Conservation laws and angular transverse shifts of the reflected and transmitted light beams

The relation between the angular transverse shifts of the beams reflected and transmitted at a plane interface of two isotropic transparent media is established. The derivation of this relation is based on the conservation law of the transverse component of the Minkowski linear momentum, which takes place in the processes of the reflection and transmission of wave packets.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

Onset and saturation of ion heating by odd-parity rotating-magnetic-fields in a field-reversed configuration

Heating of figure-8 ions by odd-parity rotating magnetic fields (RMFoRMF_o) applied to an elongated field-reversed configuration (FRC) is investigated. The largest energy gain occurs at resonances (s≡ωR/ωs \equiv \omega_R/ \omega) of the RMFoRMF_o frequency, ωR\omega_R, with the figure-8 orbital frequency, ω\omega, and is proportional to s2s^2 for s−evens-even resonances and to ss for s−odds-odd resonances. The threshold for the transition from regular to stochastic orbits explains both the onset and saturation of heating. The FRC magnetic geometry lowers the threshold for heating below that in the tokamak by an order of magnitude.Comment: 4 page, 3 figure
