Worst case tractability of L2L_2-approximation for weighted Korobov spaces

We study L2L_2-approximation problems APPd\text{APP}_d in the worst case setting in the weighted Korobov spaces H_{d,\a,{\bm \ga}} with parameter sequences {\bm \ga}=\{\ga_j\} and \a=\{\az_j\} of positive real numbers 1\ge \ga_1\ge \ga_2\ge \cdots\ge 0 and \frac1 2<\az_1\le \az_2\le \cdots. We consider the minimal worst case error e(n,APPd)e(n,\text{APP}_d) of algorithms that use nn arbitrary continuous linear functionals with dd variables. We study polynomial convergence of the minimal worst case error, which means that e(n,APPd)e(n,\text{APP}_d) converges to zero polynomially fast with increasing nn. We recall the notions of polynomial, strongly polynomial, weak and (t1,t2)(t_1,t_2)-weak tractability. In particular, polynomial tractability means that we need a polynomial number of arbitrary continuous linear functionals in dd and \va^{-1} with the accuracy \va of the approximation. We obtain that the matching necessary and sufficient condition on the sequences {\bm \ga} and \a for strongly polynomial tractability or polynomial tractability is \dz:=\liminf_{j\to\infty}\frac{\ln \ga_j^{-1}}{\ln j}>0, and the exponent of strongly polynomial tractability is p^{\text{str}}=2\max\big\{\frac 1 \dz, \frac 1 {2\az_1}\big\}.$

Anisotropic Magnetotransport and Exotic Longitudinal Linear Magnetoresistance in WTe2 Crystals

WTe2 semimetal, as a typical layered transition-metal dichalcogenide, has recently attracted much attention due to the extremely large, non-saturating parabolic magnetoresistance in perpendicular field. Here, we report a systematic study of the angular dependence of the magnetoresistance in WTe2 single crystal. The violation of the Kohler rule and a significant anisotropic magnetotransport behavior in different magnetic field directions are observed. Surprisingly, when the applied field is parallel to the tungsten chains of WTe2, an exotic large longitudinal linear magnetoresistance as high as 1200% at 15 T and 2 K is identified. Violation of the Kohler rule in transverse magnetoresistance can be understood based on a dual effect of the excitons formation and thermal activation, while large longitudinal linear magnetoresistance reflects perfectly the scattering and nesting of quasi-1D nature of this balanced hole-electron system. Our work will stimulate studies of such double-carrier correlated material and corresponding quantum physics

A Protective Role by Interleukin-17F in Colon Tumorigenesis

Interleukin-17F (IL-17F), produced by Th17 cells and other immune cells, is a member of IL-17 cytokine family with highest homology to IL-17A. IL-17F has been shown to have multiple functions in inflammatory responses. While IL-17A plays important roles in cancer development, the function of IL-17F in tumorigenesis has not yet been elucidated. In the current study, we found that IL-17F is expressed in normal human colonic epithelial cells, but this expression is greatly decreased in colon cancer tissues. To examine the roles of IL-17F in colon cancer, we have used IL-17F over-expressing colon cancer cell lines and IL-17F-deficient mice. Our data showed decreased tumor growth of IL-17F-transfected HCT116 cells comparing to mock transfectants when transplanted in nude mice. Conversely, there were increased colonic tumor numbers and tumor areas in Il-17f−/− mice than those from wild-type controls after colon cancer induction. These results indicate that IL-17F plays an inhibitory role in colon tumorigenesis in vivo. In IL-17F over-expressing tumors, there was no significant change in leukocyte infiltration; instead, we found decreased VEGF levels and CD31+ cells. While the VEGF levels were increased in the colon tissues of Il-17f−/− mice with colon cancer. Together, our findings demonstrate a protective role for IL-17F in colon cancer development, possibly via inhibiting tumor angiogenesis

Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data
