The sustained influence of prior experience induced by social observation on placebo and nocebo responses

    Get PDF
Background: Social observation is one of the main ways to gain experience. Similar to first-person experience, observational experience affects the effectiveness of subsequent treatments. Yet, it is still undetermined whether the influence of social observation on placebo and nocebo effects to subsequent treatments remains even if related experience occurred a few days ago.</p

Coagulation Behavior of Aluminum Salts in Eutrophic Water:  Significance of Al13Species and pH Control

    Get PDF
The coagulation behavior of aluminum salts in a eutrophic source water was investigated from the viewpoint of Al(III) hydrolysis species transformation. Particular emphasis was paid to the coagulation effect of Al-13 species on removing particles and organic matter. The coagulation behavior of Al coagulants with different basicities was examined through jar tests and hydrolyzed Al(III) speciation distribution characterization in the coagulation process. The results showed that the coagulation efficiency of Al coagulants positively correlated with the content of Al-13 in the coagulation process rather than in the initial coagulants. Aluminum chloride (AlCl3) was more effective than polyaluminum chloride (PACT) in removing turbidity and dissolved organic matter in eutrophic water because AlCl3 could not only generate Al-13 species but also function as a pH control agent in the coagulation process. The solid-state Al-27 NMR spectra revealed that the precipitates formed from AlCl3 and PACT were significantly different and proved that the preformed Al-13 polymer was more stable than the in situ formed one during the coagulation process. Through regulating Al speciation, pH control could improve the coagulation process especially in DOC removal, and AlCl3 benefited most from pH control

Fisheries provide high-quality protein for many people, and their sustainable use is of global concern. Light trapping is a widely used fishing method that takes advantage of the phototropism of fish. Remote sensing technology allows for the monitoring of lit fishing vessels at sea from the air at night, which supports the sustainable management of fisheries. To investigate the potential of different nighttime light remote sensing data for lit fishing vessel identification and applications, we used the fuzzy evaluation method to quantitatively assess images in terms of their radiometric and geometric quality, and Otsu’s method to compare the effects of lit fishing vessel identification. Three kinds of nighttime lighting data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS), Visible infrared imaging radiometer suite day/night band (VIIRS/DNB), and Luojia1-01(LJ1-01) were analyzed, compared, and application pointers were constructed. The results are as follows. ①In the image radiation quality evaluation, the information entropy, clarity, and noise performance of the LJ1-01 image are higher than those of the DMSP/OLS and VIIRS/DNB images, where the information entropy value of the LJ1-01 image is nearly 10 times that of VIIRS/DNB and 23 times that of DMSP/OLS. The average gradient value is 14 times that of the image from VIIRS/DNB and 1,600 times that of DMSP/OLS, while its noise is only about 2/3 of the VIIRS/DNB image and 1/3 of the DMSP/OLS image. In the geometric quality assessment, the geometric positioning accuracy and ground sampling accuracy of the VIIRS/DNB image is the best among the three images, with a relative difference percentage of 100.1%, and the LJ1-01 and DMSP/OLS images are relatively lower, at 96.9% and 92.3%, respectively. ② The detection of squid fishing vessels in the Northwest Pacific is taken as an example to compare the identification effects of three types of data: DMSP/OLS, VIIRS/DNB, and LJ1-01. Among these data, DMSP/OLS can effectively identify the position of the lit fishing boat, and VIIRS/DNB images can accurately estimate the spatial position and number of lit fishing boats with large distances. However, in the case of fishing boats gathering or clustering, the number of fishing vessels could not be identified. This led to the detected number of lit fishing vessels being less than the real value. For the VIIRS/DNB and LJ1-01 images with a 5′×8′ span in the same spatiotemporal range using the same batch of pelagic squid fishing vessels, LJ1-01 extracted 18 fishing vessels. VIIRS/DNB extracted 15, indicating that LJ1-01 can distinguish multiple fishing vessels in the lighted overlapping area, thus accurately identifying the number of fishing vessels. The application pointing table generated based on the results of the three data analyses can provide a reference for sensor/image selection for nighttime light remote sensing fishery applications and a basis for more refined fishing vessel identification, extraction, and monitoring

