method was tested on a number of instances of NS, the largest operator of passenger trains in the Netherlands. These instances involve the generation of rosters for groups of train drivers or conductors of NS. The tests show that high quality solutions for practical instances of the CCRP can be generated in an acceptable amount of computing time. Finally, we describe an experiment where we constructed rosters in an automatic way for a group of conductors. They preferred our—generated—rosters over their own manually constructed rosters

    Controlling the quality factor of a tuning-fork resonance between 9 K and 300 K for scanning-probe microscopy

    We study the dynamic response of a mechanical quartz tuning fork in the temperature range from 9 K to 300 K. Since the quality factor Q of the resonance strongly depends on temperature, we implement a procedure to control the quality factor of the resonance. We show that we are able to dynamically change the quality factor and keep it constant over the whole temperature range. This procedure is suitable for applications in scanning probe microscopy.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

    Inhibited spontaneous emission of quantum dots observed in a 3D photonic band gap

    We present time-resolved emission experiments of semiconductor quantum dots in silicon 3D inverse-woodpile photonic band gap crystals. A systematic study is made of crystals with a range of pore radii to tune the band gap relative to the emission frequency. The decay rates averaged over all dipole orientations are inhibited by a factor of 10 in the photonic band gap and enhanced up to 2? outside the gap, in agreement with theory. We discuss the effects of spatial inhomogeneity, nonradiative decay, and transition dipole orientations on the observed inhibition in the band gap.Comment: 5 figures, update author lis

    Let Ψ\Psi be the projectivization (i.e., the set of one-dimensional vector subspaces) of a vector space of dimension 3\ge 3 over a field. Let HH be a closed (in the pointwise convergence topology) subgroup of the permutation group SΨ\mathfrak{S}_{\Psi} of the set Ψ\Psi. Suppose that HH contains the projective group and an arbitrary self-bijection of Ψ\Psi transforming a triple of collinear points to a non-collinear triple. It is well-known from \cite{KantorMcDonough} that if Ψ\Psi is finite then HH contains the alternating subgroup AΨ\mathfrak{A}_{\Psi} of SΨ\mathfrak{S}_{\Psi}. We show in Theorem \ref{density} below that H=SΨH=\mathfrak{S}_{\Psi}, if Ψ\Psi is infinite.Comment: 9 page
