    The title compound, C20H16N2O4S, was prepared by introduction of a 2-nitro­benzyl group to 2-(furan-2-yl)-2,3-dihydro-1,5-benzothia­zepin-4(5H)-one via an alkaline-catalysed reaction. The thia­zepine ring adopts a twist-boat conformation. The furan ring is oriented at dihedral angles of 56.75 (14) and 10.82 (14)° with respect to the two benzene rings, while the two benzene rings make a dihedral angle of 62.96 (10)°. Weak inter­molecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds occur in the crystal structure

    Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns among Escherichia coli urinary isolates from community-onset health care-associated urinary tract infection

    Urinary tract infection (UTI) is traditionally classified as community-acquired (CA) and hospital-acquired (HA). Community-onset health care-associated (HCA) infection is a new category that has gained increasing attention. The study aimed to compare the disk susceptibility of nonrepetitive Escherichia coli urinary isolates from HCA-UTI (n = 100) with that of E. coli isolates from CA-UTI (n = 85) and HA-UTI (n = 106). We found that the susceptibility pattern of HCA-UTI E. coli isolates was similar to that of HA-UTI E. coli isolates, but significantly different from that of CA-UTI E. coli isolates. In particular, the proportion of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing isolates was significantly higher in HCA-UTI than that in CA-UTI (30.0% vs. 3.5%, p < 0.001). We recommend that when treating HCA-UTI, it is necessary to take urine cultures for susceptibility testing to guide definite antibiotic therapy

    Clinicopathologic Evaluation of Prognostic Factors for Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Buccal Mucosa

    BackgroundThe purpose of this research was to evaluate the prognostic significance of clinicopathologic variables on the survival rate for squamous cell carcinoma of the buccal mucosa (BMSCC). We analyzed the outcomes of surgical therapy for this aggressive cancer and compared these results with those in the literature.MethodsWe reviewed the medical charts of 172 patients treated in our institution between 1990 and 2005. There were 22 patients excluded from our studies: 20 patients with advanced tumors who received no treatment or palliative treatment, and 2 patients who had received preoperative radiotherapy (RT). The remaining 150 patients were treated with surgeries and among them, 56 patients had undergone postoperative RT. The influence of clinicopathologic factors on the survival rate was analyzed with the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test. Multivariate analysis was assessed with Cox's regression model.ResultsThere were 148 males and 2 females, with a mean age of 53.5 years. The prevalence rate of habitual betel quid chewing documented in charts among 113 patients was 75%. The 5-year overall survival rate and disease-specific survival rate for all patients were 64% and 69%, respectively. For patients with stages I, II, III, and IV disease, the 5-year disease-specific survival rates were 90%, 77%, 52%, and 47%, respectively (p< 0.001). According to the multivariate analysis, the pathologic staging and histologic grading of the tumor were independently the important prognostic factors affecting survival rate. There were 80 patients who developed locoregional recurrence in lymph nodes in the follow-up diagnoses. Distant metastases occurred in 14 patients, with 11 of them also having locoregional recurrence. The distant metastases were found in the lungs (8/14), T-spine (3/14), liver (2/14) and brain (1/14).ConclusionPathologic stage and histologic grade are the most important prognostic factors

    Bryophyte diversity is related to vascular plant diversity and microhabitat under disturbance in karst caves

    Plant diversity, habitat properties, and their relationships in karst caves remain poorly understood. We surveyed vascular plant and bryophyte diversities and measured the habitat characteristics in six karst caves in south China with different disturbance histories (one had been disturbed by poultry feeding, three had been disturbed by tourism, and two were undisturbed). The plant diversity differences among the six caves were analyzed using cluster analysis, and the relationships of plant diversity and microhabitat were assessed using canonical correspondence analysis. We found a total of 43 angiosperm species from 27 families, 20 lycophyte and fern species from 9 families, and 20 species of bryophytes from 13 families in the six caves. Habitat characteristics including light intensity, air relative humidity, air temperature, and soil properties varied among the caves. The plant diversity in karst caves was not rich, but the species composition was unique. The caves with high disturbance had the lowest species richness, numbers of individuals, and Shannon-Wiener diversity indices but the highest Simpson’s dominance indices. The caves with less disturbance had the highest numbers of species, numbers of individuals, and Shannon-Wiener diversity indices but the lowest Simpson’s dominance indices. The disturbed caves were often dominated by drought-tolerant, tenacious mosses (bryophytes), while the relatively undisturbed caves contained abundant liverworts (bryophytes), which were better adapted to humid environments. Plant diversity in karst caves was closely related to habitat heterogeneity, light and water status, and nutrient availability. Tourism and poultry farming were associated with the degradation of vegetation in some karst caves. Protecting and restoring bryophytes might facilitate the settlement, growth, and succession of vascular plants in karst caves. Bryophytes can be used as indicators of overall plant diversity and restoration status in karst caves