Case report: Braid-like right coronary artery with chest pain

    Get PDF
Braid-like coronary artery is very rare. It is featured by the division of the coronary artery into multiple tortuous small channels that later converge into a normal lumen at any segment of the coronary artery. We presented a case of a 27-year-old male patient with occasional chest pain. In coronary CT angiography (CCTA) and coronary angiography, a braid-like appearance was found in the right coronary artery. After multidisciplinary discussion, it was speculated to be a woven coronary artery (WCA). We conducted a literature review about woven coronary arteries

De Novo Assembly and Characterization of Bud, Leaf and Flowers Transcriptome from Juglans Regia L. for the Identification and Characterization of New EST-SSRs

    Get PDF
Persian walnut (Juglans regia L.), valued for both its nut and wood, is an ecologically important temperate tree species native to the mountainous regions of central Asia. Despite its importance, there are still few transcriptomic resources in public databases for J. regia, limiting gene discovery and breeding. Here, more than 49.9 million sequencing reads were generated using Illumina sequencing technology in the characterization of the transcriptome of four J. regia organs (bud, leaf, female flowers, and male flowers). De novo assembly yielded 117,229 unigenes with an N50 of 1955 bp. Based on sequence similarity searches against known proteins, a total of 20,413 (17.41%) genes were identified and annotated. A set of 27,584 unigenes with SSR (simple sequence repeats) motifs were identified as potential molecular markers, and a sample of 77 of these EST-SSRs (express sequence tags) were further evaluated to validate their amplification and assess their polymorphism. Next, we developed 39 polymorphic microsatellite markers to screen 88 Persian walnut individuals collected from 11 populations. These markers and transcriptomic resources will be useful for future studies of population genetic structure, evolutionary ecology, and breeding of Persian walnut and other Juglans species

Ten-year changes in the prevalence of overweight, obesity and central obesity among the Chinese adults in urban Shanghai, 1998–2007 — comparison of two cross-sectional surveys

BACKGROUND: In China, obesity is expected to increase rapidly in both urban and rural areas. However, there have been no comprehensive reports on secular trends in obesity prevalence among Chinese adults in urban Shanghai, which is the largest city in southern China. METHODS: In 1998–2001 and again in 2007–2008, two independent population-based cross-sectional surveys were conducted in Shanghai to investigate the prevalence of metabolic disorders. These surveys obtained height, waist circumference (WC), and weight measurements for Chinese adults aged between 20 and 74 years who lived in urban communities. From the 1998–2001 survey, 4,894 participants (2,081 men and 2,813 women, mean age: 48.9 years) were recruited, and 4,395 participants (1,599 men and 2,796 women, mean age: 49.8 years) were recruited from the 2007–2008 survey. Using the World Health Organization criteria, overweight was defined as 25 kg/m(2) ≤ BMI < 30 kg/m(2) and obesity as BMI ≥ 30 kg/m(2). Central obesity was defined as WC ≥ 90 cm in men or ≥85 cm in women. The differences in prevalence of obesity, central obesity and overweight between the two surveys were tested using multivariable logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: Compared to the 1998–2001 survey, in the 2007–2008 survey the BMI distribution for men and the WC distribution for both genders is shifted significantly to the right along the x-axis (all p < 0.001). Over the ten years, the prevalence of combined overweight and obesity increased 24% (from 31.5% to 39.1%, p < 0.001) in men, but decreased 8% (from 27.3% to 25.0%; p < 0.01) in women. The prevalence of central obesity increased 40% in men (from 19.5% to 27.3%; p < 0.01), but the increase was not significant in women (15.0% to 17.1%; p = 0.051). In the total population, only central obesity showed a significant change between the populations in the two surveys, increasing 29% (from 17.3% to 22.4%; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Over this 10 year period, central obesity increased significantly in the Shanghai adult population. However, the prevalence of combined overweight and obesity was significantly increased in men but not in women
